PBEM Global War: Narrative AAR.

PBEM Global War: Narrative AAR.

Introduction.

In responding to Jason's request for a game much to my great surprise and delight I reconnected with a hometown buddie of mine that I last spoke to almost 40-years ago. Our last contact was around 1982/1983 (can't remember the exact year) when I'd been out of graduate school and working for real for 2-years and he was heading into the Army.

Over summer breaks (for me) from college and in this 2-years post college and still single period (1976/77 - 1982/83) we, along with a couple of others buddies (Tommy & Blake), had many of exciting game. These not only included the Avalon Hill wargames shown below but no-hold barred games of risk, monopoly and life.

My most memorable plays were of course the wargames. Squad Leader, Cross of Iron, Russian Campaign, Victory in the Pacific, War at Sea, Richthofen's War, Wooden Ships and Iron Men, Midway and Third Reich. Now Jason and I didn't play all these combinations together but I did play them with him and/or the other two of our gaming crew. All our gaming took place at Tommy's house, which was next door to my mine (i.e., my parents), down the street from Blake's house and a short drive from Jason's. Unfortunately, Tommy is no longer with us as he passed around 10-years or so ago.

Jason and I are using WhatsApp to communicate, send screencaps and files back and forth to one another. So technically this isn't PBEM since we're not using email but practically it is.

This AAR will primarily be composed of the narrations and screen shots captured in our Chat. I will include screen caps from game files at various critical points through the narration and at the end of each turn. I call this a narrative AAR because we will only discuss strategy and decision well after the fact; i.e., well after the point in which such discussion could have any impact on the game or future decisions to be made.

This AAR is open to any and all, axis and allied sympathizers, with the understanding that it truly is an After Action Report (AAR) that is intended to capture what has happened and is not, will not, be used to influence strategies on either side.

P.S. And how could I forgot Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz and Arab-Israeli Wars! Don't believe I ever played any of these with Jason by did have numerous games with Tommy. We especially enjoyed Arab-Israeli Wars because at the time (late 70's / early 80's) the game represented state of the art/modern weapons. I used to love playing the Israelis and see my French Mirages and US TOW guides misses devastate several platoons of Soviet made tanks. We were playing this at the height of the cold war. Oh ... such youthful and fond memories. Well, not of the Cold War but of youth, gaming and such ...

Let's Talk Optional Rules.

12/27/20, 1:35 PM - [Axis] Just sent u an email with suggested rules.
12/27/20, 1:42 PM - [Allied] Looking at the optional rules. There's a few more I'd like to add. Will provide them is my order of "importance" then we can discuss.
12/27/20, 1:42 PM - [Axis] ok
12/27/20, 1:42 PM - [Allied] Of course, everything is negotiable.
12/27/20, 1:42 PM - [Axis] sure
12/27/20, 1:49 PM - [Allied] (1) Naval Rules: In the presence of the enemy
(2) Other Rules: Additional Chinese Cities
(3) Other Rules: Chinese attack weakness
(4) Other Rules: Off-city reinforcement
(5) Production Rules: Factory construction and destruction
(6) Air Rules: Internment
(7) Supply Rules: Isolated reorganization limits
(8) Additional Units: City based volunteers
(9) Naval Rules: Defensive shore bombardment
12/27/20, 1:51 PM - [Axis] I absolutely detest 1. I think 3 is too harsh on the Chinese. Ofhers are fine

Optional Rules (Final Version).

12/27/20, 1:53 PM - [Allied] If it's ok why don't we get 1 game started and through a turn or two before beginning the mirror game. What do you think?
12/27/20, 1:53 PM - [Axis] Ok
12/27/20, 1:53 PM - [Allied] Which side would you prefer for game 1?
12/27/20, 1:54 PM - [Axis] Axis please
12/27/20, 1:54 PM - [Allied] Copy that. I'll start the game then as the US is the first MP to set up.
12/27/20, 1:55 PM - [Axis] ok
12/27/20, 1:56 PM - [Allied] I'll also have more time when I get back. But that's the beauty of PBEM, the non-phasing player doesn't have to be present a lot of the time. :)
12/27/20, 1:56 PM - [Allied] Anyway, I'll get started.
12/27/20, 2:09 PM - [Allied] By the way, I forgot to ask about die rolling?
12/27/20, 2:09 PM - [Allied] Do you wish to use an external die rolling service?
12/27/20, 2:10 PM - [Axis] yes, unless u want to use Anydesk to view each other's screen
12/27/20, 2:10 PM - [Allied] Ok.
12/27/20, 2:11 PM - [Allied] Let's go with a service then.
12/27/20, 2:11 PM - [Axis] ok
12/27/20, 2:11 PM - [Axis] pbmroller Fine?
12/27/20, 2:12 PM - [Allied] I've got an account with PBE Games: Dice Roller https://www.pbegames.com/roller/
12/27/20, 2:12 PM - [Allied] Is that ok to use?
12/27/20, 2:12 PM - [Axis] sure

Setup.

