Tolkien served in the WWI trenches.
He came down with a nasty bug that
required a hospital stay.

His unit was nearly wiped out during
fighting that occurred when he
was away.

So, he had a sound idea of what
war meant.

Later, when he heard about the first
use of the atomic bomb, this is what
he wrote in a letter to his son.

“The news today about 'Atomic bombs' is so horrifying one is stunned. The utter folly of these lunatic physicists to consent to do such work for war-purposes: calmly plotting the destruction of the world! Such explosives in men's hands, while their moral and intellectual status is declining, is about as useful as giving out firearms to all inmates of a gaol and then saying that you hope 'this will ensure peace'. But one good thing may arise out of it, I suppose, if the write-ups are not overheated: Japan ought to cave in. Well we're in God's hands. But He does not look kindly on Babel-builders.”

Tolkien, he gave us Dungeons and Dragons without knowing it, and World of Warcraft as well, because WoW would not be here with D&D.

Just about all of the fantasy literature of today, was given inspiration by Tolkien.

And he just wanted a place for the Elven language to exist :)

Very True, every game you play has orcs and dwarves and elves.

I remember when I went to see "The Fellowship of the Rings" with my gaming friends (who, as amazing as it sounds, never read Tolkien). When the part in the Mines of Moria started I said "Now you will see how Dungeons & Dragons was born..."

D&D 3E was really lucky to be published around the time Peter Jackson pushed out his trilogy.

WoW, however, in turn gave us that dreadful 4E, so it was not very grateful.

In The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Tolkien speculated that the description of the Dead Marshes may have been based on his personal experience in World War I, specifically, the Battle of the Somme. When it rained, blast craters in no-man's land would become a series of pools or lakes with bodies of dead soldiers, from both sides, floating in them.

There hasn't been a year since 3rd grade in 1976 that I haven't read some Tolkien, from full Lord of the Rings read throughs to chapters from Unfinished Tales or the Silmarillion.

I was in a dark place as a teenager, and it is fair to say that the LoTR pulled me through it.

And it got me into fantasy roleplaying, first with Tunnels and Trolls, then D&D.

Cheers
