I see no failure of production there. Every functioning well pumped the normal 10 points of oil.
Are you talking about the damaged wells and how they got that way? You would have to go back a turn or two to look at enemy attacks or your attack that took Palembang.

If there is an enemy unit at Palembang, the oil will not produce ( nor will resources )

Remember, when an enemy force is in the hex, there is no production of resources or oil.

I will write an update tomorrow or sunday, but suffice to say not a lot happening ATM

still horrendous bombing and bombardments at Palembang fortress

what I didn't know was the tremendous effect it has on oil, fuel and supply:

so basically Palembang run out of oil

Of course! he invaded the hex many turns ago, that is why oil stopped

and I would guess fuel is getting wasted due to a mix of spoilage and bombardment

what is clear is that at this rate of depletion, I will run out of supply by the end of October; which means Palembang will fall early to mid November

surprise to see I still get resources... but that is kind of irrelevant

You are probably getting resources from other bases.

October 10.42 the 2nd phase of Operation Alligator, the liberation of the eastern DEI has started, with the naval bombardment of Kendari

the plan is a straight forward naval invasion of Watampone, followed by a minor diversion against Kolaka

I have committed all the fleet carriers, 4 BBs, 1 CVE + several cruisers and destroyers
Amphibious TFs are composed, almost exclusively, of AKs and APs; I hope they will survive, as I don't have too many left

Enemy disposition is unknown, except for the fact there are torpedo carrying LBAs at Makassar

1st day bombardment went ok, if underwhelming. LBAs missed completely

You still hold that small Dutch airstrip inland from Balikpapan. If you get established on Celebes, you can fly supplies and a base for there....providing LB fighter cover for a move on Balikpapan!

Not that it matters, this game is way over anyway...your opponent will surrender when he runs out of gas

EDIT: Or even better, just land at Donggla and build that up. So many choices!

Yes!
that is Melak, the DEI national redoubt!

From turn one I had it at 3,000+ supplies required, so that it start building supply reserves, drawing from Balikpapan. Once Balikpapan (and the entire DEI) fell, it become the last refuge of all dispersed Borneo LCUs

It still have a decent 1,800 points of supply,

Its main use was as a PBY-5A base during the early conquest of the eastern DEI. It's naval search capability over those critical seas was of tremendous value. Without it I would had no more than 14 to 16 hexes from Darwin or Kaimana, not enough to cover Soerabaja approaches. Eventually, after 15 to 20 turns , he figured it out and started bombing, so I moved the Cats to much better protected Manado, and still close enough

When the time comes, I will use it for CAP, I am seriously thinking I should capture, not bomb the oil at Tarakan and Balikpapan; having a gas station so close to the front can be very advantageous

I am not too interested in Donggala; because the port is on the west side, too close to trouble; I am aiming for Madjene

The Allied armada got into LBA range, and it was attacked by 3 waves of enemy combined Army/ Navy strikes

the 1st and 2nd waves were destroyed by CAP, it was composed by Betties and Kates

the 3rd wave brought Nicks, and it was the most numerous, thus around 16 Nicks attacked the ships, but all were misses due to AA or poor aim

Tomorrow the invasions will start with a late morning assault at Watampone; I am not expecting enemy at the beaches
Looks like there is going to be strong LBA opposition and there is a TF located at Makassar... would it try to intercept?

Pretty sure Donggla is on the bay side of Celebes, where the text is. You can verify by putting it as destination for any TF and see which side it routes to.

I doubt it is strongly held. It might even be vacant. Worth a recon by a seaplane - a cruiser FP would do.

Edit - Just noticed it still has a Dutch flag on it - no recon needed, just send some troops there even if they are not prepped.

can be a Da-babes/ extended map thing, but it is in the west

Madjene is 6 hexes from Balikpapan, and it is 0(6) vs 0(4) Donggala

so for me it makes more sense to build Madjene

That said, once I have Watampone, Madjene I might send something with APDs and small ships

Unlucky turn, very unlucky turn

Summary:
His surface TFs passed through 1 battleship and 2 cruiser TFs and went directly to the carriers, then invasion fleets
Only afterwards, those imbeciles of the battleship division managed to find the Japanese
then at the air phase, no CAP support therefore the LBAs had a field day

end result:
- CV Wasp, 1 DD, 2 APs, 1 xAP, 1 DMS sunk
- several others damaged, I just don't feel like counting

Next turn decision: CHAARGEE
Battleships will bombard Makassar, and stay on target; to act as torpedo magnets
Invasion fleets will proceed to their target
British CVs to cover
Lexington and Copahee will withdraw
heavies rebased to risky Manado; they will crater Makassar

Make sure that your surface TF are numbered lower than your Carrier TFs.

Another horrendous turn

I was kind of expecting it... the enemy carriers appear, and they sank CV illustrious and damaged CV Hermes, plus other ships.

I am not too concerned about Illustrious, as it was flagged for withdrawal in less than 100 days, but the bigger problem is that Japan has regained aircraft carrier supremacy for at least 3 months, then superiority until the arrival of Essex
therefore strategy will need to shift back to defense

That said, I plan to keep the Celebes, even if that means losing the entire fleet

I wouldn't sweat it; you're so far ahead that pausing operations isn't going to hurt. You're deep in the SRA as it is. And I agree, sacrifice what you can to keep Celebes, because you're going to win if you do that regardless of naval losses.

This just got interesting!

You're opponent just got a long overdue morale boost. That's not a bad thing in a PBEM!

You still going for Watampone or consolidating current gains? You're in good position for a bit of attritional warfare right now....even without a carrier edge, you can really wear him down in the air and at sea if he tries to counter attack.

