Player Survey - Campaign Series: Cold War

Post by Crossroads »

With the reimaged Campaign Series: Vietnam 2.00 and Middle East 3.00 updates soon released, it’s time to look ahead once more.

Please find below a set of questions where we’d appreciate your insights regarding our next Campaign Series game: Cold War 1948–1985.

Your feedback is highly valued and will help guide our design decisions during development.

Note: All answers are optional. If you prefer not to answer a particular question, simply move on to the next one.

As with the previous survey, we’ll share the results oncw they are available

Thank you in advance!

Best regards,

Hi Guys
I am very pleased to see that you are considering setting the game so that in can be played using the PBEM++ system as my experience has been that this makes it much easier to find opponents.

If you do decide to do this perhaps something like the system used for the FOGII & P&S games for allowing players to download user created scenarios from within the game could be looked at also.

Finally on the subject of campaigns have you looked at using something like the system employed by WDS’s “Squad Battles” “Panzer Battles”, Napoleonic, ACW and Musket & Pike games series.

Strong points of this model are that you can fight whole campaigns using PBEM and that its relatively straightforward to the community to make campaigns for the game as well.

It is worth having a look in particular ad the campaign that they have done for their “Battles of Normandy” and “Battles of North Africa 1941” titles.

Kind regards
Ian

Cheers Ian,

The survey certainly points to direction of PBEM++ for H2H play, and now that we finally have the new front end available, something to discuss with Matrix. I am not familiar with the games you mention, but I am sure there are game play videos I can have a look at figuring how they have implemented the interface.

We'd love to have some type of a campaign mechanics back in the game. That would likely require more hands at Visual Studio though. Linked campaigns have not been actively dropped, it is just that there's not been enough time to keep it constantly updated as the engine and data has evolved.

I said, in the survey, that I was very keen to have full CSEE scripting for CSME, but didn't manage to add what I'll add here, that if it's a choice between getting something Cold War out quickly and spending time scripting CSME then I would hands down prefer you get on with the CW title! Thanks.

Hi Crossroads

Actually you can do better than that the WDS website https://www.wargamedesignstudio.com/ has articles in the "News" section on how the campaign system works (one for the "Squad Battles" series and one for the "Musket & Pike" one and their free Demo for the "Squad Battles" game that deals with the US invasion of Grenada includes a couple of simple campaigns. The "Squad Battles" game "Advance of the Reith" that covers fighting on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1942 also has additional documentation on how to build campaigns and now includes a straightforward user created scenario .

Hope this helps

Kind regards

Ian

Any chance you can point out specifically where they describe the campaign?

I took a quick look through the news section and nothing jumped out for me.

I was looking at this post Campaigns in the pre-twentieth century games, it was an interesting read.

Our Linked Campaign code remains available in old and deprecated front end source code. I would very much like it to have making a return at some stage. Maybe after the Summer update? Fingers crossed.
