Just a pair little points about your enemy notes:

MiG-27 (and MiG-23BN if you ever encounter them in other scenarios) are the Strike variants of the Flogger family. So they are no threat against you air units at all. They will instead be used to threaten your ships with air to surface missiles. The ones they carry are relatively short ranged (20nm or less) so the threat they represent it's small, but not negligible.

AA-9 Has a nominal range of 90nm. Albeit against fighter-sized targets effective range goes down to roughly 70nm and jamming can reduce it even further, against bigger support units (AWACS, tankers, airliner based recon and jamming platforms) they can fire close if not at nominal range and give you a nasty surprise if you do not expect it.

Another note Mike.

I believe the Reds have 'Single Unit Airfields' so they are essentially impervious to your attacks. I suspect the designer wanted you to focus on A2A and SEAD vise OCA (Offensive Counter Air).

For a first marshall and then strike action, you must prepare the strike mission without assigning the strikers to it. After that, prepare a support mission in the marshalling zone, uncheck the 1/3 rule box and assing all the strikers to the support mission. Once the planes are in the marshall zone unassign them and inmediately reassign them to the strike mission.

Be careful with the fuel management if you want to operate close to max strike range, a support mission calculates the remaining fuel until bingo under the assumption that the plane is going to retain it's loadout onboard in the return trip. The strike range on the other hand it's calculated assuming that the plane it's gonna be unloaded in the return leg, so you can find you planes returning to base due to bingo when marshalling at a distance nominally within strike range.

In those cases you can simply give them tanker support if available, or change the support mission settings so the planes do not RTB when they hit bingo state. The later it's risky for obvious reasons, a too prolonged marshalling operation could cause your planes to become short of fuel even after having fired their heavy ordnance with catastrophical consecuences.

Those two legs are 350nm, or 42 minutes. It may make a difference if your timing is tight.

You may also want to look at your Weapons Release Authorization for the HARM missiles, as you can change the number of weapons they will launch against each target type. By default I believe it uses the "Missile Defense Value" of the target. It can be configured separately for different missions. If there are AD targets you feel are critical to take down, you could increase the number of weapons per target (either something like 2x missile defense value, or a fixed number of missiles) and reduce the number of targets and still use all the missiles as they get into range.

Mike,

Good job on the MiG-31s. The AA-9 like the AiM-54 Phoenix on F-14s is a long range freight train of a missile. If you're not prepared it will hurt - a lot - but fighters, especially those with AMRAAMs can get the drop on them if you have jammer and AWACS support.

He may have intercept missions set up as well as CAPs - watch for fighters taking off in response to your actions, try and get the trigger range and use it to your advantage. You may call that a gamey tactic but it's probably not to far from reality that highly controlled GCI units will just keep on doing what they're told.

Bart,

Thanks, I think I was very lucky.

As for the intercept missions, so far I have managed to avoid them. In the latest attack, I did not notice more Rebel planes in the air. I also was able to turn the planes around to avoid getting too close. At some point, I will have to engage the Rebel fighters.

Here is the update after the second SEAD strike

THANKS! I learn a LOT from these types of write-ups. Not just from you, but from the very experienced players who give advice. As a newb, I know what I =want= to do, but the complexity of the game, combined with the intricacies/quirks of the UI, make it hard to execute.

Thanks for the support. I really enjoy working through the issues and as a new player the advice I get is wonderful. I agree, I often know what I want to achieve, but not sure how to do it.

Careful with that Flak range, the stated range is for land/surface contacts only.

If you look at the shell spreadsheet, the anti-air range is significantly shorter.

I'm curious about the large number of SA-7 "Losses".

Are they expenditures? If so, that's a LOT of Manpad launches; how close are your strike platforms getting?

If they weren't launched, but were actually lost due to combat damage, that's a lot of good bombing/strafing, and some unlucky SA-7 teams.

Like I said, the numbers make me curious about how them. (Were they cued by radar? We're all well aware of the IR seeker cool-down limits, battery life, etc. The SA-7 is not something kept "hot and ready".)

The MANPADs are probably the ones that are component parts to the lager SAM units. Many Soviet SAM units have integral SA-7 as close in defence. They would get killed when that larger units get slammed.
