FYI, there is an AAR from runnersan, but alas, it is in Polish on a Polish strategy site...

thanks for the note

and thanks god I can't read Polish; I drink and it could be tempting, lol joking

I told him like 3 times to write an AAR here, I bet there are much better, meaner Japanese players here (EDIT: unless MrKane is there, lol); and I understand his English is not great... but so what?? same here I am not a native speaker, as long as one can communicate, people will jump to help

but anyway; going off topic; we area getting close to July and it will be time to do another summary of the campaign

Great turn, everything worked fine

- Detached carrier escorts found CA Takao limping back; they put one additional torpedo (for a total of 4) + 12 gun hits before leaving it... For some reason, it is almost impossible to watch a Japanese heavy cruiser sinking, they always, somehow, "manages to escape", then depending on damage, possibly sink (or not). In this case, it would be a miracle for it to survive, but I have no confirmation other than one "Pete" destroyed on ground

- Japanese destroyers sank a small xAKL at Nicobar, this was a ship that was damaged on yesterday's naval bombardment, I decided to let it unload, as to get a chance of disembarking some supply before it sank due to fire

That lone Pete FP may just mean that Takao's Jakes had enough range to make it to shore but the Pete did not? Takao could have survived since those first 3 torps were the smaller British aerial ones, but I think it a bit more likely she sank.

The battle was well within range of Japanese float planes, even Pete: Sabang, Victoria Point, etc are all within normal range. Most likely the float planes rebased, but maybe there was one FP on damaged or maintenance state on board

the other tell-tale of it's sinking is that I got an intelligence report of another CA sunk
in my experience, when you get a total random, same class, ship sinking it means that a sinking occured; while getting the correct ship, reported as sunk after some minimal damage is a good indicator it survived in reality

Interesting observation - I had not noticed that. I will keep an eye out for that in the future!

Not always, sometimes the Enterprise was sunk while it is reported that the Lexington was sunk.

but for same class I meant "category"; heavy cruiser (CAs) vs carrier (CVs); not that both were "Yorktown-class" CVs

sorry for the confusion; in my games it is 50-50 it will be "Kagero" for destroyers; doesn't matter which DD I sank, it will show as Kagero

He already had a good picture on the TF compositions thanks to yesterday's LBA attacks; so I am not too worried about parading the fleets

As mentioned a few posts ago, I was expecting an invasion fleet at Oosthaven from sometime

they arrived, and there was a small welcome committee waiting for them
obviously we are talking small scale, that is all what is left of the Dutch airfleet; but still some nice little tinders to spark fires

also notice the heavy casualties while disembarking, most likely not prep for Oosthaven; by now they should be, I mean he is assaulting on June 25

...might get more interesting next turn...

other news:
another sub hit a mine in Merak what really bothers me is that the hex is not marked as mined, therefore I will keep missing submarines because these idiots keep crossing the strait; I guess unless I micromanage every submarine; another click-fest

another bombardment at Rossel, mild results because I already moved most of the planes. PTs defeated again

June 26.42
CV Illustrious joined the party; but regrettably results were so-so at most.

I had both Illustrious and Hermes moving on direction to Oosthaven for the last 2 turns, but he invaded before they reached strike position; hence I had to detach Hermes and run Illustrious at full speed (Hermes is slow at 25knots/ 7 hexes per phase... was not enough).

The end result:
- Only PM strikes due to weather
- 3 Japanese ships torpedoed; I am not positive any will sink
- Illustrious, without any CAP, managed to dodge 9 Betties
- Dutch air force (or what was left of it), destroyed on the ground. I knew this was going to happen, I could had sent them to Palembang, but the chances of additional CAP and additional strikes were too good to pass, besides, this was a good, honorable, way to go. Not a lot of uses for them after the fall of DEI anyway. Surviving pilots will refocus on naval search, as enough Dorniers and Cats were preserved

Now time for the carriers to get out.

I think that the Dutch pilots can go into an Australian B-25 air unit. It had pilots and aircrew from both nations.

I think I am using one Dutch squadron in Australia, or maybe it is Dutch B-25s with American pilots

Dutch pilots are already scarce, and I have a lot of Cats and Dorniers. I also disbanded a good number of squadrons before, so I know eventually they will appear somewhere; I will end up with more squadrons that planes; focus will be on anything that can do naval search

Fighters were already obsolete (Buffalos) or soon to be (P-40s) so I am not losing sleep for those

I was wondering where is Yamato? I haven' seen it so far; and now here it is!!!

This was a really bad turn, the only silver linen I can think about is all the fuel he is wasting; did you know Yamato spends the equivalent of 30 destroyers? and that he has not yet captured Palembang? and that in around 6 months those torpedo duds will start to get fixed?

anyway...
Rossel
I was expecting only one battleship; and I had Nevada nearby, so I thought I was going to surprise him... I probably did, but ended up bringing a knife to a gun fight...
End results: BB Nevada at 50 sys, 16 float, 9 engine, 0 fire; shouldn't sink but won't see any more action until 43

Great Nicobar
he bombed with lots of ships, then got a deliberate attack that almost completely defeated my troops.. I think I will see if I can evac some

Looks like you did pretty good trading a damaged Nevada for a damaged Mutsu. I'll bet you get Nevada long before Mutsu is available!

