I'm having a hard time understanding the operation planner / air tasking order

I've read the manual entries on these additions, but remain pretty confused. A simple first question is about assigning units to multiple missions. I've assigned some units from a carrier to a strike mission to take out enemy radar. I'd like, when the radars have been eliminated, for units on that mission with munitions remaining to switch to a concurrently running strike mission against SAM sites that are protecting those radar installations. So in the mission editor, I find the units assigned to strike the radar and also assign them to the mission striking SAM sites. Is this going to accomplish what I hope for, if units remain with proper munitions? Will escorts (jammers) that I assign to both missions switch once the radars are eliminated? Another question along those lines, is there any way to sort or filter the available units in the mission editor when accomplishing this task?

As I'm doing this, I'm looking in the Air Tasking Order and not seeing any flights listed there. Does the scenario have to run a bit for that to populate? If so, can I re-assign units from withing the air tasking order?

I've watched a couple of videos that PGatcomb has up about this, but he moves very quickly (at least more quickly than I can follow) and doesn't explain many of the elements (at least not in a way that I'm able to grok), it seems his videos are aimed at players with more experience in the game than I have. I haven't found any others besided the official tutorials, which don't go into a lot of depth. So, any help in getting my mind around what's going on here would be greatly appreciated. It seems that once I grasp this it's going to really elevate my already considerable enjoyment in this game.

Make sure "use flightplans" box is checked and then select "create flightplans" and it should show up in the ATO.
