It's July 1964 and SAC strikes the Chinese nuclear weapons program using the B-58 Hustler supersonic strike bomber.

You are Commander, 64th Bombardment Squadron (Medium) of the 43rd Bombardment Wing, Strategic Air Command (SAC) based at Carswell AFB, Texas. Wing Operations has advised that your squadron has been stood down from Alert status and you are to immediately fly to SAC HQ at Offut AFB by Lockheed C-140 Jetstar executive transport You have been selected to plan and execute OPERATION QUIET CONCERT, a preemptive nuclear attack on China's nuclear weapons program. Mission assets, including some of your B-58A bombers have be sent to the British Indian Ocean territory of Diego Garcia from which you will launch the raid.

CMANO allows and benefits from the Player using detailed mission planning to accomplish the scenario goals. Here the goal is a deep strike against the PRC nuclear development and test site at Lop Nur, in the deserts of Western China. The targets are at the limits of the Hustlers endurance envelope but you have plenty of tankers and nuclear release has been authorized. Send your B-58s from Diego Garcia to Lop Nur, nuke the place flat and bring them back safely.

There are Special Actions and significant restrictions imposed on your mission planning and execution by political and diplomatic considerations. Read the Scenario Description and Player Briefing carefully, it will be very easy to suffer a Victory Point disaster if you fail to follow orders.

The scenario should be complete as is but observations and recommendations for improvement will be welcome. Thanks for trying The Hustlers.

Edit: Scenario updated to ensure that the PLAAF becomes Hostile when the Imperialist Running Dog Lackys of Capitalism start nuking the People's Republic. See new version below.

Nice!

I wish they'd have had conventional payload for Hustler too, it'd have made even more fun scenarios.

Great work. It's a fun little scenario and I can never get enough of B-58's and nuclear weapons.

I chose to refuel over Afghanistan and ingress/egress over Pakistan. All targets were destroyed (4x B-61's on Lop Nor and a 5th on the test site) and both bombers survived. But they had to hit afterburner a few times to escape pursuing MiG's and it got quite tense watching the fuel gauges drop as they returned to Afghani airspace. Unfortunately I accidentally overflew a tiny nub of Soviet territory and then the AI on two of my tankers crossed into forbidden Pakistani airspace after hitting bingo so my score was terrible.

However, I did note a potential problem. On my ingress I was shadowed by both MiG-21's and MiG-17's, but they never attacked - perhaps consider giving them more liberal ROE's? I know if I were a Chinese air defense commander I probably wouldn't be letting B-58's overfly my nuclear test site without doing anything.

This is built on CWDB 445 instead of the most up to date 477. Any particular reason?

I see what happened here and it is an unintended consequence of using the Unfriendly posture for the PLAAF against SAC rather than using a Hostile posture from the beginning. I see a way to sort it so that the defenders behave more reasonably and will upload when fixed. Thanks for the comments, hope it wasn't too easy.

Scenario updated. Player actions should now correctly trigger a Hostile posture from the PLAAF side. Unzip where the first version of the scenario lives and overwrite as necessary.

Running the second version posted. Once my lead tankers entered Afghanistan I got the following message/score changes.

quote:

7/12/1966 9:01 PM: Score changed from 0 to -2000. Reason: Event Action: 'SAC Minus 2000 VP' has been fired (part of Event: 'SAC Violates Soviet Airspace')

7/12/1966 9:01 PM: Score changed from -2000 to -3000. Reason: Event Action: 'SAC Minus 1000 VP' has been fired (part of Event: 'SAC Violates Soviet Airspace')

It may be that they were below 32000ft AGL since I had been sending them in at 36k ASL and the mountains were a bit higher than I thought at first. Not sure why it says Soviet Airspace, though.

Thank you for the test. Violation of Soviet airspace gets you minus 3000 VP deliberately but has nothing to do with altitude and was done this way to avoid creating yet another Action. Minimum altitudes are specified in the Briefing but they are just for flavour and have no effect on the scenario. In the Editor, check the Soviet side and examine the Exclusion Zone that runs along the Soviet frontier. The only way that event should have fired is if any of your units inadvertently entered the area. If that is not the case, please post a save when the event fires and I will try to figure out what fired the Soviet Airspace Violation event.