I agree, it is a longer way home for Mutsu; one of the reasons I have Nevada in ANZ is the fact it can fit in Sydney's yard

Then next turn, even better news:

obviously it is not at risk (too big for that small torpedo), but still now he had to choose between using it damaged or sending it back home

Great Nicobar fell this turn; the battle for Trinkat will start.. a key advantage I have in it is that because while he was focused on Great Nicobar, I managed to build an airfield in Trinkat; that means I will have to trade a Hurricane squadron for some time

On Great Nicobar, I managed to evac some troops, therefore there is no need to purchase back

Here we are, July 1942
Overall, excellent results, but some key indicators:

- Far, far away from a possible Japanese auto-victory
- Air losses at a 2:3 positive ratio
- Slightly higher, but equivalent naval losses
- Obviously higher army losses, but mostly unavoidable losses
- Historical Japanese expansion; except for China, but still one stronghold, Palembang, in Allied hands
- Magwe oil destroyed
- Strong position on the Salomons and Bangladesh area; not so strong position on the Andamans
- In good position to start major offensives in the end of the 3rd quarter

Ship losses by category

Obviously Japan under FOW; I have corrected some unrealistic sinkings,

Carriers: all confirmed except Taiyo
Japan: Akagi, Kaga, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Hiryu, Soryu, Taiyo
Allies: Enterprise, Saratoga, Hornet, Yorktown

Battleships: all confirmed
Japan: Hiei, Kirishima, Nagato, Ise
Allies: West Virginia, Colorado, Oklahoma, Royal Sovereign, Repulse

Hvy Cruisers: overstated, I will need to dig into each
Japan: cofirmed Tone, Chikuma, Takao, Atago, Aoba. Very likely Kinugasa. Still afloat: Kako
Allies: Portland, Houston, Louisville, Dovonshire, Cornwall

Light Cruisers: lots of guesses (to confirm)
Japan:Kashii, Sendai, Kinu, Abukuma, Tatsuta, Yubari
Allies: Sumatra, Adelaide, Emerald, Danae, Glasgow, Concord, Marblehead, Boise

You are doing very well - especially if he has lost that many CAs. Historically the IJN had only lost one CA at Midway by July 1942. In the game, the CAs are Japan's most dangerous surface combat ships. They have speed and range and can take some punishment, and deal out long lances.

BTW, a small correction on an English expression - it is 'has a silver lining', referring to dark clouds that have the sun behind them lighting up the edges in a 'silver lining' that makes them seem less threatening.

thanks for the correction! I hope I will remember next time I use the phrase

And once I go page after page to assess the cruiser loses, I will most likely review the # down; I would say from top of mind, he lost ~5

EDIT: he lost 6 CAs: Atago, Tone, Aoba, Chikuma confirmed

Kinugasa was last see at heavy fires, heavy damage. Takao hit by 4 torpedoes. Very likely

Kako is still afloat

This is what is left of the DEI area:

- 2 confirmed IJA divisions (plus supporting regiments including tanks and ART), but I lost awareness of the landing sites for at least 4 days, which means that he could be unloading more troops

- He just captured Praboemoelin this last turn (July 1st); he will rail his LCUs immediately has has then 2 options:
a) direct approach, which means a river crossing --> siege will then start early 2nd week of July
b) indirect approach, road NW, then NE, then SE, avoiding river crossing --> siege should start in the 3rd week of July

Then this what he will face:

fort level is at 6.72; I hope but I doubt it will reach L7

India is now under a clear frontier between the Allies in Bangladesh and Japan in Burma

I already killed Magwe oil (only 13 points left), therefore not a lot left to care about.

You can see in the map one Japanese LCU (a regiment), that was moving on direction to Akyab; once he got close, I started bombing it merciless; so he decided to withdraw

Unless he tries to invade, this will be a quiet front for the rest of 42

China: you might want to go into the Polish strategy games site and look for Runnersan's AAR for some info on China.

I don't like China and I don't paid too much attention. Suffice to say I plan to set a ring of defense bases near Chingking and Kunming

Salomons; this is probably the one I have posted the most;

Fighting in Rossel island and bombarding all Japanese bases near Pt Moresby, except Rabaul; which is probably too well guarded

July10.42

game is going on, but slowly, not a lot of time to work on it,

what is new?
- Trinkat fell, under overwhelming Japanese pressure, I decided my eastern fleet was too valuable to waste on a lost cause. Plus the British carriers are getting too close to withdrawal, the last thing I need is to get one torpedoed and trapped in, consuming PPs

- I was not paying attention, and he sent a bombardment TF to Rennel island, there was a small TF unloading supplies... it was not pretty to watch
