That combat near Palapo took place in a hex that appears to be Jungle Rough - lots of places for his troops to hide. Hope you have some infantry to dig him out ...

Armoured vehicles in that kind of terrain are meat to infantry with an anti-tank capability. Even if it is just a Molotov cocktail. Plus the M-10s TDs have an open top to receive those and grenades.

Yes for some reason, when planning for Celebes invasion, I got overexcited about tanks and ended up sending ~6 between tanks and tank destroyers. These naval guards are small fry, so let them walk to Donggala; I have bigger problems to deal with. tanks will go back to guarding Palopo

and the biggest of problems is supply, Celebes is still outside the Allies defensive umbrella, and therefore I have to rely on submarines or aircraft. I will have to put more and more submarines to transport duty; at least until the carriers are back to business

Lautem captured by paras, which means another supply problem; but in this case, I will send the freighters even if it means forcing a battle. There are several cruisers, recently upgraded to 40mm AA guns, on the way

After Lautem, Dili, which will become a proper airbase, then I have air cover for Koepang

Watampone finished a level 1 airfield, and therefore there is going to be CAP available on the Celebes

not a lot more to report, other than there is this nasty TF coming to bombard somewhere

If I have to guess, it was directed to Lautem, but he will send it to Watampone instead

October 31.42

He didn't divert his bombardment fleet, which visited Lautem, for some minimal loss. The base was recently captured by paras, therefore kind of empty

He also decided to bombard Manado, but he first destroyed a small xAK convoy, then loss a destroyer to mines. I am not yet finished reinforcing Manado, I need lots of mines, an AGP, then some some coastal batteries; will probably be ready on mid november, then I will send the heavies

Why do all good things come to an end?

Palembang fortress has reached terminal status, I still hold it, but it is now a matter of hours before it falls. Still it was a good run. Also, as you can see, there are engineers at the base, and I hope they burn the oil wells before surrendering

in better news, landings at Lautem going as planned

the obvious counter should be to send carriers at long range (outside Ambon's range), to massacre my fleet... I hope he doesn't do it.. I had no choice than risking it, because I need Dili

I took the picture before sending squadrons to Moa and Damar.. each is now a level 1 airfield, with 25 P-40s to do LRCAP over Lautem

Thanks Lowpe!!, lets see how this ends, he decided to give some rest to his Palembang troops. I regrettably can't because I run out of supply and therefore disruption won't go down

In other news, what was obvious happened, he send the carriers to interdict my Lautem invasion. He probably didn't expect LRCAP, but in any case they did very little to stop the raid, some Zeros shot down, but that is it.
What was surpring:
- he didn't use torpedoes, why? EDIT: actually he used torpedoes for some, not all Kates, just poor aim, I guess
- he launched from a Lomblem, which is a base, which means penalty to strike size.. I told him some weeks ago about the penalty, so maybe a mistake?

in any case, great results, only 3 bombs hit CA Australia, and these were defeated by armor. Also, I was lucky there was only one (PM) strike

Palembang couldn't hold anymore, and it is not in Japanese hands, I haven't seen a lot of damage to oil wells, but I will confirm next turn. The survivors are now moving to Djambi for a final banzai charge against that base. but most likely they will be intercepted and destroyed before moving far

In other news, the battle for Endeh (Flores) started, Japan is overwhelmingly stronger in LCUs, but I have a slight advantage in terms of airpower, as the heavies, based on Darwin, started bombing and raising disruption levels. The plan is to delay for as long as possible

Palembang couldn't hold anymore, and it is not in Japanese hands,

now? darn autocorrect I bet. I can never do a graphic without at least one mistake.

Well, you have a war on your hands now! Japan has interior lines and it is still very early -- look out! But most importantly have fun.

yes, lol, I meant "now"
he can now redeploy 7 divisions
he can disembark half of them in Makassar, and recapture the Celebes (except Manado)
and he has carrier superiority, at least I know it will take him some time to embark them, as it is a level 4 port, and I bet he doesn't have (yet) lots of naval support.. it is going to be a fun slugfest until the Essex start arriving

the idea would be the same of what I want to achieve at Endeh, make every recapture costly

November 6.42
Big naval battles at Dili, and I believe "Pawn stars" would approve the trade; using my patented and tested method of how to destroy the IJN in 42; I set 4 SCTF to fight the big one he parked at Dili; the typical outcome is that the 1st gets heavily mauled, the 2nd somehow fights it into a slugfest, and the 3rd or 4th finishes the deal

