If a ship is upgrading in a mod and the delay is say 200 days and the min sys damage 20 , does it have to repair the sys damage before the upgrade clock starts ticking?

Thanks Ian... OK so what is the point of sys damage with upgrades I was hoping it would make them more adapatable in terms of modding.

If the ship is damaged before upgrading, the damage is repaired first. Whenever the upgrade begins the Sys damage merely represents work needing to be done but doesn't actually quantify it and is superfluous. Just look at the days left, that's the only relevant measure. Keep in mind that sometimes pierside "repair" goes faster than shipyard, so you might toggle between those on occasion to make sure you're using the fastest method. Pretty sure I've had ships that had to go into shipyard repair to avoid the # next to the days left meaning that many days before no further repair possible, but after the ship was in shipyard repair mode for a time could be changed to pier side for a shorter period. Sometimes the pier side repair time would be equal to the shipyard repair time but it made more sense to switch to pier side at that point anyway.

I've also recently had examples of ships upgrading where they got down to 3 days left and just sat there at 3 days for several turns. The only way I was able to shake them loose was to increase the urgency from "normal" to a higher priority.

For short term upgrades, some damage will encourage you to do it in a larger size port. That's about it.
