The Story Of The Malakand Field Force
Now here's a good read from 125 years ago:
Chapter 1 - the background - should have been read more widely

RE: The Story Of The Malakand Field Force
From the article:
"But the Mahommedan religion increases, instead of lessening, the fury of intolerance. It was originally propagated by the sword, and ever since, its votaries have been subject, above the people of all other creeds, to this form of madness. In a moment the fruits of patient toil, the prospects of material prosperity, the fear of death itself, are flung aside. The more emotional Pathans are powerless to resist. All rational considerations are forgotten. Seizing their weapons, they become Ghazis—as dangerous and as sensible as mad dogs: fit only to be treated as such. While the more generous spirits among the tribesmen become convulsed in an ecstasy of religious bloodthirstiness, poorer and more material souls derive additional impulses from the influence of others, the hopes of plunder and the joy of fighting. Thus whole nations are roused to arms. Thus the Turks repel their enemies, the Arabs of the Soudan break the British squares, and the rising on the Indian frontier spreads far and wide. In each case civilisation is confronted with militant Mahommedanism. The forces of progress clash with those of reaction. The religion of blood and war is face to face with that of peace. Luckily the religion of peace is usually the better armed."
Well all nations have some kind of "above the people of all other creeds" titles. Whether it can be Ghazis, Ataman or a Queen,King or Sultan -Ertuğrul was called Gazi (Ghazi) or Ataman Ertuğrul; Ottoman founder- and all generous spirits needs to obey in before, problem here whether about their religion, religious fanaticsm or because they were poor. RE: The Story Of The Malakand Field Force
Certainly on topic as an account of historical conflict and I'm sure Afghanistan is on all our minds right now. I'd like to say a lot more about that, but as it would get political, I have to follow the forum rules as well.
Thus, I'd like to post a reminder that discussing Afghanistan of the past and even sticking to military operations of the present is fine, but stay away from discussions of religion and current politics within this forum.
Regards,
- Erik

RE: The Story Of The Malakand Field Force
If I say that those who own the Kalashnikovs always win (in the end) against those who own the M16s, is that political?

I would say that shows your ignorance. [;)]

Completely unecessary comment which seems like an attempt to push the envelope and rile people up. My earlier advice remains. Chill.

Yes, religion is the number one definer of this world. Therefore, lets not talk about it.

Son, I'm the only one who's gone in the White House, without an appointment, without an invite and immediately seen the POTUS. While visiting with President Nixon, I was carrying & had some recreational party favors. First one, ever. Came outta there with my FBI credentials, deputized.
My house is now the most visited in the United States,
