suddenly it takes 60 seconds from executing the WiTP quick start shortcut until I see the first intro graphic. THis used to take about 20, on a p-4 3.2 Ghz with 2GB of RAM.

Combined with the CTD when exiting the save game menu (and yes I wait 5-10 sec and it still crashes every 5th time) this is a drag..

any ideas on the slow startup? It isn't even grinding the hdd most of the time, it seems to be doing nothing for 30 of the 60 seconds.

Silly question time...

Are you patched up to 1.4? The sorts of problems you're reporting sound like the basic adam and eve issues from back in 1.0. Lets eliminate that first... Then go from there... Cause from the looks of things your machine should have AMPLE processing power.

that is a very good question, and it's my bad for not putting something so basic in my first post, but the answer is yes, I am patched up to 1.4

Try skipping the video intro by renaming directory VIDEO to noVIDEO, and see how quicker that makes it.

Something might be taking longer to decode the video streams.

wait, no, it's back. 60 seconds to launch game even with video renamed to novideo. I used a file activity monitor and it is opening, reading, and closing virtually every file in the art directory and subdirectories, and thats 400+ MB of stuff.... wow! Suggestions?

Shut it off. (I assume you mean an anti-virus program of some kind. If not, shut that off, too.)

nope.. the WiTP .exe is at least looking at every file in the art folder and beneath. THe hard drive isnt griding so is must be checking to be sure they exist and enumerating file sizes for some reason. I don't even run AV on this machine (I'm an IT guy and I know what not to do).

I've pinned it down to this at the moment: If I use the quick start it takes ~60 sec. If I launch the game menu shortcut and tell the menu to play WiTP it takes ~10sec. Can anyone tell me what it might be doing differently when launched those two ways?

and this is with a clean fresh install of 1.5

Running XP? It has this stupid feature of updating the last accessed timestamp on files ... first thing one turns off on a non-server environment. No idea why Microsoft defaulted it to on, it just wastes your machine horsepower on something you have no use of.

XP only folks:

To disable this feature, open up regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem. Create/modify the DWORD value “NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate” and set the value to 1.

okay....i opend up the regedit....went there but there is no “NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate” for me to edit

I have never dont this before, infact I had never heard of regedit..lol

I have three things listed where you said to go they are

NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
Win31FileSystem REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
Win95TruncatedExtensions REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

each of those has a lil blue icon in front of them. Did I go to the wrong place?

thats right, you need to right click on the right panel and add the key

when you right click, you pick DWORD

name it NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate

then double click the name and set the value to 1

Thanks Frag, after I had fixed my hard drive WitP was still taking 1 hour to complete a turn. However, I created this DWORD registry and it fixed everything. Now everything is so much faster, turns take only mins to process now.

You might want to search around on the Internet for Windows XP tweek guides. This is one of many things that an out of the box installation has that simply wastes your machines resources and makes you need a faster computer for nothing. Probably a half-dozen services that you can shut off too.
