Is the Soviet Union a bit too strong in the scenario, given how quickly it started its big counteroffensive? Or did the Soviets just play really well? Or did you do some costly mistake?

#3 !
I puushed my troops far too much during winter and took massive losses. After I won Lenningrad and Odessa, I abslutely wanted to be in Moscow for Christmas. Tragic error. And also I'm a beginner at toaw so supply is still a mystery ;-)
Otherwise no, I think the scenario is very well balanced, given its complexity. Well, it's at least my rookie impression, some others might disagree of course.
I definitely would advise you to try it in PBEM. Both sides seem interesting to play.

The mistake that probably saved Russia was not noticing the British are set up for an offensive on turn one. At the beginning of this scenario the Axis player has Barbarossa to launch and the Allied player has an attack in N. Africa that historically was a failure. I don't think Nukkxx noticed it until turn two or three. By then the Africa Corp was surrounded at Tobruk. I was able to destroy it quickly which freed up the 8'th Army which I then used to counterattack in the Crimea. That counterattack probably saved Russia actually. He was moving and I couldn't stop it much until then.
I'm not in complete disagreement that the Russian might be a bit overpowered. I do have a ridiculous number of counters to use at this point. I didn't let many get surrounded and destroyed early either, so they piled up over time to some extent.
Anyways, its a really fun scenario. Nukkxx is clearly an experienced strategy gamer who has made some mistakes because of unfamiliarity with the nuances of TOAW.
Mistakes I was able to take advantage of.
And we were in agreement from the beginning to play wide open strategically. We are not trying to follow historical precedent.
What fun is that anyway?
Good Game Nukkxx. If you want the pain to end all you have to do is surrender Hitler so I can parade him down Red Square with his wanker hanging out at the tale end of our victory parade. And then withdraw to 1936 borders. Then we can call it even.
I think that's fair.

Turn 44 - April 19th, 1941

- Eastern front news:
The Soviet counter attack seems somehow contained. More fresh troop are expected. The Fuhrer even mentioned that the Soviet Union invasion might resume soon !

Still several weaknesses to address on the southern front.

- War in China:
Japan offensive progress in difficult terrain (Jungle guerrilla).
Nearing the soviet corridor to block far east soviet reinforcements from reaching the eastern front.

How many units are in the game at the start? And how many are "created" each year?

3300/3800 units says the scenario briefing, but many aren't activated. Complexity score : 419.000
Couldn't tell you for the number of units created as reinforcement are partly units that were previously deactivated.
IMO the best is you open it in head-to-head mode (to prevent AI to play a full turn) and browse the units and the reinforcement schedule for both side.
Sorry, couldn't be more specific. It's quite a complex scenario. It's in the Misc directory and comes in 3 versions: 39-45, 41-45 and 43-45
We are playing the 41-45 version starting with Barbarossa and Afrika that as mdanz said, I totally screwed up

Turn 46 - May 3rd, 1942
--------------------------------------
Organizing the defense of the Reich !
--------------------------------------
- Troops from the whole Reich, including civilians are sent to the front to contain the communists assault.
- The Soviets have launched a massive counter offensive on the three theaters. Some rogue communist elements (a few divisions) tried to sneak inside Leningrad from the Finland border as the city was left mostly unguarded (all the men are on the front). Fortunately we were able to organize an emergency landing south of the city and the assault is now under control and the terrorists punished.
- The situation in the Balkans is critical. Fortunately, the mountains can become a natural ally and a good line of defense allowing us to channel the enemy with a corridor tight enough so that we can defend.
- Situation around the swamp is still on red code.
- The Fuhrer is nervous and ordered major changes in our defense doctrine.

Meanwhile in China Japan is kicking #sses

In the summer of 1942 the representatives of the Allied powers, ie: Stalin and Churchill with a token presence by the relieved Americans) accepted the surrender of the Fascist powers. Hopefully, maybe, the world has learned for all time through this nightmare of might makes right that Fascism is evil.
That its wrong to look out at the world and expect everyone to be like you. That the ideas that percolate in diversity is critically necessary to solutions. That if anyone actually does build a world where everyone comes from the same boring ass cul-de-sac, it would be a nightmare of stagnation and trolling.
The ICE prison gates have been thrown open! Never gain will stacks carry the ashes of the unwanted! The racist scars from colonialism (defined as: the worst period of genocide and cultural extermination in human history) are recognized and honest effort made for truth and reconciliation!
It happens in this alternate universe anyway..
Thanks for playing NUKKXX... gg
Peace and cannabis for everyone!
