FBDs are not multi-role units. They are similar to HQ units, and contain support units directly attached. Multi-role units are things like Soviet rifle brigades. What exactly are you trying to do?

The FBD's are on map units. If you don't want to use them, you can send their support units to other HQs. Be careful because you can't transfer them back, and if you send to many out of the FBD, the FBD won't be able to operate.

and even if you detach some units the FBDs lose repair speed so instead of maybe 5 hexes they may then only repair 4 or less.
That is nothing you want to do in 1941 and 1942 when you are on the offensive.

So then do you place the HQ in areas with damaged rails, to effect repairs?

Thanx for your help

okay so I read the section, but I do not see how to exectue the rail repair. F1 does not seem to work. a play example might help. I appreciate your taking time to help me.

22.6.3. Rail Repair HQ Unit Movement
This requires the F1 key to be selected. Move the Rail
Repair HQ unit into a hex that is suitable for rail repair
using tactical movement. Select the RRC (Rail Repair Cost)
number that will appear on the Rail Repair HQ unit in the
unit bar if the unit has enough MPs to perform the repair.

You don't really need to do all that to repair a rail line.

1. Find FDB
2. Move FDB to broken rail line
3. Press the rail road repair hot key = 'r'

That's it.

Yes, just make sure the FBD unit is in a hex adjacent to a working rail line. You can't jump ahead.
