Can fleets in ports within their interception and interdiction ranges do both?

It is December 39 and I have yet to sink one German sub. In the North Atlantic I had 10 escorts but the German subs still sunk 4 MM. I can't build any additional MM with the UK because the message comes up saying I don't have enough shipyards. I started building shipyards a few turns ago but they take a long time. Oddly enough I can build escorts.

With the new sub hunter rule I assume the 24 hexes is as the crow flies?

Finally the French get 5 oil a turn but spend 6 on maintenance. As I can't reduce the maintenance it appears none of their naval or air units will be able to participate in combat unless their oil and or maintenance numbers change before the Germans invade in 1940. Very odd.

Fleets in ports cannot intercept or interdict even if in range. They are docked. They can defend themselves if attacked.

Merchant ships require 10 shipyards while escorts only 1. The AAR discuss a lot of what you mentioned with regard to the BoA. There are large ranges of outcomes. From what I've read, the subs start taking the majority of their hits in 42,43 as Allies tech up.

With the sub hunter rule I'd say yes if I understand your meaning. I've included a pic, the sub hunter doesn't have to be on the same convoy lane but within 24 hex distance.

You can trade a small amount of oil from England to France to help them out. But more experience players may have better advice.

Hi,

MM and escorts do not require the same amount of shipyards (the requirement is in the build windows for the unit, it is one of the "costs"; IIRC escorts are only 1 shipward each). The shipward will be "in use" until the unit is finished. The UK has a Battleship in construction at start, it does use a lot of shipwards until mid (?) 1940.

Sinking a German sub (5 hits on a single sub) would be a mini-disaster for the poor German. It happens but it is relatively rare in 1939. From what I have seen up to now, those results seem relatively normal for 1939.

France does require some oil from the UK, and early on the UK can afford to lend it.

I am pretty sure I've seen advice to keep your Infantry on Rail as much as possible when possible (prior to spring 1940), as each unit costs 1/3 oil (which adds up fast). Also, move Air units by rail when changing their airbase. Finally, Fleets use a lot of oil both when they move and while at sea, therefore consider carefully before running them out of port. Anfd as said here, begin sending oil from Britain early... even 10 or 15 oil/turn adds up before the land battle starts in 1940.
