This is, essentially the "You didn't build this" argument which was famously argued by Lizzie Warren and now we are rid of her (mostly)

A deliberately hilarious version of the argument.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/chicago-house-party-hosts-mom-is-first-responder-astounded-by-sons-behavior-reports/ar-BB13pNQC?li=BBnb7Kz

"While her 26-year-old son was hosting a wild house party in defiance of social distancing orders last Friday, a Chicago woman was working a 24-hour shift as a first responder because of the coronavirus outbreak, according to reports.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was horrified after police showed up at her door and showed her video of the party that went viral online, Chicago’s WMAQ-TV reported."

Testing ramping up everywhere. For the first time I've seen the DRC on this list.

Sorting for percentage positive the UK is starting to look slightly better, dropping 2 percentage points while testing numbers go up. Still at 19% which is quite high, though.

Brazil not looking good on this factor. Small sample sizes from Cameroon and the DRC, but those don't look good either.

Yes I have. I also worked for years around inner city criminal youth, after living in the inner city. For me to really talk about races in US we will have to move beyond the normal, and prerequisites are advantageous.

i.e.- live in downtown Memphis for a year.

Plus I don't do the:

Person A argument: "You need water to live."
Person B argument: "Water will kill you."

style of debate.

Coronavirus vaccine by January is 'doable,' Dr. Anthony Fauci says
Amid the race to find a vaccine, Fauci said the experimental drug remdesivir is "an important first step" in treating coronavirus patients now.

https://www.today.com/health/coronavirus-vaccine-january-doable-dr-anthony-fauci-says-t180358

""We want to go quickly, but we want to make sure it's safe and it's effective," Fauci said. "I think that is doable if things fall in the right place.

"Remember, go back in time, I was saying in January and February that it would be a year to 18 months (to develop a vaccine), so January is a year, so it isn't that much from what I had originally said."

. If you don't recognise the discriminatory history of the US in regard to black and brown Americans, the civil rights movement and the existing legacy of those institutions then it'll be hard to discuss this on the same plane.

Keyword: HISTORY as in ancient history.

Institutionalized Racism simply does not exist anymore.

Every Institution in the US has been providing special treatment to people of color and discriminating against non-people of color for somewhere around thirty years now in a misguided attempt to redress PAST discrimination.

There is no institution in the US today that could even dream of getting away with racist treatment of people of color.

That Institutionalized Racism exists in America today is a leftist fabrication.

Sooner or later you are going to have to step outside of that bubble you are living in.

Many of the people still alive today were alive, educated, and lived in a segregated society and unequal society. Their lives and possible opportunities were altered regardless of subsequent changes in law. This is recent history. Many working age Americans were raised by parents who suffered these inequalities. That legacy and the legacy of poverty linked to this past are still in the present and relate to healthcare among many other things.

Here is an exercise our school community engaged in to understand more about what experiences are different for people of racially different backgrounds. It's called a privilege walk.

-----------------------------

If your ancestors were forced to come to the USA not by choice, take one step back.

No step taken here.

If you were ever called names because of your race, class, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If there were people who worked for your family as servants, gardeners, nannies, etc. take one step forward.

No step here.

If you were ever ashamed or embarrassed of your clothes, house, car, etc. take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If one or both of your parents were "white collar" professionals: doctors, lawyers, etc. take one step forward.

No step taken here.

If you were raised in an area where there was prostitution, drug activity, etc., take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If you ever tried to change your appearance, mannerisms, or behavior to avoid being judged or ridiculed, take one step back.

Stepping back here. Every teenager on the planet qualifies for this one.

If you studied the culture of your ancestors in elementary school, take one step forward.

Half step forward here. No Arab culture studies in my schools.

If there were more than 50 books in your house when you grew up, take one step forward.

No step taken here. The only books in my house were the huge stacks I brought home each months from the mobile library.

If you were taken to art galleries or plays by your parents, take one step forward.

No step taken here.

If one of your parents was unemployed or laid off, not by choice, take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If you have health insurance take one step forward.

Stepping forward here.

If you attended private school or summer camp, take one step forward.

Stepping forward here as I guess Boy Scouts summer camp has to count.

If your family ever had to move because they could not afford the rent, take one step back.

No step taken here.

If you were ever discouraged from academics or jobs because of race, class, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation, take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If you were encouraged to attend college by your parents, take one step forward.

No step taken here.

If you were raised in a single parent household, take one step back.

No step taken here.

If your family owned the house where you grew up, take one step forward.

Half step here...family only 'owned' house after I spent 20 years paying off the mortgage.

If you saw members of your race, ethnic group, gender or sexual orientation portrayed on television in degrading roles, take one step back.

Stepping back here. Whites are constantly portrayed in degrading roles.

If you were ever offered a good job because of your association with a friend or family member, take one step forward.

Stepping forward here. personal recommendations are the only kind to have.

If you were ever accused of cheating or lying because of your race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If you ever inherited money or property, take one step forward.

Inherited the house I grew up in after paying my parents mortgage for 20 year so I guess I have to step forward.

