Did the Germans want to try naval combat in the Baltic?

The game seems to be unravelling somewhat for the Germans here. I think the halfway house approach works if the Poles then oblige with a light defence. Not starting the convoys at sea was a risk that I'm now paying for. I don't think I have much choice but to do a combined to get the convoys to sea and then attack Belgium with scant forces.

Let me know what Italy and Japan are doing when you're ready and I'll get the turn started.

Game 2

As the English might say, "Steady the Buffs".

Agree Combined but I think we can hold off on Belgium this impulse. The turn will end soon so disorganisation is less of an issue. Even in the rain you can get a pretty good odds shot at Warsaw. Use the ART and Stuka to try and disorganise and your land movement to bring everything you can to the party. That INF Div will be a good loss taker after the ENG if it becomes necessary. It'll be about 4:1 with a 70% chance of 5:1. May as well try HQ support as well. If it comes off, Poland, Holland (apart from a slight annoyance in Rotterdam) and Denmark are a good first turn haul.

Italy will do a combined. Send out two subs, the 5-2 and the 4-2 with 5 combat factors to Cape St Vincent. I'll keep 1 in reserve for if the Allies send a CP to West Med and turn doesn't end. I'm surprised the Allies didn't put both units into Marseilles. If the HQ can reach, it's 5:1 +1, which I'll take any day.

Japan will do a land. Send the file back to me for this (plus the Italian land moves) as I haven't looked at the positions in detail but will try to get another attack in the south if the odds look reasonable.

The attack on Warsaw happens regardless of any Belgian shenanigans. The thinking with Belgium is that the mud probably stops France from optimising their defence. In addition delaying a turn won't help much in terms of number of German units in the west next turn (and so delaying for not much benefit). It's risky of course because the Allies could decide to take their chances and attack - but any failure there would help the German/Italian cause.

Game 2

Remaining German orders

Rail Movement:

5-5MOT Fredrikshaven to Saarbrucken

Land Movement:

(1) 9-4 INF and (2) 8-4 MOT to 51,33
(3) 105mm ART to 49,46
(4) 1-3 INF DIV to 51,45
(5) 6-4 INF to 49,45

Land Combat:

Warsaw using HQ support from von Leeb and ENG (with 6-4)
Liege Using Do-17M (which returns to Cologne) and makes this attack automatic.

The 8-6 MECH and the 8-4 MOT move into Liege
If I am lucky enough to take Warsaw without loss then the armour and engineer moves into the capital. If I take the capital with loss then instead of the armour then then the ART. If I lose two units then the INF DIV is obviously the second one.

Rebase:

Fighters in NW Germany to (1) Liege and (2) 51,33

Game 2

The Germans will do a land. I can get an auto on Brussels and will start moving units west by rail as the turn won't last long.

I can't spare any rail capacity this impulse but should be able to help next impulse if you need some German assistance in the Alps?

Just debating whether to bring that MECH back from Africa but perhaps not if Germany are sending some units down. Italy will be doing Combined so I can use the cover of the weather in the Med to bring theTRANS back anyway. Need to see whether there are any reasonable attacks in South China before deciding whether Japan does land or combined.

It might help to keep Wavell from moving to France. Depends if you think it can do some good in France. From a German perspective I'd say keep him where he is.

Yes, I came to the same conclusion. I've changed my mind about Italy doing a Combined. Too much land movement needed.

How about moving the 5-3 INF at Saarbruken to 54,33 to stop the French occupying it? If they wanted it then, they would have to risk a 1:1 Assault.

Yes, but the two Chinese units are OOS as well, so they can't do anything. The Chinese would have to bring the HQ across, which would suit me.

Blitz would have been fine. Slightly better chance of units surviving. I’ve gambled on assault hoping they roll low enough to disorganise them.

I am thinking of a combined with the CW but it depends what you need of them in Belgium. I need three moves in Poland. Let me know your thoughts on Belgium.

About the only thing you can do in Belgium is swap the two Belgium units around. They can get too good an attack on the MIL on its own. It's only staving things off to the end of the turn but every little delay helps. That would mean a land move to move in Poland as well.

France and China will be land moves, so nothing for me until land movement. I think the French will have to pull back and form a line along the Berne-Calais axis. Once the turn ends, the north flank will be open when the Belgium units disappear. If they won initiative, likely at +2, they can get 3 hexes on the hex with Paris MIL. I'll have to start thinning out the Maginot line forces.

The Germans will do a land. Nothing until Rail Movement. Let's discuss this when you come to it.

The best I can get for the CW is 7BP . We need to be sensible on how long we think the French will last i.e. so that we are not throwing good after bad - but at the same time not cutting the French off prematurely.

I am saving a little more oil than I want but that's because if I don't save it in place I can't reach factories. I have a few CP spare to improve the situation so long as there are no disasters.

Question: If I send resources (not build points) to France, presumably I save on the convoys points because the resources go straight to France and not via UK factories back to France - is that correct?

You are correct but it sort of depends on the French having enough factories still reachable to be able to process the resources. Toulouse and Nantes may be viable but if the French are down to those two, it wouldn't be worth it anyway.

How about a middle path? Don't send any more, apart from an oil. The French will hold off making an agreement this turn but will send what they can the turn after.

Edit: I may rethink this when I see what my options are for units are in production. Anything with too long a build time won't be worth laying down.

Sure, we have a little while to decide. I was think of keeping the oil and cutting the BP in half.

Need oil for reorganising. The supply in Syria is good when available but the Italians may interfere with that supply chain.
