IJ commander resurrected - Mundy (A) vs. Castor Troy (IJ) - restricted AAR

Post by castor troy »

Hi guys!

So after coming back to the forum after my long absence due to my accident I'm also back into the game. Was aiming at a PBEM as the Allied commander but am now going as the IJ commander vs Mundy. I really appriciate playing a well known forum veteran! [&o]

Orders are given and the first turn goes in... not sure I'm happy about the outcome and at the moment I'm a tad frustrated by the workload one has to do the first turns as the IJ commander

Midget Sub attack inside harbor of Pearl Harbor!!!

Japanese Ships
SSX Ha-19, hits 3

Allied Ships
PC Taney
BB Pennsylvania, Torpedo hits 1
PC Tiger

PC Tiger cannot reach attack position over SSX Ha-19
PC Tiger loses contact with SSX Ha-19
PC Taney cannot reach attack position over SSX Ha-19
SSX Ha-19 eludes PC Taney by hugging bottom

forgot about the subs around Pearl and four of them launch midgets to attack the Pacific Fleet. Have never seen a midget scoring a hit in all the years playing. Won't matter much, a single torp hit will be repaired in Pearl's shipyard probably within 4-5 weeks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Kota Bharu at 53,77

Allied Ships

at the same time I-157 kills a small freighter. IIRC this attack is something I've always seen in my game starts...

as you can see, the target is Manila, not Hawaii... before KB strikes we see a combined attack by the IJNAF and IJAAF... results are, well, poor... dropping only one bomb per IJN bomber means literally mostly misses and the couple of IJA bombers didn't do much better...

here's KB! Doing better than the level bombers but not nearly as good as expected... not one torpedo was dropped, the Kates scored an ok number of 800kg bomb hits and the Vals scored their 250kg bomb hits (which don't do all that much in Babes with the reduced bomb damage). End result is probably 10-12 subs sunk, which is not even 50% of the submarine fleet based at Manila. Imagine real life 100+ level bombers plus nearly 300 carrier based bombers attacking a harbour when the main target were the subs and you don't even take out halve of the 25 subs based there... Castor is not happy... [8|]

Not that it would really hurt the Allied player to even lose all subs there, when the duds are fixed he will swim in subs anyways but taking those out early would be usually worth a damaged or sunk IJ carrier in the first year, at least that's my experience. Main reason not to go for Pearl aren't the subs though but the fact that after you attack Hawaii you have your carriers in a corner you don't need them so I opted for Manila.

this one was extremly surprising to me in more than one way... first off, Mundy forgot to change orders of Force Z, meaning the Brits end up in my bomber range. Second, while Force Z was spotted all day long we only launch one pityful strike that is even shot up by two damned Buffalos and then around halve of my bombers attack from ahead or stern unable to hit POW or Repulse. Those that target the ships broadsides land three torps on Repulse for literally no damage. No follow on explosions, no critical damage, nothing. Repulse doesn't even end up heavily damaged after those 3 torps... what a start...

after the US fighters had a field day with our strikes in the morning we still see more than 2 dozen Warhawks on Cap when KB launches another port strike to at least kill some more shipping there... as you can see, NOT A SINGLE SUB was hit today, means all of the subs that were still afloat left Manila already... that's pretty disappointing... at best we sunk a dozen subs...

I think that it would be more effective to use the Kates, Nells, and Bettys at 1000 feet with bombs and not torpedoes on the unarmored ships. Put the Nells and Bettys on naval torpedo attack with no torpedoes available and they will carry two 250 kg bombs and four 60 kg bombs at normal range. The Kates will carry two 250 kg bombs. I have had 4 Kates attack and hit with 6 bombs. Even early Allied cruisers are vulnerable to the 250 kg bombs.

Also, with the fleeing ships broken into small TFs, split your bombers to be able to attack as many targets as is possible. It is like stomping on bugs.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

they also intercept this convoy, a way more valuable one as Houston is escorting some small freighters, dunno why, the freighters are empty and Houston should have long been running south or towards Sumatra... lots of torpedoes fired again for no hits, Houston takes a couple of 20cm hits that penetrate her belt armor... she's not heavily damaged but heavy fires might cause some probs... would have preferred sending her to the bottom considering the advantage we had...

ugh! bad result IMO for this attack... 66th Inf Reg took 70% disablements as if they did a Banzai charge... guess we need at least 2 more deliberate attacks to take the base, means the unrestricted div there that should go into the DEI will take some more disablements... not good, not good!