12/27/20, 2:12 PM - [Allied] Ok. I need to roll for US entry chits.
12/27/20, 2:12 PM - [Axis] ok
12/27/20, 2:12 PM - [Allied] I'm placing all 3 in the German/Italy entry pool.
12/27/20, 2:12 PM - [Axis] ok
12/27/20, 2:26 PM - [Allied] Ok. Let me just have the server email the rolls. Let's see how that works. First roll coming up shortly.
12/27/20, 2:29 PM - [Allied] Did you get the email?
12/27/20, 2:29 PM - [Axis] yes
12/27/20, 2:31 PM - [Allied] Rolls produced chit draws of 2, 2, 4.
12/27/20, 2:33 PM - [Allied] Just noticed that supply units optional is also include. Hope that's ok?
12/27/20, 2:35 PM - [Axis] never played with those, will read up on them
12/27/20, 2:35 PM - [Allied] Honestly, I always play with them but never really use them.
12/27/20, 2:36 PM - [Allied] However, with isolated reorg now coded and being used they may become more important to have.
12/27/20, 2:36 PM - [Axis] ok
12/27/20, 2:43 PM - [Allied] Doesn't Italy follow the US setup?
12/27/20, 2:43 PM - [Axis] yes
12/27/20, 2:44 PM - [Allied] Ok. Wanted to make sure before I emailed the game file to you. Just end the US setup phase.
12/27/20, 2:45 PM - [Axis] roger
12/27/20, 2:49 PM - [Axis] Let me download that Wif version
12/27/20, 3:11 PM - [Axis] sorry, USSR comes after USA
12/27/20, 3:14 PM - [Allied] Ok. Didn't even think to ask which version you're running.
12/27/20, 3:15 PM - [Allied] I generally try to keep up with the latest public beta version.
12/27/20, 3:15 PM - [Allied] Which version are you currently running?
12/27/20, 3:15 PM - [Allied] Ok. Still some work for me to do then. USSR then.
12/27/20, 3:27 PM - [Allied] USSR setup finished. Game file sent. Headed out but should be able to finish allied setups when I get back later this evening.
12/27/20, 3:28 PM - [Axis] ok
12/27/20, 8:34 PM - [Allied] Finished with allied setups. Game file emailed.

Turn 1. Sep/Oct 1939. Axis #1. Port Strike.

12/28/20, 8:40 AM - [Allied] By the way. Polish when given the choice will choose the assault CRT. If losses aren't total I'll leave it to your best judgement to choose which Polish units are lost. If overrun and survives, Polish fleet units will rebase to Belfast.
12/28/20, 8:50 AM - [Axis] Generally I will send screenshots or messages of what's happening so that u can make decisions in real time. If u aren't available I will wait unless its obvious
12/28/20, 8:52 AM - [Allied] 👍
12/28/20, 8:53 AM - [Allied] Well not thumbs up on the surprise port strike. But what you posted earlier. 😀
12/28/20, 8:54 AM - [Axis] Understood
12/28/20, 8:54 AM - [Axis] Saving 3 to select first two targets
12/28/20, 8:56 AM - [Axis] Forgot screenshot, CP destroyed, flotilla damaged

Turn 1. Sep/Oct 1939. Axis #1. Land Combat.

12/28/20, 9:50 AM - [Axis] Just one roll in the Ichang attack
12/28/20, 9:52 AM - [Axis] Your choice of table in China
12/28/20, 9:59 AM - [Allied] Assault please.
12/28/20, 10:18 AM - [Axis] turn sent

Turn 1. Sep/Oct 1939. Allied #2. DOW & Actions.

12/28/20, 10:22 AM - [Allied] CW & France call out and place their reserves.
12/28/20, 10:30 AM - [Allied] Wow ... the allies got extremely lucky on US entry pool chits. Got 2 when Germany DOW Poland and lost none when CW & France DOW Germany.
12/28/20, 10:32 AM - [Axis] Hitler has sacked his ambassador to the USA
12/28/20, 10:32 AM - [Allied] That's a 2% occurrence for both events (i.e., 20% for 2-chits for German DOW on Poland & 10% of losing no chits for allied DOW on Germany). I can see why an external dice roller is nice for low probability events like this.
12/28/20, 10:33 AM - [Allied] Takes the heat off of the player who has the luck. 👍
12/28/20, 10:34 AM - [Allied] We know what it means when Stalin "sacks" someone. Not so severe, yet, when Adolf does it.
12/28/20, 10:36 AM - [Allied] Sep/Oct 1939. Allied #2. Actions.
France - naval
China - land
CW - naval
USA (neutral) - combine
USSR (neutral) - combine
12/28/20, 10:37 AM - [Axis] I like listing the actions, will do so from now on. May have to remind me
12/28/20, 10:39 AM - [Allied] Nice being retired. No work to worry about. 🤓
12/28/20, 10:40 AM - [Axis] Yea, I'm looking forward to that
12/28/20, 10:48 AM - [Allied] Sep/Oct 1939. Allied #2. Actions (REVISED).
France - land (REVISED)
China - land
CW - naval
USA (neutral) - combine
USSR (neutral) - combine
