Titans of Steel on modern systems

I saw that Matrix Games has made their old game Titans of Steel free, and wanted to go back and play it again. But it apparently doesn't work on modern systems, citing an error for some of the font-drivers. The font in question went obsolete in 2008 or so, and also doesn't work on modern systems.

Anyone have some tips or ways to configure it so it's playable again. Other than the obvious thing of installing a windows XP virtual machine and just emulating my problems away.
