Three new Scenarios need scripting help

Post by Hairog »

I'm committed to assisting this series of excellent war games to its rightful place in wargaming history. As I said from the first beta I was given, and in my rating, "This simulation gets so many things right. It can be as complicated as you want yet can be played by letting the computer take care of the mundane tasks. The choices are there if you want to deal with them, or you can play the commander and chief and let the AI do the detailed work".

I badly want this series to fulfill their destiny of becoming a long-lasting ($ money for Al) classic. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the dearth of player designed scenarios is becoming a very formidable roadblock to that end.

I'm making a bit of a sales pitch here. I'm thinking of three potentially dynamite scenarios that would be excellent for the WarPlan franchise. But, I'm helpless when it comes to the scripts. I have no clue how to do even the simplest things. I need help. I will say that Al has graciously offered to assist me, but I don't want to take up his valuable time.

First, my bona fides: create dozens of alternate history scenarios for dozens of games. A few have caught on and become quite popular. For some reason, I was able to quite handily learn and use the scenario editor in the Strategic Command 3 franchise.

My first large-scale project was based on my six-book series, World War three 1946, which I began as a short story in the alternate history forum. I was having fun doing it, and then I noticed that I had 10,000 hits, then 100,000, then over 1,000,000. I thought to myself, I just may have good book series here. Problems were that until the forum, I'd never written anything of significance in my life. I analyzed my success on the forum and figured out that I'm not a good writer but a good and logical storyteller. I spin a great yarn. One group of the Mods and another single Mod are kinda popular.

SC3 Naval Mods for all Scenarios

If you frequented the SC3 forums, you would soon read uncomplimentary posts pertaining to the naval aspects of the series. IMO it was made to mimic land warfare and not a positive addition to the games. Yet, you can’t have a WWII simulation without a naval component.

I looked at the problems and then the editor and invented some workarounds etc. I believe that they have changed the naval game into a source of enjoyment and not frustration, while adding some historically accurate and needed details. The mods have been downloaded and discussed frequently. There have been numerous changes to integrate into the game itself, but only if they affect the naval game. New scenario suggestions

WP Scenario 1: World War Three 1946 - Stalin Strikes First.

I made my story of a World War III 1946 into a scenario for Strategic Command 3 Europe. It was a modest success. Nevertheless, it was selected to be included in the first Community Pack, and the historical gamer did an AAR on it for YouTube. It also took a lot of effort and many long nights.

I wish to bring it over to WarPlan but, I can't use the editor effectively and need help with the scripts. If you are seriously interested in helping me with the scripts and such, I will send you a free ebook version of the whole series, and you can decide if the story is worth it.

WPP Scenario 2: The Destruction of the Fuel Depos at Pearl Harbor

The scenario would be an incredible and, I believe, a groundbreaking alternate history in the Pacific theater. In my opinion, I judge this to be the most plausible and historically significant missed opportunity in the Pacific Theater. This alternate history was eminently possible, and by many accounts, should have happened.

Yet, I don't believe it's ever been offered as a scenario or alternate history in a computer simulation.

It is the failure of the Japanese to attack the fuel farms on Hawaii. Forget the shipyard, battleships, and even the carriers if present. This vast 4.5-million-barrel, complex was plainly visible and completely unprotected and the most crucial target in the Pacific theatre. There is evidence that a squadron of fighters with tracers could have destroyed the whole complex in one pass, and there is no question that the squadron bombers could accomplish the task easily. Nimitz stated, “We had 4.5 million barrels of oil out there, and all of it was vulnerable to .50 caliber bullets.”

What would have been so devastating is not the loss of fuel but the inability to replace it in anything of a timely manner. For you see, it took four years to fill it in the first place using the fuel oil tankers available at the time.

Believe it or not, there were even fewer tankers available to the Navy on December 7th. And most inexplicably, one of those valuable tankers, the Neosho, was not attacked at Pearl. It was avoided because it was in the way of an attack on a battleship.

Admiral Chester Nimitz contended that the war would have lasted at least another two years if those tank farms and their contents had been destroyed. Admiral King said essentially the same thing.

All naval operations would have had to emanate from the West Coast of the United States. The loss of Hawaii as a filling station would add 2000 miles onto any sortie contemplated. It would have necessitated an enormous tanker fleet. One that has never been seen in modern combat. Not only a tanker fleet but a fleet that could fuel ships at sea. It would have been an incredible nightmare. And hopefully, soon, it could be your nightmare to figure out.

WP Scenario 3: Fast Forward to the spring of 1941

The third scenario should be easily doable. But I can't seem to figure out how.

I don't know about you but, in strategically scaled games of World War Two in Europe, I get so bored invading Poland and France to get to the real choices presented by the situation at hand. So you're thinking, well, just skip ahead to the following scenario. But unfortunately, those scenarios offer you no choices as they are historically based.

For the axis, in 1941, you're committed to Operation Barbarossa. There are no if ands or butts you will be at war with the Soviet Union.
1942, you will be trying to survive the fighting in the Soviet Union.

Unless you start way back in 1939, there's no chance to contemplate the gamut of critical decisions that Axis had to make, such as:

- Delay Operation Barbarossa with the intention of forcing Great Britain to come to terms. Put maximum resources into taking Great Britain out of the war.
o Subset - give the Luftwaffe the increased range that would have been available with drop tanks. The extra fuel would have put all of the British Isles within range of the BF109. The fighters could escort the bombers to their targets and back. In addition, many of Great Britain's resource areas would now be within attack range of escorted bombers.

- Delay operation Barbarossa and concentrate on making the Mediterranean Sea an Axis lake.
o This would be accomplished by taking Malta and giving Rommel what he needed to take the Suez Canal.
o Head through Greece and Turkey to attack the Mideast from the north with the objective of getting to the Suez Canal and the British oil source in Kuwait.

- Focus on the southern strategy and Operation Fall Blau, and capture the oil-producing region of the Soviet Union concentrated near Baku.
o This could precipitate the possible invasion of Turkey, an interesting problem to solve in its own right.

Anyway, you get the picture because you wouldn't have started reading this post in the first place or have given up by now.

Sorry Mr. H.
If I knew how to code, let alone knew how to use the editor, I'd have a crack.
But I hope someone takes up your challenge.
I just push pixels.

A.

Interesting ideas. I will check out your book and SC3 mods. Not much of a modder though.
Cheers!