That said, I plan to keep the Celebes, even if that means losing the entire fleet

I would counsel caution, as it is still Oct of 1942, Japan has interior lines and will eventually clean up Palembang, has local shipyards and the IJN surface fleet still has advantages over the Allies.

Still, having said that you are forcing him to react to you and that will have negative impact elsewhere for Japan. You can afford huge losses especially if you get trades.

Japan will have supplies and fuel to reach 1944 without it impacting his economy during that time frame.

I sent all SCTFs to try to hunt for the enemy carriers, that is where the comment on "losing the fleet" came from .. I was expecting a slaughter. instead he sent the carriers to Balikpapan, probably to refuel after running at full speed, most likely

In the meantime the invasion fleets were able to unload almost unopposed; as you can see I have too many troops now at Watampone to think about retreat; instead I will use the tanks to grab Palopo, Parepare and Madjene while the infantry division guards Watampone. After consolidation I will lay siege to Makassar

Tomorrow is a holiday here in Canada, I will use the time to rework the game

As of October 14.42

and with CVs Lexington and Hermes still at sea/ still at risk

Obviously there is FOW and optimism in the Japanese #s

Japan has the 2 liner conversion CVs (Junyos) + Zuiho + ? CVEs? active

Allies only CVs Hermes and Lexington, both damaged + 2 CVEs, one heavily damaged

Japan has to speed the building of his next class Unryu class of carriers and the single Taiho. If the Lexington is the last of your original American 6 fleet carriers and is damaged, you are right were the Americans found themself and they sped the building of 6 CVLs and Bogue and Sagamon class CVEs to fill the gap until the Essex class started slipping down the ways.

Yes, assuming no torpedo surprises, in 2 months I will have:

Bogue CVEs Altamaha, Prince William, Nassau + Copahee finishing repairs
Sangamon CVEs: Chenango, Suwannee, Sangamon
Lexington finishing repairs, Hermes still out of action

Add another month for redeployment and by mid to late January I could be back on the offensive

That said, I plan to keep invading, it is just that the objectives now are going to be less ambitious. I need more bases in range to the Celebes, and there are some targets in the Flores/ Timor area that won't require a carrier TF

Oct 16.42: Tarakan's oil and mini invasions - 7/3/2020 11:56:37 AM

October 16.42

A perfectly executed mission for the heavies; they "veni-vidi-vici" at Tarakan; one attack, minor losses and the oil is no more; and they are back to the safety of Darwin, far away from naval bombardment

The other news is the beginning of the mini invasions; I need aircraft to defend the Celebes, but since I won't have carriers for at least 3 to 4 months, I have to build airfields, ideally close. That means I need to invade, not bypass, Flores and Timor

These mini invasions will be risky, and I have budgeted heavy losses in xAPs and xAKs; and likely also attrition for transport planes. The good news is that most bases should be empty/ easily grabbed, and those that are not are probably low on supply. Also that the idea is to I just need some sort of low level (1 or 2) airfields, nothing fancy, just many of them, so resupplying shouldn't be too much of an issue

So far:
- Moa and Damar building already
- Taberfane invaded
- Tockanbesi-eilanden landing opposed by Vals, heavy ship losses, but the construction battalions are already building

- 2 more coming soon

Other news:
- returning fleets bombarded Dili and Koepang
- A6M5s.. I just realized he is fielding them
- he kept bombing Watampone, nothing I can do for the moment about it
- enemy carriers at Tarakan, they were unable to stop the heavies going for the oil wells

October 18.42

so another bad turn; CV Lexington hit by a torpedo, and although it is not at risk of sinking, it will take a lot longer to fix, as it will need to go all the way to PH. Before the torpedo hit, float damage was at 6 major, which was kind of acceptable for operations (15 major is not). Only good news is that it will reach Townsville next turn. Townsville is a L7 port with more than 300 naval support (+ more on the way)

Other news:
- Japan slaughtered the convoy at Waingapoe; but that was expected; what is important is that it was captured; same goes for Endeh. In due time I will have small airfields for CAP there

- Palembang assaulted; fort reduced to L2, 9700 Japanese troops killed

Last turn, I saw a bombardment fleet moving to Manado, therefore I got 2 TFs of torpedo boats ready for them

no hits, but at least it seems it ruined their bombardment run; as they left after 2 battles

other news: Dobo captured

October 27.42
A few, well deserved break for the Allied navies; most of the ships involved in operations during September and October's fateful months are now getting repaired or refitted. Several heavy cruisers, those upgraded in early October, are now moving to Darwin to replace them
t
That doesn't mean nothing have happened; as you can see from this map, there had been several invasions on the Timor and Banda seas, so far Japan has only reacted with a counter invasion at Ruteng. I am happy the Celebes are not (yet) counter invaded. He could easily land a few divisions at Makassar and take Watampone back, as I am not in a position (yet) to counter it (no carriers, no airfields)

Then the Japanese carriers appeared, in what looks like a raiding strike, he sent them near Broome. They surprised a TF of small xAKLs that were moving cargo from Perth to Darwin; not too much of a deal, as the main flow of people and material goes from the other direction; from Townsville

October 28.42
naval battle at Dili, which I am surprised ended without Allied ships sunk and Japanese going home. This is good news, it is also good because my opponent might think I wanted to fight, it was not the case, just an aggressive commander (Scott) seeking redemption from his poor performance 2 weeks ago

Naval landings at Lauterm will go on in two or three turns; paras will drop next turn

This is the Celebes as of end of October; notice a failed attack near Palopo... I thought tanks (or tank destroyers) would massacre his naval guards, I was wrong