If you had to rely primarily on public transportation, take one step back.

For how long? Stepping back and forward here. Extremely stupid question.

If you attended private school at any point in your life take one step forward.

No step taken here.

If you were ever stopped or questioned by the police because of your race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation, take one step back.

No step taken here.

If you were ever afraid of violence because of your race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation, take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If you were generally able to avoid places that were dangerous, take one step forward.

No step taken here.

If you were ever uncomfortable about a joke related to your race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation but felt unsafe to confront the situation, take one step back.

Another stupid question. Some people have sufficient backbone to fear nothing. Doesn't mean I have never been denigrated jokingly. No step taken here.

If you were ever the victim of violence related to your race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation, take one step back.

Stepping back here.

If your parents did not grow up in the United States, take one step back.

No step taken here. Only my Lebonese immigrant maternal grand parents didn't grow up here.

If your parents attended college take one step forward.

No step taken here.

If your parents told you that you could be anything you wanted to be, take one step forward.

Stepping forward here. I had good parents thank you very much.

I'll be happy to take your test as I can and will answer in the same way that you expect many people of color to respond.

Many of the perceived prejudices evident in the questions apply just as strongly to poor white folks (I'm only half white, with the other half being camel jockey) as they do to oppressed people of color.

So, how did I do? Do I qualify as oppressed and discriminated against?

It's not a test. It's a reflective exercise.

So how did you do?

Danny Thomas who helped start St. Jude was Lebanese American, an Arab American. I think that would count as Caucasian, of the three major groupings.

How about: Were you ever fired so your employer could hire someone who fit one of these criteria as in woman, minority, and so on? Or other wise discriminated against for those same reasons? Do you count that as a nightmare?

Somebody said that "I have a dream." It turned into a nightmare.

There are plenty of poor people in the US who are not black or brown. I brought up some points earlier that should be investigated. You never responded to that.

That is undisputed. I understand US history. But what do you mean "nightmare?" Civil Rights, equality by law and practice has led to a nightmare?

Poor whites will also suffer, clearly. What I'm saying is that many black and brown Americans are in an underprivileged position due to historical policies and practices and some of that seems to be presenting itself in relation to this pandemic.

More, as you say, will have to be learned about how much is blood type, genetics, diet or other factors, in addition to access to good healthcare.

quote:

Many of those hospitals in trouble are the smaller ones in rural areas. Those had to cut costs before, then the government came along and cut Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements to those hospitals. It costs more to treat some of those patients than is received. I don't know what you know about business, but that only works in Socialist/Communist business models.

Actually, no. Many countries have nationalised healthcare and treat all people regardless of income.

It's possible.

quote:

The drug costs are high because it can cost one billion US Dollars to bring a drug to market. Other countries limit how much that can be charged for the drug but not the US government although there are some programs that buy in large amounts for less.

Not to mention malpractice costs. Since the US has a system where the loser does not pay the winners legal fees (at least usually) it is cheaper to settle than it is to go to court. After all, it will cost so much whether you win or lose so you might as well settle - at least for any insurance company. That is called greenmail. Same thing for organizations who want money, especially those like the Westboro so called "Baptist Church."

I brought up insulin for a reason. It's cheap, was developed in the 1920s, and was pretty cheap then.

This is from the Mayo clinic.

https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(19)31008-0/fulltext

One vial of Humalog (insulin lispro), which used to cost $21 in 1999, costs $332 in 2019, reflecting a price increase of more than 1000%.10, 11, 12 In contrast, insulin prices in other developed countries, including neighboring Canada, have stayed the same.

Insulin pricing in the United States is the consequence of the exact opposite of a free market: extended monopoly on a lifesaving product in which prices can be increased at will, taking advantage of regulatory and legal restrictions on market entry and importation.

Third, the arguments that high costs are needed for continued innovation and that attempts to lower or regulate the prices will hamper innovation are not a valid excuse.13 There is limited innovation when it comes to insulin; the more pressing need is affordability.

I know someone who gets insulin, medicines, and all diabetic testing supplies free. It just takes a telephone call. How expensive is that? That is not through an insurance program either.

Ditto Tennessee, but not (to this point) Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas and Colorado.

Have Tenn. and Miss. done something notably different than other states easing countermeasures? I'm not aware of anything, and a quick Google search didn't turn up anything.

Here in Mississippi we have gone from “Safe at Home” to “Safer at Home”. We are semi-reopened. Still limited to no gathering larger than 10. Retail establishments except places like salons, massage parlors, nail salons, can operate up to 50% occupancy. Still no dine-in eating and bars are closed. Elective surgeries have restarted thankfully as well. That expires on May 11, and I expect continued improvement for the latter half of May.

Spike in US deaths and cases flagged as pneumonia suggests even greater COVID-19 impact
30Ap20

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2020/04/29/far-greater-u-s-covid-19-death-toll-indicated-cdc-data/3048381001/

"Federal data released this week shows that the number of deaths recorded in the U.S. this year is higher than normal, outpacing deaths attributed to COVID-19 in states that have been hit hardest by the virus.

