I am planing a ''C.S.A.'' 5 days trip to Richmond and Charleston for next week.

Do you guys have any advises, tips, suggestions and good address for me in that confederated area ?.

Charleston: Fort Sumter, of course. Also recommended: Fort Moultrie, downtown, and the USS Yorktown (if memory serves, that's the ship anchored there).

Between Charleston and Richmond: Fort Fisher just south of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Richmond vicinity: Petersburg, Seven Days Battlefields, Fredricksburg/Spotsylvania, Wilderness, Chancellorsville.

Because of the huge number of battlefields and other sites in and around Richmond, you probably need more time there than in Charleston, but both cities are great destinations for the history buff.

Last month I went on a B.S.A trip to Charleston and echo the suggestion above to visit Ft. Moultrie and Ft. Sumter. Amazing the amount of history that exists between those two forts.

We spent two nights on the Yorktown so I would highly recommend a visit to the carrier. They've done an amazing job of allowing you access to important areas of the carrier through 6 tours as well as numerous areas converted into museums. The destroyer Laffey and submarine Clamagore are berthed right next to the Yorktown but unfortunately only the Clamagore is accessible. I would have loved to have seen the Laffey up close...amazing what that boat survived.

I recommend a visit to Boone Hall and Drayton Hall Plantations. Both in Charleston area. I haven't been to the other Plantations so can't comment on them. Also take a cruise tour around the harbor, I liked the Haunted Ghost Tour. As others have said the Yorktown is a must visit.

I went to Charleston back in June with my boys and father-in-law. You can get to the ships and take a boat to Ft Sumter from Patriots Point which is across the harbor from Charleston. We really enjoyed seeing the carrier, sub and coast guard cutter, although the destroyer was closed. My dad served on a DE and DD during WWII, not the same class as here, but similar and that brought back a lot of good memories for me.

Manassas/Bull Run is not too far from Richmond, maybe another 90 minutes...

You could head down I-64 from Richmond and hit this place.  If you head up to Manassas, and you can squeeze another day into your trip you might think about taking in Antietem and Gettysburg too. It will be worth it if you've never been there.

Fort McHenry and the USS Constellation is in Baltimore and is recommended if time is available.

What is USS Missouri like now? Is it retired? The last I saw of it was in Under Siege.

I made a wonderful CSA trip. Beautiful museum in Richmond and Charleston.
Flags, uniforms, weapons, etc. Also great architecture and nice restaurants.
I have to go back for the battlefields. [:)]
