Replay feature in the AAR

Post by Galaxy227 »

To start, replays in strategy games (and especially wargames) almost always significantly enhance the "satisfaction" of ending a game, and in Armored Brigade, I would argue this is true to a great extent.

After days of contemplating whether or not I should purchase Armored Brigade, I finally gave in. I finished my first game only a half an hour ago or so. What an incredible experience that was! Even better, I was greeted with a "view replay" option in the AAR. Christmas came early this year!

The replay was amusing to watch, I spent at least fifteen minutes replaying it. Analyzing my moves, role-playing about the various tactics implemented, firefights that took place, sacrifices made, etc. It was especially cool to see all of the units move about the map in unison, how they covered each other and used terrain (thanks to my tactical intelligence, not to brag...)! Unfortunately it left me wanting even more... as most indie games do.

If there were the ability to view enemy units, my god that would be fantastic. Yep, that's the whole point of this thread lol. Of course I'm not entirely sure how feasible this is, or whether or not the developers would even necessarily want it implemented (perhaps to keep the inter-workings of the AI more discrete), however I still would argue that it would significantly improve the "view replay" experience & AAR, and consequently the satisfaction of completing a game—which is the purpose of playing in the first place.

Alas, one can dream. I'd also like to add that this is an incredible game, and although there are a few hiccups and inconveniences, the scale and tactics in which Armored Brigade encapsulates is like no other game, and therefore is a new "high" that I'll constantly chase in wargames. You've scratched an itch I never knew I had! :)

Stay safe.

When starting a battle, there is an option “Show hidden in AAR” which will show you enemy units after the battle. It is turned off by default to increase the replayability of pre-set scenarios.

There are some others improvements to the AAR that have been suggested and diligently collected, but those will have to wait the sequel rework.

I've fiddled with the "Show hidden in AAR" option in multiple games now, yet I still don't see any enemy units or even "dummy" objectives on the replay map. I've tried starting battles and fast-running them for upwards of 10-20 minutes with "Show hidden in AAR" enabled, just to double check that I'm doing everything correctly, and again don't see enemy units until they come into my unit's LOS.

Is this a bug? Do I need to enable more than just "Show hidden in AAR?"

Edit 1: I think it's also worthwhile to note I've tried seeing enemy units with "Show hidden in AAR" both enabled & disabled, just for the sake of making sure it wasn't an error on my end. Still didn't see any units.

Edit 2: After a few hours more of playing, I've came to the conclusion that we must have misinterpreted each other, and perhaps I could've been more clear in what I was suggesting. I believe that you're referring to the "OOB" screen when you state "...which will show you enemy units after the battle." Although this is an interesting feature, it wasn't what I was originally talking about. What I was suggesting was the ability to see all enemy units on the "recorded replay" in the AAR, as currently AB only displays enemy units in replays that were spotted throughout a game. Apologies for the confusion.

The undetected AI units are never revealed in the AAR replays. It's partially true what you proposed earlier, saying that the AI actions are hidden to avoid making the player too familiar with them. There's no scenario scripting so the same AI is used in every battle.

The 'Show hidden in AAR' option reveals all the enemy units on the main map after finishing the battle, and also the neutral units, undetected smoke etc. This is not related to the AAR replay. If the option is enabled the dummy objectives are shown on the main map and also in the AAR replay.