3 of my 4 TFs found the enemy and the results were a tie:

- BB Idaho in terminal status, will sink next turn
- BB Yamashiro most likely sank, it left battle at heavy fires, heavy damage, then disappeared, and air losses reports 2 Pete FPs as ground losses EDIT: on Dec7th Yamashiro confirmed as sunk
- BB Hyuga left battle at fires, heavy damage status, will need some yard time
- CA Exeter + 4 destroyers lost, CA Australia at high risk
- At least 2 or 3 Japanese DDs should also sink

Other news: Saumlaki invaded

+1, I am big proponent of multiple small task forces.

Did you have your low number task forces set to low threat? They should go in skirmish a bit and retreat.

Your high number task forces are your sluggers. Assuming roughly equal distances of course and that you want to slug it out and not just launch torpedoes and run away. The highest number task force could be another torpedo run set to low threat to finish off damaged ships even if it is just 2-3 destroyers.

You did a great job avoiding torpedoes.

I didn't, I tend to prefer all TFs at high tolerance, high aggression commanders, "do or die"

reason is I really want to have all the odds in favor of at least some Japanese ships sinking. Fighting in 42 means 3-to-1 or even 4-to-1 ratio of losses, and I really dislike the idea of 2-0 or 3-0 loss ratio (with 2 or 3 Allied ships sunk for one heavily damaged ship that will get repair to fight again). I prefer a 5-to-1 if that guarantees the sinking

And yes, it is better that the bigger TFs get second or third. In this battle ship speed (old BBs much slower) was a good predictor on who was coming to fight 1st, but there is a lot of unknowns, as in this battle one of the 4 TFs didn't fight at all, they could had easily missed and then the scenario would had been different

Finally, the TFs ship compositions was totally random, this is how they came from Sydney or Townsville based on how ships ended their refits or repairs. I was expecting to sort out the TFs at Darwin, but I couldn't due to the emergency

Interesting.

I wonder how well my IJN fleet structuring would do against yours?

How badly damaged is Palembang? Can you start bombing the oil yet?

At least the invasion bonus is over.

That is still a lot of supplies needed. It is also a lot of oil and fuel that he did not receive for months.

Do you still have Cocos Islands and Christmas (IO) island?

Yes, it's obvious Jorge's opponent will experience economic collapse due to fuel shortage. With Palembang JUST falling and other factors, I think I figured he's 3 mil short already. Maybe your opponent doesn't quite realize this yet, because he's still living on the At-Start fuel stockpile, but he's been running a deficit now all game. At some point within 6 months or so, he's start getting the dreaded RED X on all his HI.

This game will not make it into 1944.

Disagree. The oil shortage will start to impact him in 1944 though. He will be able to fight full strength till 1944 easily. I have been here and worse. Sadly.

I think the oil shortage will start getting an impact late 43 at the earliest, this because he lost the KB and significant # of naval assets in 42, including like 6 battleships; also because his empire didn't extend farther than historical conquest. Without needing to resupply long distance forward bases, and with fewer gas guzzlers to feed, he might be in a better position than the typical player

Big incognito is his ship and aircraft acceleration programs, he did accelerate the liner conversion carriers and I have seen Yamato; on the air he has plentiful planes, regardless of losses and enough A6M5s to equip his carrier squadrons, but A6M2 can still be seen at land, same for Ki-43s, I haven't felt swarmed by Ki-44s. And I haven't encounter anything too advanced like A6M8. This tells me he is mass building current models and he is accelerating, but not pushing to the limits of WIPAE engine

Nov7.42: Bofors fire testing - 7/16/2020 6:06:14 PM

November 7.42
naval battles continued, with the Allied cruisers defeating a Japanese cruiser TF. CL Natori most likely sank EDIT: sinking confirmed on Dec10.42, as it ended battle at heavy fires/ heavy damage state and one float plane was reported on ground losses. DD Natsugumo also sank

This battle left the cruisers at Dili, within range of Japanese carrier strike. But it was a good thing I updated them all to Bofors last October, because they manage to dodge or destroy several enemy aircraft. At the end, only one cruiser (CA Chester), one DD (DD McCall) and one small xAKL were hit and are at risk of sinking

In other news, Endeh resisted another attack; enemy remains under high disruption due to heavy bombing; they couldn't even manage to reduce forts
