Will loading an amphibious force HQ on any other ship than an AGC (like an APA) give any benefit at all (even reduced) in an amphibious invasion?

The Amphib Force HQ will give a benefit if it is on an AP or xAP, but not as much as on an AGC. I can't quantify the % difference in effectiveness. The AGC would have the extra radios and Operations charting room to coordinate the waves of landing craft and unloading from ships to landing craft. Probably also abstracts the presence of a Beach Master to get the supplies and equipment off the beach so that it does not block the next landing waves.

It has to be in the invasion hex. I tend to create a small amphibious TF with the Amphib Force HQ aboard an AGC escorted by a minesweeper and a few ASW/DD platforms. It goes to the invasion hex, set to Do Not Unload.

When loading the AGC will show red as if it doesn't have sufficient space for the HQ, but the entire unit will load.

Seeing the red indicator on the loading, I once put two AGCs in the same TF thinking I needed both to be able to load the entire LCU but the entire LCU loaded into one AGC leaving the other empty.

Sometimes you just have to experiment until you figure it out.
