54 Sqn (Hornchurch – Spitfire VA) 4.6.41

The Squadron took off on an offensive patrol over France at 1700 hours. They made a circuit of Boulogne and came out over Calais. When they returned it was with the news the George Gribble came down over the Sea. He and Batchelor had been chasing an Me.109, when Batchelor’s attention was turned away be a second Me.109 a/c. He heard George say that his engine had cut, and saw him bale out and land in the sea some 12 miles out from England. Batchelor orbited for nearly half an hour before he came home, but no rescue boats picked George up. Flight Lieutenant D.G. Gribble D.F.C. was the last member of the old “54”. His exploits are recorded on nearly every page of this History. It only remains to be said that his personality was everywhere identified with the name of this Squadron, and no one who knew him or heard his happy laugh would ever forget the affection they felt from the first. This loss left the Squadron and whole Station more than a little cast down.

ADDENDUM – F/Lt. Gribble was never recovered.

CIRCUS 12

Target: St. Omer Aerodrome

Escort: Northolt Wing (1, 312, 303)
Offensive Patrol Dunkirk-Gravelines – Hornchurch Wing (54, 603)
Offensive Patrol Marquise-St.Ingelvert-Guines-Calais-Marck – Biggin Hill Wing (74, 92)
Offensive Patrol Straits of Dover – Twelve A/C (145, 610, 616)

110 Sqn (Wattisham – Blenheim IV) 14.6.41

9 aircraft of this Squadron together with 3 of 105 Squadron Swanton Morley, set course from Wattishame at 0633 hours to attack ST. OMER Aerodrome. Fighter escort was picked up over Maidstone. Before reaching the target two aircraft were forced to fall out as they were unable to keep up with the formation. Of the remaining aircraft of this Squadron 5 bombed ST. OMER (Fort Rouge), whilst individual results were unobserved, bursts were seen amongst buildings on the SW corner of the aerodrome. The remaining 3 aircraft attacked ST. OMER (Longuenesse) and bursts were seen at the South end of the aerodrome. One stick of bombs overshot to the SW of the aerodrome. One aircraft attacked ST. OMER (Fort Rouge) with one bomb, and when he saw ST. OMER (Longuenesse) he continued on his course, dropping remaining bombs on this target. 2 aircraft landed at Manston on the return journey with engine trouble. One aircraft did not return to base and the following are posted as missing:

------- P.O. Howes, P.R.G. – Obserrver
751656 Sgt. Cox, R.L. – W.Op. A.G.

35 Sqn(Linton-on-Ouse – Halifax I) 15.6.41

Ten aircraft took off from LINTON to attack the target at HANOVER. Owing to 10/10 cloud persisting from the English coast to the target, it was not completely justified, but level attacks were successfully delivered by eight aircraft from heights between 8,000 and 14,000 ft. and one aircraft descended below the cloud to 2,000 ft. to deliver its attack. One aircraft proceeded on to attack OSNABROOK whilst the remaining aircraft failed to see the target at all, returned to Base with the bombs. One aircraft was damaged over the target area by shell bursts, another was attacked by enemy fighters receiving serious damage although the tail gunner was wounded, he kept up his fire and succeeded in driving off the enemy. Halifax L 9506 Pilot F/O. LASHBROOK skidded on landing due to drift, swung round violently causing the Port undercarriage to collapse, and crashed. None of the crew were injured.

ADDENDUM – Halifax L9506 was piloted by F/O. J.W. Murray DFM. F/O. Lashbrook was flying Halifax L9507, which landed without incident.
