Gen. Goofy Does Barbarossa vs DicedT (No Diced T)

Post by warspite1 »

So hot off the heels of starting a game vs the AI, and barely a few turns into that, I am enjoying this game so much I thought I would give PBEM a shot.

I saw a request for an opponent from someone willing to play the Soviets and so here we are; with me playing the Germans vs Mike (DicedT).

The first noticeable difference to playing the AI (with no Fog of War) is of course the lack of visibility as to where the enemy are. Scary.

Can we turn turn FOW off please? [:D]

The good news is that my relations with von Leeb are better than before, and so I should be able to get Command Focus to the 4th Panzergruppe. However, I am about to make a number of decisions and that might change things....

Decisions made:

1. Develop the Austrian oilfields (4 Political Points (pp))
2. Fuel Allocation amongst the theatres. I favour no changes to the plan (0pp)
3. Maintain the Air Offensive for 4 more days (8pp)
4. Security Divisions - AGN. I do not want to cheese von Leeb off and so leave on mop up detail for another month (0pp)
5. Same with AGC (0pp). I want my theatre commanders happy!

I do the same for General Guderian's 2nd Panzergruppe in the centre.

I am also able to give Kleist the same benefits in AGS.

I have cards for adopting a blitzkrieg posture, but I believe that is already the case at the start of the game?

I allocate theatre artillery to 4th Army (AGC), 16th Army (AGN) and 17th Army (AGS)

Political Points left number 45.

Finland

Four Finnish divisions attempt to make headway down the Karelian Isthmus, and gain some early success in pushing back a Soviet division. However, a bruising encounter then ensues - I should have waited for reinforcements first.

North of Lake Ladoga the Finns seek to put pressure on Soviet forces straight away. There are no attacks however.

The plan is to push von Kuchler's 18th Army into Baltics, while Busch's 16th Army head for Kaunas. 4th Panzergruppe are to support both in case a breakthrough is required.

I will keep a check on how fuel usage goes too. We start with 9,000 in AGN.

Well, I feel that could have gone better. I tried to do too much and ended up doing nothing like as much as I wanted....

Worryingly, the panzers barely moved (in terms of overall distance) but almost half of AGN's fuel was used up. Something to watch in the coming turns.

To the southern sector now. The Romanians and 11th Army are not unlocked until the next turn.

Damn. About half-way through that turn I realised I had completely lost sight of Lvov..... I was not marching towards the city for some time [8|].

Fog of War makes a big difference.

I decide to send a subordinate to film a propaganda film (5pp) – Keitel and Goebbels are unimpressed. There is also an issue with the fuel. At a cost (4pp) I authorise my Chief of Staff to deal with it.

I look at no further reports at this stage.

I see that the Soviets are streaming back from the borders – and we have no time to lose in getting after them!

I think I need to be a bit careful with my Finns in the Karelian Isthmus - another hard battle ensures. In the north two Soviet divisions are pushed back though.

Before 16th Army, Kaunas lays only lightly defended and is taken pretty much on the march, while 18th Army are halfway to Liepaja. However, this advance comes at a cost as the German 4th Panzergruppe are punching at a lot of thin air in places.

The Germans make progress in the south, but Bialystok remains stubborn in defence. Further south in the Romanian sector, the Soviets make a show of fighting, which means the Germans need to be a little circumspect...
