Question about Strike/Air Intercept mission.
Is it possible to plot A/C's course, altitude before A/C took off from the air base?

Thx

No, but yes.

This is not really a scenario. It is really just a test area.

Tiger #1 is a plane that has a strike mission setup PRIOR to take-off. Notice the various points. They aren't really for anything other than to give it a flight path.

This is NOT the Flight Planner. I tricked this into working using the same software that you have. LMK if you are interested in learning how to do it.

I'm interested in knowing how you did that.

It took lots of time playing around with it.

But, to cut to the chase, obviously you have to work through the Editor.

When you establish a strike, while playing through the editor, the planes will be readied and as soon as they are, a Flight Plan will be established.

Do this for every group that you want to launch for the whole game, if you are planning that much. They will all be set to go at the same time.

Don't let them take off. First, edit the paths that you desire. If you noticed, I changed altitude and speed for nothing more than a demonstration. As you can see, it worked.

As soon as they are all ready, don't let the scenario advance.

Now go and change the START time on the scenario.

You can also change the launch times (even delay them if you like) on your strikes.

Save the game, and then start it. You will have to watch it to make sure that it works properly. I have played around with this for months. It can be a bit tricky, but it can be done, as you can see. It makes the scenario much more interesting.

PM me if you have some other questions. I have done quite a bit of research on this.

Doug

Wow, Thank you DWReese,

I tried your scenario several times. For a long time I thought a flight plan will be generated after the A/C took off. Now I realized that the flight plan is established as soon as the A/C begin taxi to the runway. It is very interesting to find out that. I also noticed that the flight plan will not be available if you manually issue launch order. Got to wait for A/I to generate a flight plan and a launch order, it will take about one min.

Guess this trick will help scenario designer a lot.

I will dig into this further tomorrow. Just noticed that in Editor mode, it is possible to mix different loadout A/C into one group with this trick.

Thanks for your comments.

If you happen to own the scenario Broken Shield, please take a look at that. Load (but don't start) the game as the Syrian player, and then switch sides to the Israeli side. You will see that Israel has all kinds of aircraft (with their flight plans already mapped out) in one of the best strikes that I have ever seen. It is all coordinated, and could be done using the method that I described. I would love to see Gunner do that with his H-Hour scenario, but that is probably just wishful thinking. (That being said, I do believe that 'another method' may have been used to accomplish this, but I'm not going to get into that right now.)

In any case, you will see that the entire strike has been choreographed. It has been perfectly orchestrated, and it is a thing of beauty.

As you said, as a scenario designer, you can really make AI-controlled strikes something great.

My "scenario", if you can call it that, is really just an elementary attempt to see if I could do it and if so, how. Obviously, it can be done. <lol>

Yes, if NF series can apply this method that would be awesome.

on the other hand , it is a pity that Air Intercept mission won't benefit from this. H-Hour is one of the example on why a pre-planned course/altitude air intercept mission is welcomed . In this scenario there will be several groups of Soviet attack A/C strike Banak AFB , at the same time the Su-27s are sweeping this area at high altitude. I would like to set the 4 F-16 at Banak AFB into an air intercept mission. it will be triggered when target is closer than 40nm. I hope the F-16 will keep min altitude after take off, to avoid Su-27s and Mig-29's attention and welcome the Su-25 with aim-9. Unfortunately this is not possible with current air intercept mission editor system.

By the way, here is the screenshot that I can mix different loadout A/C into one group
A four-ship ROK F-16s are on the way to strike a DPRK's AFB
Leader armed with LGB, wingman armed with SEAD loadout, #3 carries CBU, #4 armed with AAW

As you have probably figured out, you can also assign OECM and Fighters as ESCORTS to the group, and they will also follow the same path as the strikers.

It's pretty awesome. I worked on perfecting it for a couple of months. It required lots of trial and error, but it does work.

As I said, I'd really love to see the H-Hour scenario be updated using this. Assigning strike aircraft to low-level entry attacks by setting the altitude makes them so much more dangerous.

I'm glad that you are having fun. Make some more scenarios, or add more to yours. Explore. It's like Christmas in July.

Realized why I never noticed this before, I usually manually launch mission aircraft rather then waiting for the AI to do it.

Used this method in Down Town, 1967 last night. Still resulted in my objectives being destroyed, but whether by luck or because I had my aircraft coming in off axis, I only lost 3 aircraft total. One A-6, One A-7, and a F-4B.

It's pretty cool when you can plan it, and have the AI for the computer side execute the attack rather than arbitrarily "hoping" that it gets it right.

I feel like this ought to be possible using the LUA mission export/import but every time I export a land strike mission, edit an altitude in the XML and re-import it I end up with a mission called "ERROR" in the mission editor

Sorry, but I can't help you with that. I don't know anything about Lua.