The data provides the first look at death trends this year across the country and offers more evidence that the official tally of coronavirus deaths is low."

"For example, some doctors speculate people might be dying from illnesses from which they would normally recover because the pandemic has changed access to health care."

"In New York, deaths attributed to pneumonia are up 651% for March 22 through April 11. Those counts are up 670% in New Jersey and 172% in Michigan. The three states reported 7,430 pneumonia deaths above the typical 1,419.

Since February, more than 32,000 death certificates list COVID-19 as a cause of death, according to the NCHS.

Another 60,000 death certificates listed pneumonia as the cause of death but did not specify which pathogen triggered the condition.

There also were 14,000 that listed COVID-19 as the cause of pneumonia and 5,700 that named influenza with pneumonia or coronavirus."

I wonder how much they paid to be put there. Or if Google decided that they needed to do that on their own.

I've spent the better part of an hour trying for the right way of saying I disagree with a number of posts today from both ends of the political spectrum. I haven't solved the Gordian knot and have erased every effort thus far. Suffice to say race shouldn't play a part in how we look at every single thing, always dividing rather than bringing together. We Americans are sharply divided on many issues, and with cause, but all parties of good faith are welcome at the table of discussion. None should be asked to leave.

I've had so many black and Latino gang members (and independents) come up and tell me "I love you Mr.---." I have lost count. The majority done in private and all from the heart.

But truth is the truth.

We are going to get limited insights into the reality of racism in America from a demographic that is predominantly made up of older white, male and middle class.

Amusingly enough, that tends to be the exact same demographic that has the least exposure to racism and discrimination.

What a surprise, looking at some of the contributions

I have and have had many black and brown friends as well as black and brown brothers.

that said, back to the corona virus:

Deadly toll grows at Minnesota's New Hope nursing home, with 47 dead and 130 sickened by coronavirus
Families said they were kept in the dark about the deadly magnitude of the outbreak.
By Chris Serres Star Tribune
April 30, 2020

quote:

Amid growing public concern, officials at the 258-bed facility have begun to disclose more details about the devastating toll of the outbreak — the deadliest in Minnesota since the pandemic began. In a statement, St. Therese’s top executive said 47 residents have died from COVID-19 and another 130 residents have tested positive for the illness since the facility began testing in late March, when tests became available. About one-third of those with the disease were asymptomatic, meaning they had no symptoms when they were tested.

Barbara Rode, president and chief executive of St. Therese, said in a statement that the coronavirus outbreak “has been devastating to a community that prides itself on providing quality, loving care.”

The mounting death toll at St. Therese underscores the harrowing scale of the crisis facing Minnesota’s long-term care providers during the pandemic, as well as the challenges of keeping residents and families informed. Of the 343 deaths statewide from the virus, 271 have been in long-term care facilities such as St. Therese, where seniors live in proximity and often have underlying health problems.

If we manage to get even limited insight, that'll still be immeasurably more than we'll get from a select few.

Minnesota business owner: Virus lockdown will cost me my business and life savings in 30 days

quote:

A Minnesota business owner lashed out at the government’s mandated coronavirus stay-at-home order, saying that the measures will cost him his life savings and his business.

“I’m here because unless the governor lifts the stay-at-home order, in another 30 days, I’m out of business,” resort owner Bob Barton told Breitbart News during a “Liberate Minnesota” protest in St. Paul. “I lose my home because we have a three-month season in which we make our living, and [Walz is] already talking about truncating it by a month now. Me and hundreds of other resorts will go out of business this year.”

Barton added that the number of resorts has declined over the past few decades and that tourism is a crucial part of the businesses that he relies on to get by.

“In this state, 30 years ago, there were over 2,500 resorts. We’re down to a hair over 800," he said. “I would think that we’re going to lose half of those this year, and northern Minnesota is all tourism-based. We’re all interrelated, whether it’s a resort or a bait store or a hardware store or a grocery store or a gas station, you name it — when one sector goes down, we all go down.”

Man, that's sad. So many stories like this - New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington. Definitely the most vulnerable group.

My wife and I and our sons visited my 90-year-old mother at an assisted living facility this evening. They brought her to the doorway, and we stood about eight feet away. That's our first personal visit in about seven weeks. She has great long-term memory but doesn't understand why we can't hug her. The staff at the home has done a great job. But right down the road, another elderly home has lost five or six patients.

that said, back to the corona virus:

I admit that I am a racist. No matter what my kittens think, I believe that the HUMAN race has priority over all other races. No matter that I wake up during the night to tap my kidneys, I will NOT open up a container of moist food for them.

Well, from that standpoint, I admit I'm not a cat person. I tolerate them, because wife and youngest son love them. But a good dog is so much more preferable, in my very personal opinion that is not meant as a suggestion that any other person's way of doing things is right or wrong. (Geez, we need to qualify everything to mollify the perpetually offended.)

What do nursing homes, veteran's homes and indigenous Amazonian tribes have in common?
