I keep flying over a diesel sub at 300 MSL with a P3 Orion.
Why don't I pick it up with the MAD?

82m is still quite deep. MAD is not effective against deep submarines.

Might also be good to post a save just to make sure.

WAD.

Everyone in this forum who consistently asked for the changes to MAD modelling that made MAD sensors realistically less effective:

This is on you. Enlighten the good man here on why MAD is not an insta-find sensor.

Thanks

But for me its a never-find sensor.
What conditions must be met in order to use it effectively?

Low-level flight, for example. don't expect to find anything at 30 000 ft.

If liking math...https://www.researchgate.net/publication/292239873_Detection_Range_of_Airborne_Magnetometers_in_Magnetic_Anomaly_Detection (my advice is...do not get headache) :D

I notice how many modern ASW aircraft don't have MAD booms, instead relying on sonobuoys. I suppose the perceived benefit of having one is more than offset by using the weight for more fuel/payload, as well as modern subs being harder to detect.

I did some more testing and I have no problem finding a Los Angeles-class at 100m depth.
I can't however pick up a Type 209-1400-class at periscope depth.

Is it even possible to pick up a modern diesel with MAD in CMO?

As you're probably starting to realise, size is a major factor.

Little diesel boats with non-magnetic hulls in shallow water will be very hard to find, if not impossible, with MAD.

Shallow water also means tons of background magnetic radiation from "stuff" in the sea bottom (everything from natural metals in the soil all the way to wrecks and abandoned cars, bikes, general wastage etc.). The same exact sub will be much easier to pick out in deep water.
