Look out for the clock: in a couple of missions i left out many VPs because i was too worried about losses.

Stucco,

I'm worried about time too. My attack is supposed to arrive in town over the next 60 minutes, so that leaves a bit of time to capture and then hold the objectives. Not much time for any mistakes...

I knew that the Brits had reinforcements – should have had someone looking to the NW! Damn, they came out of nowhere and did lots of damage. Not helped by the poor visibility!

I lost the last part of the first TB and a bunch of my AA weapons.

Oh well.

The attack is going well in the South. I’m in the town and moving towards the first objective.

One Hind Pl will move NW to take on the newly arrived Brits. The 3rd TB is also moving that direction.

I've played this many times - Brits & Soviets,
I'm thoroughly enjoying your running report,
Always surprising how other people play out the senario, can't wait to see the finish.

Stucco,

Yes, that was a mean move by the Brits. Man their infantry is hard to kill!

Heinz,

Glad you are enjoying it - I am too. It is an interesting battle.

Here is the latest situation from the battle.

Jim,

It was a very relaxing and enjoyable vacation, thanks!

This battle has less than an hour left. It is going to be a close call...

Stucco,

There are a lot of Brit tanks - hopefully they will not be able to cross the river in any numbers. I'm frustrated that my MRBs are not killing off the Brit infantry in the town and around the objectives. Oh well, time is running out for both sides.

mm.. looks like you have run out of time..
Out of curiosity is the Brit Off Map 105 Abbots giving you any grief?, played this from the NATO side, I'm not hitting a Sausage, even increased the Abbots 'Area' value to 5 is registering no kills..

What a meat grinder! Great posts. I wish I had more free time to play those myself but more important work is calling.

Game is over - I have a bunch of posts to cover this.

Heinz,

The Abbots did nothing - not a single kill.

The Tornado flight was very dangerous...

Heinz,

Time was running out - on both sides. The Brits hit the 70% losses first - but not by much.

AAR

What did I do right?

The left hook was a very good idea – it got me across the river quickly and without the Brits hitting me as I crossed. I liked how I was able to link up a TB and the MRB to attack the town.

I would like to take credit for my artillery, but letting the FSCC control most of it worked out fine. I did fine tune things during the command cycles.

My use of the Hinds was good. I used them to get into the Brit depth – which was very helpful.

I was able to control the advance of the units fairly well by good placement and movement of the three waypoints. I missed a couple of times, but overall this worked really well. I was also able to move the MRCs to the East edge of the town, which limited the ability of the British Chieftains from hitting them as they advanced.

What could I improve on?

Flank protection – I had someone looking South, never thought about the Brits coming in from the North...

Use of the Hinds – I should have brought them back to resupply earlier – it would have been so much better if I could have had both Pl attacking the Brit attack from the North.

Letting units sit in the open. I lost two TBs in the North because I let them sit still or advanced them into trouble. This almost cost me the game.

Overall thoughts

This scenario was fun. It is hard to play the Soviets – with their long command cycles and the large groupings – but it was a good challenge and lots of fun.

I was not sure how it was going to end.

Surprises – the ineffectiveness of the Brit artillery and my MRBs.

Comment – I find it really interesting how far into and through urban areas units can see and engage. The Brit tanks on the Northern side of the river were taking really good shots at my tanks in the centre of the town – I do not think that they would be seeing them well enough to do this.

Hi Mike,

We will be addressing the visibility into urban areas (and into heavy forest) in Southern Storm, as part of the improvements to line-of-sight.

Thanks for your AARs. Looking forward to the next one...

William

Winning against a stronger (point-wise) NATO force is really good work. Nice battle.

Stucco,

Thanks, I like this game as players have lots of different options for trying to achieve victory. I have said this before, I wish I had this when I was an instructor at our Field Artillery School...

Have a good day,
