You probably have some PBYs around - they can likely range and establish an air bridge. Engineer vehicles you'll have to ship anyway, but you don't need specific air transports.

If your opponent hasn't secured other dot bases, you can really start moving forward on the cheap.

I never thought about that!
I will definitively use the PBYs for some specific troop movement; can they transport engineers?

for the time being, I am happy with Great Nicobar and Trinkat, but I can add Car Nicobar easily with air transports. Little Andaman might change sides as I believe it is unocupied. Port Blair is certainly occupied but it is not developed and it hasn't developed in some months, so most likely a naval guard garrison

I have a couple TFs with supply following the invasion, I think I will drop a ship or two to Car Nicobar so that I don't have to worry on air transporting supply

Catalinas can transport anything that dedicated transports can. I find them useful for rescuing parts of the units at Guam and Wake so they don't have to be bought from the dead pile. Same thing for some units in the Phillipines, then those ground units go to India to garrison. They can also do so for Singapore, then those fragments brought to Australia to rebuild and defend. Then they are a start of the forces to be used to retake the DEI.

I will do some testing, now that I have a few far away bases I will like to maintain

for me the key is engineers, at least those that belong to the para LCUs can't be parachuted into a dot base. But maybe the Catalinas can take care

and of course at the end of the day, it is preferably to used freighters; I believe I will have at least one and a half day to unload; then Japan will start to react, and I might need to withdraw the ships... we will see,

Or use APDs in fast transport task forces. They may get there and be gone before the enemy notices.

Most, almost all my APDs are in the Pacific, I am using them with wonderful results

this Indian ocean operation was a quickly reaction to exploit his lack of interest in the Andaman area, so I am not having the best of equipment available, I guess xAKLs will have to suffice

Amphibious TFs hit the beaches at Trinkat and Great Nicobar. Landings were contested by LBAs, I made a mistake when setting CAP and they didn't provide any cover to the amphibious fleets. I was lucky the cruisers were able to dodge the bombs (no torpedoes).
I don't expect any surface TFs from Singapore next turn; they should start arriving on Jun9th, unless he goes full speed

In a separate note.. it seems he is moving a division to Rangoon.. it will be interesting if it gets near the British carriers

and then Rossel

2 enemy TFs spotted on direction to Rossel island, one dive bomber squadron reacted and was wiped out by CAP (17 bombers shot down)

I won't be surprised to see a carrier TF next turns

I have cruisers, DDs and PTs guarding it. I am still debating if I should withdraw the cruisers and DDs, of if I should accept the fight with the hopes of avoiding another naval bombardment at Rossel and maybe keep the TFs in range for Allied LBAs

June 8th, Rossel:

Most fleets withdrew, exception were the PT boats and one cruiser TF; it went south then returned to Rossel, I set this to avoid night fighting, with the idea that they would return to face the enemy at daytime, after PT boats engaged. In the end the Japanese went to Rossel, fought the PTs then somehow kept going south

In any case, mission accomplished for PT boats; they didn't sink anything, they actually got heavy losses, but they were a significant annoyance for the Japanese fleet, which ended reacting to some ghost fleet? and more important, they didn't bombard Rossel

Dive bombers then scored a few hits, and DD Nowaki will likely sink or limp away heavily damaged, BB Fuso got many bomb hits, all bounced and not enough to seriously damage or burn it

Next turn it will be the cruisers' turn to shine against difficult odds, at least they will fight against an enemy that spent some ammo.

Everything went as predicted, more LBAs, but no hits to the invasion fleets; they unloaded undisturbed

submarines found a strong Japanese TF (Haruna, Maya, Oi). It will arrive at daytime next turn (unless full speed) and it will fight the British eastern fleet

June9, Trinkat and Great Nicobar

For some reason, the enemy TF decided not to strike the beaches; this meant another relatively unimpeded unload day; which is great news

Lots of LBAs, most were destroyed by CAP or missed, the only exception was a returning small xAKL TF that was intercepted and wiped out

also, CM Abdiel hit a reef while laying mines, it will try to limp back to Colombo

June 8th, Rossel island

Can't help to admire the prowess of Japanese surface TFs at night time
Fuso's TF, the one that yesterday sank a few PTs, then spent ammo against dive bombers (while receiving some bomb hits) pulled another great performance today's turn:
- First, it defeated cruiser TF in 2 night time battles
- Second, it defeated 2 more PT boat TFs in Rossel island
- then proceeded to bombard the island, inflicting good damage, still inside the nightime phase
- then withdrew with minimal damage, out of LBA range by the end of the day phase,

And as you can see here, the real purpose of this raid was to clean the way for another (cruiser) TF, to get in bombardment range to hit heavy bombers at Pt Moresby

I will rebase squadrons, but there is a good chance losses will be high, as there are many planes under maintenance

June 10th was a quiet turn, only highlight was air battles over Great Nikobar and Trinkat in which at least 20 Netties went down. and I am still puzzled there was no bombardment of Port Moresby

But then, June 11th, and he finally decided to engage the British fleets at Great Nikobar. 3 battles in total, the 1st was a clean Japanese win against light cruisers, the 2nd one was really beautiful if costly, the 3rd one a big disappointment as the Dutch let them escape
Another disappointment was the CV Illustrious, as the swordfish couldn't find targets due to weather/ range

Time for the invasion fleets to return home; this while Illustrious would try to catch some damaged enemy ships

Other news: RO-68 sunk

Losses:
Allies lost CAs Devonshire, Cornwall, CL Danae and DD Hotspur
Japan lost CA Mogami (confirmed by ground float plane losses), possibly CL Kinu and DD Yamakaze
BB Yamashiro ate a torpedo and should be out of commission for some time, CL Kitakami had some serious fire but should survive

As expected, he ended up bombing Great Nicobar with his other TF; he only got a few xAKLs that I left there

The carriers were able to catch him later on, but regrettably the swordfish aim was poor; only on DD hit, likely sunk
EDIT: looking at the combat report... I can't see the DD torpedoed.. synch bug???

