Stjeand (Axis) vs Nirosi (Allies) Stjeand may look

Post by Nirosi »

Allied turn of September 1st, 1939

The tensions of the last months erupted in flame at the Polish-German border. 21 years after the end of the last war, Germany, the United Kingdom (and Dominions) and France are at war once again. This time, nominally at least, over Poland.

With lighting speed, the German army reached and captured Lodz while bypassing and besieging Poznan and Krakow. The polish army suffered heavily during this first stage of the German attack and its dispersed remains were ordered to converge toward Warsaw. Two isolated cavalry divisions were sent deep into German territory in a desperate attempt to draw German units away from Poznan.

British intelligence intercepted a massive German build up at the Danish border. This seems to mean that Denmark might be the next German target in this new war, or maybe it is a decoy hiding a direct attack into Norway. However, the 2ème bureau of the French army dismissed the second option as unrealistic.

Paris and London offered preventive help to Denmark, but Copenhagen refused. After much discussion between Daladier and Chamberlain, it was decided not to risk Allied resources in the area.

In other news, Lyon was severely bombed prompting a reorganization of French air cover.

Hi folks. Here it is, another AAR. I hope you will enjoy the story. I believe Stjeand will make one as well from his perspective so you will be able to see who lies or bluff better [;)]

Allied turn of September 15th, 1939

The proud defenders of Poznan and Warsaw surrendered to vastly superior forces. However, against all odds, Krakow’s defenders managed to hold the city albeit with horrendous loses. But it is only a matter of days before the defenses will collapse.

Denmark was overrun in a matter of hours. A German general was heard saying that most peacetime field exercises were more dangerous than this invasion. Berlin guaranteed the Danish government some degree of autonomy for internal affairs during the occupation. The remains of the army and the fleet remained impounded in ports and barracks, still nominally under Danish control.

A French agent passing as a tourist in Rhodes, Miss Toussaint (not her real name), noticed the massive arrival of Italian soldiers on the Island. The Allies are wondering if Italy’s intentions might less peaceful than Rome reassurance about its neutrality would lead to believe?

In other news, two U-boat flotillas have started hunting in the North Atlantic with some moderate success. For now, the situation is under control, but some scenarios analysed in Portsmouth are still worrisome. The Royal Navy is monitoring the situation and analysing future needs to hopefully contains the threat that will only grow bigger.

Mme Toussaint photographed by an Italian officer suspecting something. She made sure to recover the negatives and also made sure that the body will never be found.

Allied turn of September 29th, 1939

Polish defenders collapsed in Krakow after one last German push. All remaining Polish units attempted to either surrender or flee to neutral countries but were ruthlessly hunted down by German troops.

At sea, in a game of cat and mouse, the French navy was put to contribution in a way that would let the Germans believe that their move toward the Southern Atlantic was taken seriously. However, most escorts were kept North. It will not be known until the end of the war if the Germans fell into the trap, or if they simply chose randomly where to got next, but they moved back to the still well defended Northern convoy route, now beef-up with extra traffic toward Canada as well. One of the two U-boat flotillas was badly mauled during the two weeks losing an estimated 60% of its submarines. Allied merchant loses remained very reasonable at about 200 000 tons for the period and about 600 000 tons since the start of the war.

In the Soviet Union, Stavka ordered a modest but continuous recruiting effort to beef-up the army and also rearranged the Air Force nomenclature. A fighter and a bomber division seem to be grounded in South-West Ukraine and specialists have been sent to identify the reasons. It could be mechanical failings or even some spare parts shortages due to Trotskyist saboteurs.

The Sloop HMS Rochester participated in the sinking of at least one U-boat, possibly two, while escorting a convoy toward Glasgow.

Allied turn of October 27th, 1939

Still quiet on the Western Front. A battered U-boat Flotilla (and an intact one probably) lies in port at Brunsbüttel as a tempting target for British carriers. However, based on estimation of Luftwaffe deployment, and baring good weather, the German retaliation could be as high as 7 waves of air attacks on the fleet and certainly no less than three with the real number probably in between. The Admiralty therefore decided to play it safe.

The Admiralty also reported the loss of 9 or 10 small escort crafts since the start of the war without specifying the dates of the losses. The Prime Minister Office was severely displeased with the Admiralty withholding such important information! The Admiralty apologized and quoted some administrative confusion in the communication channel, the usual Admiralty formula for laziness or incompetence!

Allied turn of November 10th, 1939

All rainy on the Western Front.

Sir Dudley Pound commented about his regrets of not having gone forward with the plan to attack the submarine base at Brunsbüttel as it has been considered just before the rain came over the North Sea. To which Vice-Admiral Moore replied: “Sir, you know very well that had we gone forward with the plan, it would not have rained to protect us”.

Some small actions in the Atlantic but not much else. The huge German buildup continues on the French and Benelux borders.