The quick and dirty is that if you violate Soviet airspace, you cannot win on Victory Points and this is what is intended.

Definitely not in Russian territory (had just gone from Pakistan to Afghanistan). I checked and it looks like you made RPs for exclusion zones invisible but the RPs for the Soviet Airspace violation != the RPs of the Soviet Airspace exclusion zone. This was the highlight I got in the game when I was looking at the trigger...

Hmm, I also got the two minus points events for overflying Soviet airspace but I didn't notice until long after they had triggered and just assumed that I had messed up my flightpath in the complicated borders of north Afghanistan/Pakistan. I wonder if I actually experience the same error?

I have not been able to reproduce this problem and cannot find any anomalies in the Soviet Exclusion Zone that triggers the Violates Soviet Airspace action. Curious. However, Pakistan does not share a frontier with the Soviet Union, the area south of the frontier, known as the Wakhan Corridor, does not show up well in CMANO but the Reference Points defining the Exclusion Zone accurately follow the actual Afghan-Soviet border. Afghanistan does share a small frontier with the PRC around N37* 04' E74* 50'. Note that there are some differences between the frontier as described in CMANO with the convoluted and disputed borders shown on Google Earth imagery.

I checked every reference point that comprise the Soviet Exclusion Zone (over one-hundred of them) and none are located in Pakistan. The image attachment above shows all of the exclusion zones but if you switch to side Soviet Union and open Soviet Airspace in the Edit Exclusion Zone window you can clearly see that the zone nowhere enters Afghanistan or Pakistan. There may be some strange interaction between the Afghan Tanker Zone (defined in side Neutral) and the Soviet Airspace exclusion zone but I cannot see how or why this could happen unless there is some sort of exclusion zone bug.

Will keep looking.

Hi randomizer

I think I know why the Violated soviet airspace trigger fires.

The Soviet exclusion zone is defined by RP 526-568, but the trigger fires when a player unit enters the area defined by RP 460-568.
Thats the Indian and Soviet zones added together. That creates a rather weird exclusion zone.

Other than that, I like it.
The refueling is quite challenging but doable.

Hope this helped.

Good Catch, thanks!

The reason why I could not replicate the error was because I mistakenly uploaded the wrong version as I had already deleted the RP from the Afghan No Tanker Zone that were included in the Soviet Airspace exclusion zone. I downloaded the released version and discovered my error. One sometimes ends up with multiple scenarios-in-progress and sometimes managing them results in things that make one go D'oh... Apologies to all for the inconvenience.

Here it is, should be the final, pending suggestions for improvement.

Included is a version without aircraft damage that does not require Chains of War DLC.

Fixed PLAAF is hostile action.

Playing the version with aircraft damage, I encountered a lua error in the "PLAAF is Hostile!" action. PLAAF, SAC, and H are in double quotes, i.e. ("PLAAF", "SAC", "H"). Lua apparently requires single quotes, i.e. ('PLAAF', 'SAC', 'H'). Easy fix.

Thanks for the heads-up. Actually surprised that nobody, including me, caught this earlier.

To be clear, Lua scripts do not generally give a sordid rodent's bottom whether you use single quotes (') or double quotes (") provided they are uniform for the particular item. In this case the ''PLAAF" actually lead off with two single quotes ('') and ended with a double ("). An inexcusable error on my part that comes from copy/pasting from my existing Lua script library and then incorrectly editing the pasted version. Short cuts can make long delays when Lua scripting if one is in a hurry.

All fixed now, overwrite the previous versions.

I actually don't know anything about lua, I just figured the problem had something to do with punctuation. I just messed around with it until I stumbled across a solution.

Very cool scenario, by the way. I love the jets of the late 50s/early 60s. I wish the B-70 Valkyrie was in the database.

Wow! Supercruise at mach 3 and 90000 feet!
It didn't occur to me to look in the cold war database instead of db3000. This is why I'm a "recruit."
