Guys, is there a good site where you can take a look at what satellites will be overhead when? Building a slightly future scenario am not that familiar with space ops. Thanks

Isn't that in the game already?
You mean apart from CMO itself?

OK just noticed 'Satellite pass predictions' in the Game menu. Drawing a blank so assume that I need to add a satellite to the scenario before this will work.

So I think I still need an out of game map to chose which ones to add - might be missing something completely

Any tips, hints or links on how to get the best out of this feature would be appreciated.

Tx

http://celestrak.com/ (press button to load tracker) graphic intensive

https://www.n2yo.com/ less graphic intensive

For looking up TLE\Launch data

In my experience, when you add a satellite, its gets put in the position it should be in, in its orbit, for the date and time. You cant place them wherever you want and when you change the time, they move to their updated position according to date and time. So you could add the satellites you are interested in, and see where they end up. In this way, CMO contains all of the information to predict where every satellite would be at any given time - which is very plausible as they do have predictable paths.

You can get unclassified information from here for example:

https://www.heavens-above.com/main.aspx
https://celestrak.com/
https://www.n2yo.com/satellite/?s=49011

The way it works is that every so often NORAD release information on each satellite's orbit in the form of a "Two Line Element" or TLE. You can use a TLE to predict a satellite's trajectory to a "high" level of accuracy for only a few days or weeks, as orbits slowly change due to a little bit of drag, the tug of the moon, and the fact that the earth is not a perfectly spherical gravity source, etc. Also, if a satellite fires it's thrusters to intentionally change its orbit, then the the TLE will obviously no longer be accurate. But for a CMO scenario "high accuracy" is probably not too important.

CMO does have a documented updateorbit method as part of the unit wrapper in the Lua API so that you could use a real-world TLE to recalculate an orbit, if you wish.
Just keep in mind that real military/intelligence satellites are often classified by their owners and what is available in CMO is probably just a guess in many cases, anyway. Don't expect to find information that isn't publicly available on a satellite that does not exist.

edit:
Didn't see the above posts.

That's great
