Hi,

All advancements apply only to the units that are build with a path the same name as the advancement. So you can see in the build screen what units all advancements can apply to (or to put it another way, all units have to apply one of the advancement to them when build, at that will be the only advancement that unit will benefit from, unless you change its advancement latter).

In the really war, there were quite a few heavy bombers that were used for anti-sub patrols. To the point that "Bomber Harris" was quite mad as he thought it was a waste of resources, and wanted to use them all to bomb Germany instead. But it seems that Churchill (and latter the US) did not agree...

Thanks again and once again I found what I was looking for in the build screens of the air units. I finally saw the Detection and Electronics varieties of air units so finally see how D&E affects units.

Now that we have the Change Advancement feature we can change Carrier Ops carriers for Convoy Escort ones which are vastly superior for sub hunting and will make use of bombers moot. Looks like Carrier Ops carriers are the big fleet flattops while the C&E ones are your jeep carriers that escorted convoys and invasion fleets. For the UK player that really tilts the sub war his way now.

@ago1000 - Thanks for answer, did find the unit build menus more closely and saw where I can make them different flavors. I like the new Change Advancement feature that allows us to change British Carrier Ops carriers to Convoy & Escort carriers. The Carrier Ops ones model big fleet carriers while the C&E ones model the jeep carriers that escorted convoys and invasion fleets. Not too wild changing air units to the Naval Air variety as I use them a lot more for ground support.

You find the CA button on the bottom part of the unit info screen where you'd see the surface anti-sub air combat numbers but above where it shows what type of flavor a unit is like 1939 Interceptor for an air unit. Actually good that we can't change naval units, that would be a bit of a stretch.

Well why? They are just changing of mission. You are assigned convoy escorts for tracking enemy subs instead of carrier operations for tracking the enemy surface fleets.

No you can't with ships. If you were to allow it in the game, I'm wondering if that would mean the fleet would need to move into the building queue for maybe 2 turns (1 month) for the refitting? Just a thought.

If it is ever allowed to change ships advancement, yes I agree it should require some time spend in the queue for refitting as you extensively modify the ships instead of simply getting a different type of tanks (for armor advancements) through the normal replacements all units get regularly (for example). Might be a stretch with programing, but then again, planes can be put back on the queue, so probably feasible (not sure if wishful, but that is another debate).

However, some changes should still remain forbidden, for example one should not be able to switch from warship to heavy warship since they represent different ship generations (and also hull size I believe). Also changing ships advancements should probably cost more that 1 PP per step

Yeah better not allow ships to change advancement since they tend to be so very different. Did you know that changing advancement in ground and air units costs no ops points? Very generous, perhaps too generous as you'd think they'd take a two week turn to swap out.
