A few more Newbie questions
I am up and running in this game now ( at last ) but I have some more questions.
1 - Transport,If I make 10 trucks on my first turn for each HQ,how many turns before I have to make some more ? In other words,do these trucks last 10 turns or something,or do I have to keep producing them every turn, the same goes for trains.
2 - Artillery and AT guns,What is the range of artillery,AT guns and mortas ?If I have artillery in hex "A" will the range extend to hex "C" and the same question for AT guns and mortas
3 - Daisy chain HQs and sub HQs.How do I do this,If I have 1st HQ,2nd HQ and 3rd HQ,how do I add one or more HQs to 1st HQ ?
4 - Moving HQs,If I move any of my HQs ( including my supreme HQ )does the HQ or the units, staff inside that HQ lose rediness or experiance

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Trucks and Trains last until they are destroyed or disbanded. In that sense they are just like any other subformation. The only subformation in the base game that doesn't last until destroyed by an opponent, is the katushya, which dies once it's missile load is gone.
The only things with range are Artillery, Heavy Artillery and Infantry guns above level 1. Infantry guns above level 1, have a range of 1 hex, artillery 2 hexes, and heavy artillery 3 hexes, if memory serves me right. AT guns and mortars have only a combat range. Meaning they only shoot if in combat.2 - Artillery and AT guns,What is the range of artillery,AT guns and mortas ?If I have artillery in hex "A" will the range extend to hex "C" and the same question for AT guns and mortas
In combat things are defined as being front line or rear area. Mortars are Rear Area, AT Guns too. That means that they can only be targetted by frontline troops, that break through (when the symbols turn yellow). You as the player has no real influence as to when a unit breaks through... except making sure you have enough.
You simply assign an HQ to a different HQ down the chain, than the Supreme HQ. This is done the same way you assign the HQ to the Supreme HQ, you just choose a different HQ.3 - Daisy chain HQs and sub HQs.How do I do this,If I have 1st HQ,2nd HQ and 3rd HQ,how do I add one or more HQs to 1st HQ ?
No they don't. However staff loses experience when assigning new units to them. Sort of a simulation of coordination and control is something that needs to be gained.4 - Moving HQs,If I move any of my HQs ( including my supreme HQ )does the HQ or the units, staff inside that HQ lose rediness or experiance
Hope you are enjoying the game

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Hi and thanks again, yes, now that I know what I am doing I am enjoying this game very much.I it a much better version of The operational art of war III.I have played a few games ( but have not completed any yet ) because as I play I come up with more questions that I need answers for ( so far you have supplied 90% of those )
Now that you have answered my latest group of questions,I will try a refined tactic of the tactics that I mentioned in an earlier post.
Right from my first turn I am going to try defining a line and this will be my starting point of my defence. This way I will have all my units in a continus line with their sub HQs just behind them.I will move the supreme HQ up if it is too far behind ( hopefully this will make my defence/attack much stronger )
I get the impression that the Strategic map has a very usefull part to play in this game if a player has a better understanding of how to use it.If I am correct could you explain its proper use please.
I am sure there will be more questions as I move further into the game,as usual thank you for all your help.

Re: A few more Newbie questions
I have one more question for now though.
I dont fully understand the make a new formation.I know how to make a new formation ( the same way you make a sub HQ ) but I dont understand the point.I mean, can I just make a new formation and place it where I have just lost a unit/formation ? can I use it to shore up my line if it is weak in one place ? and, surely it cant be that easy to just make extra formations whenever you need them,so there must be something that I am missing here ?!

Only 90%. I better get that percentage up some then
Actually it really only serves the purpose of showing you where on the map you are, where the opponent territories are, and you can click on it to move to places quickly... which is nice when you have a bigger map....

Re: A few more Newbie questions
You can make a new formation ANYWHERE on the map, true. It will cost you some fuel to get troops into it, of course, unless it is on a rail line, then it will only cost you the transport capacity, that you also pay for the trucks in addition to the fuel. Then there is the payment of 1 Political Point for each formation, which actually can run up pretty fast, if you keep on losing formations and need new ones. Also there is the problem of transfers costing readiness for troops you send to it. This will make them fight worse, until they regain it. You really shouldn't for that reason alone place it in the front line.PussEKatt wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2024 12:37 pm I have one more question for now though.

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Transfering sub formations:
All my sub HQs now have sub formations in them.I tried to move 32 rifles and in another sub HQ I tried to move 2 light tanks and nothing happened. This is what I did.
1 - Selected a sub HQ
2 - Selected a sub formation
3 - selected where to transfer to
4 - Clicked "T"
Apparently I need 250 LandCap
Where do I see if I have enough LandCap ? also I tried to transfer 2 light tanks ( which cost a lot less in LandCap ) and still nothing happened.
I looked at the top of the screen and it has "Raw" and "Oil" but no LandCap

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Also,I have 2 tanks, how can I select them from the sub formations box ?
They should be able to move by themselves and carry some infantry with them, how do I do this and how do I do a "self transfer" which costs nothing ?
Thanks again

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Landcap is generated by trucks, while Railcap is generated by trains. The amount generated is determined by the amount of the number of Trucks you have or Trains you have, in that HQ. If you are not transferring from an HQ, only the subformations own current movement is taken into account. Landcap and Railcap are reset when the turn begins.
Whenever you transfer a subformation a list of things are checked in order.
- Is it able to move the distance, this turn, on it's own. If yes do so
- Is it able to move the distance if Railcap/Landcap is used (Hint, need rails the whole distance to do so, Trucks need fuel). If yes do so.
You are able to choose which of the two, railcap/landcap you use to transfer.
Often, if you don't plan on using any form of cap (landcap/railcap), you might as well make the unit, in the same hex, as the HQ, and then move it, if it has any movement left.