RE: IJ commander resurrected - Mundy (A) vs. Castor Troy (IJ) - restricted AAR

Post by RangerJoe »

In my current game against the AI, the Enterprise group ran over a midget sub carrier with no reaction set. I had it going to get another minisub. Out of 8 torpedoes fired, only two hit - one for an ammmo storage explosion, the other for a fuel explosion. It did not try to make Johnston Island and go into the port there. It registered as sunk two days later near Lahina. So luck can be a factor.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing!

this was the main air action today when KB sends 100+ aircraft to attack those shitty ships Mundy kept at Singapore to draw search aircraft and airstrikes into his Cap... lost several Vals during the air search phase due to this already... the Zeroes do their job but we also suffer some losses over the course of the day... would have liked to launch a sweep on Singers first but it didn't launch at all... tally of the day is still okayish but the air losses weren't worth those hits on 1 pt trash ships that haven't got any other use... 20 Buffaolos reported shot down is about one third of his total Buffalos available at Singers...

bringing this small unit to Kavieng to seize the suspected empty base but then I remember the base isn't empty but held by an even smaller Allied unit... wonder if I can take the base with 20av... uses a fast transport TF as I have spotted Mundy's two carriers off Tarawa earlier which might even swing towards the Rabaul area... fast transport didn't work though, the TF was still sitting at the base during the whole day... pff...

was rather shocked to see only 20 Zeroes on Cap when this strike was incoming! First thought was I screwed up my Cap settings but I didn't! All four Daitais were set to 50% Cap and we get a meager 20 into the air, this could be total disaster as soon as we face something that is able to hit moving ships... didn't like seeing those bombers dropping their load at 1000ft on Soryu even though they are only dropping 250lb bombs which are not really a threat in this mod... was the first attack on KB in this game and it's only a week into the campaign...

the day wasn't yet over and now the real threat attacked KB! Only a dozen Zeroes left to defend the carries and we see those torpedo armed biplanes slowly approaching our carries in really bad weather... first thought was Bismarck... the couple of fighters on Cap did a good job so I can't blame them but 5 Vildebeest manage to attack the carriers targetting 3 of them in small packs... this, bad weather and quite some fierce flak fire meant no hits but some high blood pressure on my side... not afraid of losing a carrier to such a strike but a torp hit on one of the fleet carriers can screw up my planning and result in more severe losses later on...

enemy sent out all of his remaining fighters on escort to attack KB so there's nothing left to be shot down over Singers...

looking at today's air losses it was a clear victory vs the RAF even though I was on my toes when I saw those strikes incoming... pretty much all Buffalos the RAF has available at Singapore are destroyed already and halve a dozen Vildebeest shot down is also great as these are the only aircraft that can really hurt my ships in this area at this stage of the war...

RE: IJ commander resurrected - Mundy (A) vs. Castor Troy (IJ) - restricted AAR

Post by castor troy »

One week into the war and I have just finished all changes I had to do to my industry. Aircraft, R&D, engines... insane workload, not to even talk about trying to relocate the merchant fleet to useful locations. Will take another 2 months until I have everything where I want it to be and then it's time to set up all the CS TF and get oil and ressources flowing back to the home islands.

I don't know if you do this, but if you LRCAP his air bases that will increase his OP losses. Even a 10% LRCAP works.

Castor,

only when I read your famous red "rants" once more I realized how much I had missed your AARs.

thanks for the kind words! I'm already really enjoying the game vs Mundy as he seems to be a great guy, so playing as well as doing the AAR is really fun!

what a waste of torps... KB has spent 75% of it's torps already and due to not knowing where Prince of Wales and the rest of the Allied surface forces are we have ordered KB to retreat a bit North for now... we scored over 200 pts for ships sunk today and absolutely over achieved our goal as KB only had the order to attack the ASW forces around Soerabaja... luck was on our side today...
