It is very hard one - i tried it more than 7 times and all failed. Please check my job and let me know how my action can improve.

1. Clear almost enemy CAP with F-15 supported by EF-111

2. While doing that, use 4 F-16 and 4 F-4 escorted by F-15A and EF-111 to eliminate 2 radars and lonely SA-20 north part of Keflavik airport. Also 2 F-117 armed with Maverik bombed Big bird Radar inside Iceland. Also use Harpoons to sink soviet warships at east of Keflavik.

3. After that, Use all of left HARM armed aircraft and refuel them south of the Iceland and approach to the Keflavik airport with almost 7~8 EF-111 and 2 EA-6B also approach as close as possible at Maximum altitude.(inside of maximum range of enemy AA missiles but maintain range which enemy AA cannot attack) Also 2 EC-130 is right outside of the maximum range of enemy AA at 32000ft. All of OECM aircrafts are south east of Keflavik, right behind HARM aircraft approaching course.

4. HARM-Armed aircraft approach at minimum altitude to right behind south mountain of Keflavik Airport, and pop-up and launch HARM to enemy AA missile Battery(2 missile each, only targeting the long range AA like Sa-20, Sa-10 and Sa-12.) I did fire all of HARM same time at first try, however they all shot down. So from second try I use wave attack made SEAD AC approach by the squadron ( 4~8 aircraft) and fire HARM. This seems more effective then before however when i use all of HARM missiles only 4~5 HARM can hit the target and even that, target SAM is still seem active.

5. After use all of HARM, I launched plotted ALCM from B-52(make them approach behind the mountain at southeast of Keflavik) however they are shot down.

Please let me know where I do wrong or any other better way to eliminate them. NF-18 is going to make me crazy....

Hi ditrich08, it's been a while since a played this one but it certainly is a beast! It sounds like your strategy is dead on what you need to do. If memory serves taking out the inland radars will eventually prompt the Soviets to light up all of their radars around Kef, making targeting them much easier.

After that, bringing successive waves of your SEAD aircraft at min altitude in from the south and launching massed volleys of HARMs should eventually wear down the SA-20s around Kef. Make sure each wave is supported very closely by your EW aircraft and that you eliminate the couple of radars that are on the southern slope of the mountains along the southern peninsula. The first wave may see only a couple of HARMs get through, but the next one will have 3-4 get through, and the third wave should really plaster the defenses enough for your CALCMs to finish the job, and then your Aarkvarks can start going after the runways and other targets.

One note, I think the database still has the minimum release altitude for the GBU-15s at 10000'. I've read that realistically the GBU-15 is designed to be lobbed at its target from low altitude to deal with just this sort of tactical problem. I know CMO doesn't model "lobbing" but just dropping the minimum release altitude for a GBU-15 to 2000' or so would dramatically change this scenario, allowing you to bring your F-111s in at low altitude from the south, pop up to 2000' at the last minute and lob the bombs into Kef while the 'Varks dive for the waves to avoid the return fire.

Hope that helps!

Wow I didn't expect this very kind comment. Thank you very much!!

Acutally i saw your AAR about this scenario when first try failed and that was very helpful. With your AAR and comment now i try again till eliminate that horrible SAMs.

I didn't know about new information about GBU-15 at all...now I can count them in SEAD mission too!

Hi, I just joined this forum last week, and this exchange highlights exactly why I broke my own "no new forums" rule. This was a detailed and polite question, and someone took care to read it thoroughly and provide a nice response. I know that one day I will be asking the questions, and hopefully eventually answering questions. Sorry to bomb your thread--it's just so nice to see the great community here. Best.

Hi ditrich08, just to clarify, I don't think you can use the GBU-15s in a SEAD role just yet...I think their min release altitude is still 10000', but I've also hear or read that the devs are planning to lover the min altitude for all GBUs to 2000' feet eventually, which will give a whole new dynamic to this scenario in particular.

Good questions.

One thing I noticed is that you write that your jammers (EF-111 and EA-6Bs) are at maximum altitude and the HARM shooters at low altitude.
You can try to bring the jammers lower which would increase your jamming performance in this game.
Keep the jammers near the altitude of the ones you want to protect is the challenge.

Maybe this helps.

Oh GBU-15's launch altitude not changed yet? Thank you for advise...

Thank you Blast 33, I put jammers in high altitude just worried about mountain block the jamming signal. But with your advise, I'll try them lower! Thank you!

I would think if jammers are being blocked by mountains, you could use those same mountains to mask your ingress for your strike. That would hide your flight from SAM radars.

Hello ditrich08

This is one of the toughest scenarios in Northern Fury, so don't get discouraged.

The three things I would add to the comments above is that:

1. Your F-117 Night Hawks are absolutely critical, positioning them stealthily before things get hot is important
2. Use your TALD to good effect with Bering Only Launches timed to confuse the bad guys. The confusion will not last long though
3. Time your CALCMs to arrive just behind your TALDs and have a swarm of HARMs and your jammers ready. On their own, they will not get through but if you support them like you would an aircraft they will.

This is the first of four scenarios where you will be dismantling the air defences of Iceland. It is always hard to kick in the door but successive waves over the next 2 days will get easier.

Technology divergence is really on display here. The F-111, although a great aircraft was out of date by 94, still useful but at a huge disadvantage. The F-117 on the other hand is the opposite, use it to your advantage. Same goes for the F-16 blk 50CJ vs the F-4G Wild Weasels, opposite ends of the technology spectrum in 94 so you need to pick and chose the tasks with that in mind. The Soviets have a very high end and in-depth IADs set up.

Enjoy.

B

GBU-15 are TV-guided, not laser guided, to allow them to fill this very role.

Thanks very much for everyone who helped me! With your helps and suggestions I finally shut down all of long range SAMs over the Iceland and close all the runway of Kef in 9th try. My F-111s are now doing there job and nothing can hurt them - they just fly over 36000ft at closest approach route, drop their bombs and go back to base without any threat. This scenario was the hardest one I've played in CMO, however that make me really happy when I successfully break their AA defense. Thanks for great scenario and kind help.

I'd have left the EF-111 at home for that one.

That's a lot going on! I'm not sure what pointers I have to offer, but try to keep your package in alignment with your EF-111. That means along the same axis, with the EF-111 behind and above, or in front and below. That forces them to look straight into the beam for maximum jamming effect.

quote:

For EC-130 jamming comms alignment isn't so important, but for jamming radars it is. It just depends on the target.

SA-20/10/12 are tough. One tactic you might consider is using something else to stimulate them (CALCM? decoys?) and stand off. When their tracking radars light up, they have to choose between shooting at the HARM, and shooting at the cruise missiles. Both will kill them. The important thing is that you get the tracking radar because that will disable to site.

5. After use all of HARM, I launched plotted ALCM from B-52(make them approach behind the mountain at southeast of Keflavik) however they are shot down.

Use HARM and CALCM in combination early to stand off. Then, as you start to make some holes, you can stand in. I think you'll find you use fewer of both missile types generally.
