So my 2 German UBoats just sank 6 merchants and 3 escorts in a single attack in the N.Atlantic on the 3rd turn of the game (1939 scenario). 1UBoat received 2 pts of damage. My opponent commented that was a lot of escorts sunk. I agree with him (although in another game I took 4 damage points to the same 1 UBoat (out of 2 in the fleet) in a 10 escort convoy zone with 1.091 and in a single turn (UBoat fleet attacked twice and same sub took 2 damage each time). It was also early in the BOA (early 1940).
I was unsure if there was something wrong with my game (on Steam).
Has anyone else had these kinds of losses early in the BOA on 1 turn?
Have any of you sunk 3 escorts with 1 wolfpack of 2 UBoats in 1939 scenario?

I have lost a lot of escorts, without much impact on the UBoats

I am not sure exactly how naval battles (including the BOA) works, but I suspect that it is lots of attacks with each attack having only a small chance of success. So it is kind of like rolling 4 dice for each sub and needing 5's or 6's on each die to hit. On average you will get 1.33 hits per sub. But there is also a 20% chance to get 0 hits and a 10% chance of getting 3 or more hits. So if you roll enough times you are going to have some turns where you do very poorly and other turns where you do very well. I have had a U-Boat in 1939 (doing 2 attack's in a turn) sunk by taking 3 hits and 2 hits in the same turn by escorts. I have also had a full strength U-boat sunk by 2 air attacks in one turn (see my AAR with MM). So the luck goes both ways.

Ahh... thanks Harrybanana, now I get it and believe you are right. It's just in most of my PBEM games, a UBoat in the fleet gets hit and quite a bit takes 2 damage points. I have had similar experiences as you with UBoats being sunk by 1940 British bombers (including in port while trying to repair... with max AA guns and no damage to bombers). This time I was playing as the Allies (like third time ever) and got to see the UBoat damage from that side.
I remember playing an Avalon Hill game called Victory In The Pacific where you moved ships (single counters for each) into sea zones and when attacking you rolled several dice seeking hits... you had to roll a 5 or 6 to hit (and had to specify a target), but Aircraft Carriers got a +1 bonus to dice roll. Lots of fun but was kind of like rolling a Yatzee or snake eyes in ASL... still I was a teenager and we played in the basement of a local hobby shop that sold games... good old days of 1977 or so.
I still think that there needs to be a dice roll adjustment that makes UBoats a little more scary to the Allies in 1939 and 1940 (half of 1941 maybe too)... but on the AAR's I have seen 7-10 merchants sunk per turn with little damage to the UBoats... but in the games I have going now, I see much more damage to UBoats (like how do you sink a bunkered UBoat in port??? Alliies tried it without any luck).
