Exploring 3D Map Mod using 2D map assets
I wasn't quite satisfied with the 3D graphics, mainly because it was somewhat hard for me to get a feel for the terrain. So I wanted to simplify it a bit like playing tabletop gaming only in 3D.
This is the idea, something like playing miniatures on a 3D surface.
Here's an example, what do you think of the concept?

Re: Exploring 3D Map Mod using 2D map assets
I've been exploring "proof of concept" concerning a 3D companion mod to my 2D Boardgame Vibe mod. The concept being simplicity of graphics to focus attention visually to what is important to know at a glance while remaining aesthetically pleasing to look at. I used this concept with the 2D mod and want to see if it can be applied to a 3D equivalent.
I took three screenshots, all at the same location on the same map. The first two are of the 2D mod working with the potential 3D mod, the third screenshot is with no mods activated.
I think it has potential...

Unfortunately, I don't see the images in the last post. They are all broken for me.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.
I think for me and maybe others that grew up with Risk and Panzer Leader, stylized graphics in a game board environment hits the sweet spot.

If possible, I'd recommend adjusting the colour of the marshes/swamps to a just a tad darker blue than the other water features.
I think that would look better.

Re: Exploring 3D Map Mod using 2D map assets
Yeah, I took note of the marsh/swamp vibrancy, in the 2D mod it isn't as striking because the overall color saturation level is high for that boardgame feel. But in the 3D environment it stands out a bit too much because the color of those assets are somewhat muted comparatively.
Thank you for your feedback, Jason... appreciate it.

For a first test I went with a close approximation to the rice patty water... I think the sage was a little too vivid for the 3D map.Jason Petho wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 3:30 pm If possible, I'd recommend adjusting the colour of the marshes/swamps to a just a tad darker blue than the other water features.

I am no expert - on modding or with CS:VN - but this looks very, very exciting.
Best wishes on a brilliant graphics mod for a brilliant game.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and encouragement.
I believe I've finished getting the mod together, I'm just doing some playtesting at this point.
Here are a couple Dak To pics...

Re: Exploring 3D Map Mod using 2D map assets
I just started playing JTVN and was very happy to see that this mod (Community Mod - 3D Tabletop Gaming Mod) made it into the game. And then I noticed during play that unidentified enemy units do not show up at all, not even a "?"... so I have to toggle back and forth to 2D to see the "?" units. I really like the look but am rather disappointed with this bug. Hoping this has been fixed or is planned for.
