I was looking at research and am unclear about a few things. First, what do these words mean when looking at different research categories? Are they flavor or have some real meaning?

Next question. Can warships choose to switch upgrade path after they are on the map? i.e. Can a "battle grp" built as "large warships" switch to "warships" advancement track after it's on the map?

3rd question. It seems that to change unit advancement track 30 production are spent. Is there a free way to do this? For example by merging 2 different track units together? Manual says that merging unit will adopt the advancement track of the unit into which it is merging so this seems free? Is this correct?

They are just flavour.

No. As far as I am aware only land and air units can change their upgrade path.

Yes merging infantry divisions with other divisions or small corps will change the advancement track to the unit merged into. But note that the Tech level will be the lowest of the merged units. For example, merging a 39 Anti-tank division with a 41 Assault small corps will result in a 39 Assault large corps.

Also, changing a unit advancement type does not always cost 30. It depends on the units strength. So changing a full 20 strength air unit from escort fighter to interceptor costs 20 production. Changing an understrength 5 strength large corps from Assault to Anti-tank costs 5 production, etc.
