I hope the game factors in the effect of freed slaves on the Union armies, especially post Emancipation Proclamation.

Well, if the slaves are going to be part of the game, will the Southern player be allowed to change their strategy towards said slaves. Just because Abe freed them in 1863, didn't mean they were free, until Union advances into slave held areas.AndySfromVA wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 2:55 pm I hope the game factors in the effect of freed slaves on the Union armies, especially post Emancipation Proclamation.

Slaves had extra incentive to flee the southern states post proclamation and joined the Union armies in droves. Most didn't fight but helped out in many other ways. The exodus of the slaves was very detrimental to the Confederate war effort.

Union White soldiers weren't sitting on Little Round Top, saying, "Gee, this is awesome. I'm making $13/bux month. I'm ready to munch a bullet in my mouth/jaw, take cannon blast to legs, maybe a bayonet to the stomach to free Cunta Kinte."

I'd suggest you read this scholarly book:ElvisJJonesRambo wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 2:55 pm Union White soldiers weren't sitting on Little Round Top, saying, "Gee, this is awesome. Soldiers, Slavery and the Civil War By Chandra Manning.
This issue is alot more complex than you seem to think it is.
Here's one excerpt:
In 1863, Sgt. Cyrus Boyd of Iowa encountered a black child, put on the auction block by her master, who was also her father. "By G-d," Boyd exclaimed, "I'll fight till hell freezes over and then I'll cut the ice and fight on." The men of the 13th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment agreed that slavery was "the sole undeniable cause of this infamous rebellion, that it is a war of, by, and for Slavery, is as plain as the noon-day sun."
Mind you, a lot of white Union soldiers were indifferent to the slavery issue, and many were bigoted...but not all. As the war progressed into the south, many white Union soldiers started to change thier views after seeing first hand the horrors of this 'peculiar institution' e.g. slavery. This is documented in hundreds of letters to home.
Perhaps though, this maybe a difficult read by someone who apparently never got above a 3rd grade education.

Re: Strategic Command: American Civil War Announced
Oh, I don't doubt the many abolitionists, from the top of the political ladder down to the dude in the trench, from the North. Plenty of them. What proportion/percent of folks actual fight for "what we're told" by the press. Could be said of any side, any war. The soldiers that did NOT believe in the issue of slavery, didn't write books. I doubt most even thought about. Their writings are probably letters home, "Dear Mary, I'm in Virginia now, I can hear the Confederate Calvary scout our camps by night, Johnny's cannons ring by day. The food is awful, so I shoot a squirrel when there's time. My unit is tired, I don't bother to make friends because they die constantly. I look forward to coming home. Tell Mom I miss her. With love, Willard".
List #1: Soldiers that fought for slaves:
--Abolitionists
--some religious dudes. If God freed the Moses, we can free black slaves.
--soldiers of conscious
--those who were eyewitness that grew into the cause
--average Joes who need a cause to give their possible death a reason.
List #2 People that did not fight slaves, they don't write books.
-draft dodgers who didn't even show up to don a uniform. Gotta include them. 200,000 of 800,000 drafted after 1863 never went near a recruiting post, tossed their call up papers in the burn pile.
-deserters, life on the Oregon Trail panning gold.
--Quakers, conscientious objectors, some religions dudes
--racists
--average Joes, that needed a paycheck and just wanted to survive
--rich dudes, that paid a poor dude to show up for duty for them. Yes, they paid them and it was legal.
In my unofficial and unscientific stats, it's easy to say List #2 if bigger than List #1.
5% really wanted to free slaves
5% sure, whatever, I'll free slaves, why not, reason for this war.
90% didn't give it a thought, just wanted to survive.
I'd say Union Soldiers went by this:
1) Drafted, I'll do as told.
2) It's a paycheck, got nothing else better to do but get caught up in the mayhem of the world.
3) Pride, gotta kick some Southern butt for being rebels
4) God is on our side.
....
10) freeing slaves
An American Trilogy,
Elvis
Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old things they are not forgotten
Look away, look away, look away Dixieland
Oh, I wish I was in Dixie, away, away
In Dixieland I take my stand to live and die in Dixie
'Cause Dixieland, that's where I was born
Early Lord one frosty morning
Look away, look away, look away Dixieland
Glory, glory hallelujah
Glory, glory hallelujah
Glory, glory hallelujah
His truth is marching on
So hush little baby
Don't you cry
You know your daddy's bound to die
But all my trials, Lord, will soon be over
Glory, glory hallelujah
His truth is marching on
His truth is marching on

Re: Strategic Command: American Civil War Announced
Even as they carried out their sanctimonious campaign against slavery (they didn't get the abolition religion till the slave trade was stopped and they couldn't sell them anymore), the North was simultaneously waging genocide against the Sioux in Minnesota and the Dakotas. Allegedly even passing out smallpox infected blankets. The genocide continued even up to 1890 and Wounded Knee.
Note that the Nazis were guilty of using slave labor. But it's hardly noticed against their genocidal crimes.

It's not like the Indians were having prayer meeting. They butchered each other. Took other tribes as slaves. Branded them. Torture. Put bones in their nose. Pounded drums. Had Idols unto animals. Barked at the Moon. Carved up their skin. And worshipped strange gods. Their judgment day had come.
Far as the US Civil War game: the Indians were a non-factor. Well, except for the dude in the Outlaw Josey Wales.

I trust the designers will consult widely among the most reputable scholars and data to address issues like the economic impact of slavery, the contributions of African Americans as Union soldiers, and the role of indigenous communities in the war (e.g., Stand Watie). These are complex but fascinating topics.
Most wargames, especially on the US Civil War, stick solely to just simulating the actual fighting to avoid offending anyone.
But if you want to deal honestly with the broader political, economic, social, cultural and diplomatic factors at play, which informed and shaped the military aspects, you are going to step on some toes. You need to go in with eyes open and accept this. Even on just the military stuff, e.g., the ratings of the generals, you are never going to make everyone happy.

Some especially from New England were passionate abolitionists. Others like many New York Irish joined the Union Army to learn skills they could use to drive the Brits out of Ireland. Most Southerners (the great majority of whom owned zero slaves) fought to defend their States against Yankee invasion and could care less about defending plantation aristocrats.

So... I just got the email with my Beta Key for this software, which is really coolBillRunacre wrote: ↑Sun May 08, 2022 9:10 am Hi Christolos

but...
...It didn't give me any link to go download the software (or where I'm supposed to go to enter the key), and when I went to the Matrix store to find it, it still only says "coming soon".
Any ideas?
Re: Strategic Command: American Civil War Announced
Try going to the beta forums (you will have access now). They have a thread there called getting started. It has links to download the beta.
Re: Strategic Command: American Civil War Announced
Make sure you check your email throughly. My invite was from Matrix and it was hiding in my promotions folder.