Re: A few more Newbie questions
1 - The units in my sub HQ are in a list on the right hand side. How do I move these units out from that list ?
also,my tanks should be able to move by themselves without using any LandCap etc. Also I only want to move my tanks 2/3 hexes, how do I do this and can they carry infintary on them ? If they can then how do I load infantry onto them ?
2 - Why is it that when I click on a sub HQ I get a list and not counters.
3 - In the "transfer" window,on the left hand side it shows 2nd HQ which has units that have been sent from my supreme HQ.On the right hand side, it has Kastl garrison with more units. Both sets of units are in lists. The Kastl garrison has a lot of units but when I select the Kastl garrison on the map thare are no units/counters in it ?
4 - I used "N" to make a new formation,I selected a HQ for this formation but when I click on this new formation ( on the map ) there is nothing there ?

Re: A few more Newbie questions
You transfer then via the transfer menu.
If they have movement left, yesalso,my tanks should be able to move by themselves without using any LandCap etc.
You put them in a formation, and then move the formation, or you make a formation and then transfer them into that formation. Also I only want to move my tanks 2/3 hexes, how do I do this
Yes, they can, if they are in a formation, with few enough infantry, then they move at tracked speed. Or in other words, they are carried. They do not carry them while being transferred.and can they carry infintary on them ?
[/quote]
They will be registered as being carried by the tank(s), if there are few enough to them being able to be carried. If they can then how do I load infantry onto them ?
That was your first question (which was more than 1 question).

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Any HQ may have more than 8 subformations in it. They show up in a list, if there are more than 8.
Maybe they desserted? All kidding aside, I have no idea. I cannot see your units. Maybe if you posted some pictures, I would be able to find out. This way however, there is really nothing I can do to answer.3 - In the "transfer" window,on the left hand side it shows 2nd HQ which has units that have been sent from my supreme HQ.On the right hand side, it has Kastl garrison with more units. Both sets of units are in lists. The Kastl garrison has a lot of units but when I select the Kastl garrison on the map thare are no units/counters in it ?
That is because you need to transfer subformations to it. The game does not know what your intent with making the formation was. So, it is essentially awaiting your command.4 - I used "N" to make a new formation,I selected a HQ for this formation but when I click on this new formation ( on the map ) there is nothing there ?

Re: A few more Newbie questions
I am unsure how else to answer you. Perhaps you can rephrase? Or maybe someone else can see what you mean and answer, we can wait for that too?
As for screenshots, you take them with the snipping tool that is built into windows. I am unsure how that works, since I am using a program I paid for, that does it better.

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Those 3 screenshots are identical.
From you description. Those tanks, with 30 AP, if in a formation where the APs of others have not been used, should be able to move on their own for some hexes. Of course if there are other subformations in the unit that cannot enter the hexes you want them to move into (like trains that can only move on rails), then they won't be able to move. Same goes if there are planes in the Formation.
Transferring them is an option, and then they would be able to (of their own power = self transfer) transfer a distance worth 30 APs.

Re: A few more Newbie questions
If the pictures shown are supposed to show the HQs with the units in a list, instead of as pictures, then that is because there is an officer in the HQ, and then there is no room to show the pictures, because the picture of the officer is shown instead.

I have 2 questions.

There are 3 entries in the sub formations box,I thought they are seperate formations ? So in the sub formation box ( on the right hand side ) if I have .
2 tanks
32 rifles
10 mortas
I thought that is 3 different formations, each with their owne movement points ? -
2Transferring them is an option, and then they would be able to (of their own power = self transfer) transfer a distance worth 30 APs.
How do I do a self transfer ? and also How do I add Infantry onto these 2 tanks ?

Re: A few more Newbie questions
Let us first be clear on what we are talking about. A formation consists of subformations. Think of the counter (the formation) as a unit, whereas the sub formations are it's contents.PussEKatt wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 12:28 pm ...

...
The 2 tanks have their own movement type (tracked), and can carry a certain amount of troops, not an unlimited amount of troops. How much they can carry depends on their carry stat, and what they are carrying, the weight stat. I am not quite sure what a Tank can carry, but it is more something along the lines of 5 rifle, rather than 21 (half of what is not tanks in your unit).
The Rifle and Mortars also have a movement type (foot), and it is somewhat less than that of a subformation going at tracked movement speed. Since not all are carried, they now move at foot speed. So every time the tanks move, they move at foot speed too. This causes them to lose the same amount of APs (Action Points) as the rifle and mortars.
So NO they are not three different formations, but three different sub formations, with a move calculated by the slowest one.
Like ALL transfers they are between counters. A counter is either an HQ or a unit. If a formation can move on its own the distance you want to transfer it, it is called a self transfer. A self transfer is equal to a regular transfer, with the only exception being that it does not use Transcap or Landcap. So neither a train or a truck is needed to make this transfer....
How do I do a self transfer ?
In short you don't. They will be part of the unit (counter/formation) that and the movement speed that is the SLOWEST in any given movement will be used. Carrying is automatic, if possible. You do not load them, or anything like that.and also How do I add Infantry onto these 2 tanks ?
