the scenario of'deter, detect, defend ' is so difficult

Post by hanzawa1991 »

the scenario of'Deter,Detect,Defend ' is too difficult to me ,as there were so many enemy bombers that our fighters could not intercept them all :(
My city gets nuked all the time. Any good ideas?

Sounds like the scenario is working as intended, it was never intended to be easy although some found it so.

To be fair, I have not tried it with the missile logic and boost-coast performance models for AAMs. Your primary weapons are the execrable AIM-4 which had really poor performance in Vietnam, just a few year's after the Deter, Detect, Defend's hypothetical date. It may well be that changes in CMO, which provide improved fidelity between the simulation and real-life have broken the scenario. That said, it was written for an early iteration of CMANO for inclusion in Community Scenario Pack #2 as I recall and we're now up to #45?

There are some things that might help:

- The Seattle area is well defended by its Hercules batteries. Let these carry much of the weight defending the Puget Sound area and this allows your limited interceptor assets to be elsewhere. The SAM batteries probably have the best shot at intercepting the primitive Soviet ALCM, of which there are not too many.

- Missile ammo is limited and the turn-around times limit multiple sorties by individual planes. Therefore stick relatively close to air bases, do not intercept far out over the Pacific and never pursue a bomber that has already delivered its load. There are no points for kills and doing so wastes ammunition and time.

- The ANG F-89 Scorpions are slow and getting them into a favourable geometry for an effective attack can be difficult but they are well armed and have a good loiter time. Use them for tasks that play to their limited strengths.

- The AIR-2A Genies should provide one-shot-one-kill so everything that can carry them, should carry them until they run out.

- Vancouver is worth more negative VP than any other city. This was done to force the Player to at least attempt to defend it rather than to imply that it is intrinsically more valuable than US cities. Early reviews of the scenario, way back when, indicated that players would just sacrifice the city to better concentrate their assets over Washington state but the "N" in NORAD was for North American after all.

- You may be able to rebase some of your interceptors but check the magazines to make sure that the correct ordnance for the type of aircraft is available at the new base.

- Look out for the guns on the Red bombers. The AIM-4 IR and Sidewinder B AAMs in your arsenal are tail-chasers only and poor ones at that but benefit from short-range geometry. If you close to gun range, expect non-trivial interceptor losses.
