I have had a paranoia attack and the outcome can never be good in such a situation can it?

Get a load of this......

That is one hell of a load of pain.

28th July 1941
Turn 10
Northern Front

A look at the last turn shows Ostrov has fallen and lead elements of AGN are pushing on toward Tallinn.

Between Tallinn and Narva, 48th Army just cannot move quick enough. This is so frustrating.

31st Army continue to hold fast on their line southeast of Lake Ilmen.

Finally the eastern most units of 27th Army have to abandon their dug-in position to avoid being surrounded. The four remaining divisions are now caught in a pocket two hexes big and are almost surrounded by 16th Army.

Nothing happening at the moment in Finland, but I must expect the Finns to be on the march soon when AGN advance far enough (I assume that is how it works).

Turn 10
Central Front

20th Army at last get an attack in against the infantry of 4th Panzergruppe, and force the German division to retreat. The Soviets agonisingly get to within one hex of cutting the German supply line but in so doing the Soviet tank divisions have crossed the front border and are no doubt dead meat next turn. Still, I hope it will give the Germans something to think about.

Further south, 24th Army are all out of AP and cannot continue to apply pressure against 9th Army.

In the marshes, 29th Army are completely surrounded and 28th Army have had to fall back on Gomel thanks to the presence of a Hungarian unit - no doubt the advance guard of more armour....

Turn 10
Southern Front

There is little left to move here.

33rd Army are in position to protect the entrance to the Crimea. Trouble is - without reinforcements soon the Germans can simply by-pass it and head directly east....

The only brief bright spot (I hope) is the sacrificing of two tank divisions in order to try and interrupt supply to units of 1st Panzergruppe. I suspect it won't do any good but anything is worth a try if it delays the German advance in any way.

1st August 1941
Turn 11

A look at the last turn makes for some grim reading. The Baltic Military District almost ceases to exist as 18th Army slices into the surviving units. The tank divisions that tried to delay Kleist's panzers are easily mopped up. Worst of all a breakthrough has been achieved, and a bridgehead formed, south of Mogilev.

I have three armies to deploy; one in each front.

Northern Front - 42nd Army placed in Luga
Central Front - 49th Army placed in Smolensk
Southern Front - 37th Army placed in Kharkov

I place a fortification southeast of Mogilev.

I garrison Dnepretropavlosk.

I spend 15 of my 20pp to re-organise the army and hopefully increase activations etc.

Turn 11
Northern Front

Elements of 48th Army finally reach Narva.
27th and 31st Armies hold position around Riga and Lake Ilmen respectively.

Nothing else to do. Everything depends on how long these units can hold - assuming the Soviets get further replacement armies that is....

Five divisions of 24th Army target two divisions from 9th Army. Units from 22nd and 30th Army do the same. But in both cases the Germans are untouched.

The entire Soviet position could end up being turned from the south here...

5th August 1941
Turn 12

A look at the previous turn shows the German 18th Army wiping out the Baltic Military District and moving in on Riga.

3rd Panzergruppe has swept aside the Soviet first line of defence in the delta ahead of Orsha and 2nd Panzergruppe slowly increase their penetration of the southern flank.

In the Western Pripyat, 29th Army is almost entirely surrounded and to the east, Gomel is now under threat from 4th Army.

Finally in the south, Cherkassy is almost surrounded.

As the Black Eyed Peas once sang 'Where is the mud?'

I fortify the hex to the southeast of Pskov

I place a Garrison in Perekop

I place 38th Army in Zaporozhye

I place 50th Army in Orel. I really want to place in Gomel but I cannot take the risk.

And the leaves 52nd Army in Novgorod.

Nothing to report here. The Germans appear to have back tracked from Tallinn/Narva and are heading for Ostrov in numbers..

31st Army stays put and (hopefully) entrenching. I am hoping they can hold long enough for 52nd Army (Novgorod) and 42nd Army (Luga) to deploy.

This game has been a disaster because I thought I could try and hold with the Soviets and ended up chasing my own tail in retreat. I need to concede defeat here - the two panzergruppen have broken through and its time to run... and hope. There is only one slight problem. The Soviets cannot retreat over the river [8|]

Turn 13

Riga falls and another Paranoia attacks ensues, two commanders shot blah blah [8|] I really must read the manual on Soviet play....

The newly released 16th and 18th Army start to head north. The 4th Panzergruppe start to reduce the defence of 31st Army. 42nd Army starts to form a line.

I place 54th Army in Narva.

At least when playing the Soviets, the turns are over quickly! [:)]

The Army in the marshes disappears, 28th Army are the only Soviet units south of the breach created by 2nd Panzergruppe. The armies are all in retreat, leaving rearguards to try and disrupt things, but fact is the Germans are too powerful and its possible that a massive encirclement will happen; the obstacles in the south have gone.

I place an army in Voronezh. Its like Fall Blau already!

I think Cherkassy was completely the wrong place to defend - no natural obstacles. 46th and 47th Armies start to retreat and the fall back toward the Crimea becomes a rout.

Well any sort of defence sees the Germans slice through like a hot knife through butter. I therefore decide to at least try and hurt the invaders. Having sat there for ages building up fortifications, the position of 31st Army is quickly rendered untenable as the 4th Panzer simply out flank them. I therefore decide to leave a rearguard and go on the attack - 6 divisions attack the Totenkopf division and force it to retreat. A pyrrhic victory yes, but better than just being destroyed one by one for nothing.

I place 55th Army in Leningrad

Another minor victory in the Central Front east of Mogilev. The pesky three-division strong unit that had breached the junction between 28th and 34th Divisions is counter-attack by everything I have - and the hun and forced into a retreat.

Elsewhere things look decidedly grimmer....

17th August 1941
Turn 15

The last few turns are being played out now. I have made Odessa a fortress city and placed two armies in the Crimea, but that leaves the way to Rostov open. In the centre the Soviets are down to one line of defence and so as soon as that is breached by the panzers there is no way back. Meanwhile in the north 18th Army are at Tallinn and the other two armies are about to take Pskov and march on Novgorod.

A little tip: Never try and make a stand with the Soviets [:D]