EDIT#2: it is actually good, because in my combat replay, CA Vincennes was torpedoed and was having flooding issues. in the turn it is in perfect shape

and now a question for Sherlock Holmes

On June 11th report, I got 2 Petes, 1 Jake as ground losses, that is very consistent with the fact CA Mogami ended up in very poor shape; heavy fires, heavy damage, so that is perfect match

Then on June 12th, I get this new report with 8 Petes + 4 Jakes...
that is great! but how??

easiest explanation is that for the last 2 turns I have been bombing Milne Bay and looks like I finally sank AV Kiyokawa Maru... but then why he would still have the float planes embarked??? do they fly from a disbanded ship? I don't think so, I normally rebase them as soon as the AV disbands (in the same base)

EDIT: I was trying to convince myself that a damaged BB also sank this turn, but no, it seems that he kept squadrons Kiyokawa Maru-1 and Kiyokawa Maru-2 without change from Dec 7th 41.. End of mystery, no battleship sunk

I know it is not efficient, but I understand the need of superior numbers/ firepower. Smaller TFs are more optimal but had more chances of crippling damage focused on fewer ships

On June 16.42, he sent his surface fleets to bombard Rossel island,

once again, I defended with PTs and once again they failed to do anything other than die.

Actually this time, they finally achieved what I consider is their main objective; to delay the enemy TF enough so that it ends inside LBA range; that they achieved, but regrettably the damage to the airbase was extensive and my LBAs didn't fly; it will be some more days to have Tagula island at airfield level 2!

Only silver linen is that it looks like somehow some destroyers got dropped from the TF, maybe a collision? in any case CAT put some bombs to a destroyer

I guess we are in a time loop

another bombardment at Rossel, another inconclusive fight against Allied TF; another failed attempt by PT boats
another dive bomber failure

but I am patient, and I know I will get him sooner or later

and I am starting to mop up invaders at Rossel; should run out of supplies soon

Also, some storm brewing at the Andaman islands, probably will get interesting next turn

Japan launched a desperate counter invasion (think Ichiki's detachment equivalent) at Great Nicobar

I am not too worried about the enemy troops, as he sent them piecemeal and doesn't look to be prep for Great Nicobar

battles are imminent

other news:

I got an enemy resupply TF at Guadalcanal, one freighter sank, some others burning

success at sub minelaying: DD Kamikaze hit a mine; it was deployed a couple turns ago by a Dutch submarine

keep pressuring Rossel's "hunger island"; he is now low on supply, which means he is doomed

Really strange counterlandings.....the one at Rossel Island, in addition to being far too weak, includes a Brigade that was bought out from China; an odd choice. I think there are much better candidates to spend PPs on other than that unit. Including all that artillery is also puzzling.

And that landing at Great Nicobar has no chance

With counterlandings, you need to go big or go home.....a division at least on those spots, and even then, you need to control the air and sea

just remember that the KB is not indestructible, always use it carefully... without the KB Japan is very vulnerable

I would guess he had it available at Rabaul when he decided to launch the attack; I initially thought it was a faint, a bait invasion to get CV Hornet; and then after a day he was going to withdraw it

Looks like it was not a faint, but in any case he succeeded in sinking Hornet, which is worth more than the LCUs he will lose; I only sank a slow CVE which was a great exchange for Japan

Regarding Nicobar, totally agree, best guess is he thought I had battalion sized LCU. That said, he has LBAs bombing daily, I am too far away to bring support, other than sending the Eastern fleet for specific operations, like the one that is going to start next turn

June 22.42 Great Nicobar:

Japan bombarded Great Nicobar, I was not expecting it to happen this turn; the TF was relatively far away, I guess it ran full speed. End result is that my "deliberate attack" failed, also some damage to the base and troops

Enemy unloaded undisturbed; and on the air phase CV Illustrious focused on the surface TF instead of the transports, the results were good; for the loss of 8 Martlets and 2 Albacores, I put 3 torpedoes on CA Takao

June 22.42 Pacific:

On the Pacific, the main event was the continuation of the attack on a supply convoy at Guadalcanal and sweep battles over Rossel island

June 22.42 Others:

BB Ise, which was heavily damaged a month ago, is now confirmed as sunk, KAMPAI!

And finally , it seems that he will commit to fortress Palembang. intel confirms a TF moving on direction to Oosthaven. The unit transported is "48th IJA Division"; which was deployed on Luzon; so probably will come from Manila or Singapore

By now, June22.42, it will be a cake walk to take Oosthaven, no more mines or naval assets to try to stop it, I might try to direct the carriers (Hermes and Illustrious), but 15 Swordfish are too few to seriously damage a TF that is probably defended by battleships and CAP, plus Martlets already depleted last turn and there is no time to go back to Colombo
