This Tutorial is to show a possible tactic to follow in the Barrikady Factory Scenario of Heroes and Leaders mod. The Tutorial is limited to turn 1 of this scenario.
It is convenient to have read the shining description that a forum member, GiveWarAchance, has made about this scenario in the thread:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4566675

All observations contained in the thread "Barrikady Factory Battle in Stalingrad" of After Action Reports are considered known.

Impulse 1:
The Soviets have won the initiative and have conducted mortar fire against the SdKfz 251/9 Stummel successfully. The vehicle has been broken.
We started well !!!!
We started the attack with the Panzergrenadiers of the 24th Panzer Division, specifically with the HS in U2 moving towards S3.

When the HS of U2 enters T2, on its way to S3, it is attacked by the Soviet HS of S4. The German HS is broken and remains vulnerable in S3.
The German impulse ends and the Soviet commander passes.
The AI has acted prudently. Instead of passing on his own Impulse, he could have fired to Kill the HS broken and vulnerable in S3. I could have even sent his HS in R3 for a winner Close Combat on S3, for example.
The Russians remain calm.

Impulse 2:
In the new impulse, the German commandant move the HS from S2 to S3 to reveal all the units in R3 and the squad still hidden in S4.
Another option would be to move all or any of the units located in T1. However, if they decide to move to T2 (which would be an acceptable destination), there is a risk of being attacked in T2 along with the unit already broken in T2.
The HS of S2 reaches S3 and nothing happens! Well, then the squad, which has already achieved its objective of revealing the units of R3 and S4, continues its movement to R2.
It's the turn of the Soviets. Now, the unit that has not yet fired since S4 opens fire on the HS that has just arrived at R2, but without success.
Well, this works.

Impulse 3:
We are facing the first important decision. We know that the orders are to advance against the enemy with the HS to discover their positions and expose them to our attack. Now we have within our reach the group of Soviet units located on S4, since I can not defend myself with defensive fire. The German group that could make this attack will be the one located in S2.
However, the Soviet group at R3 has not yet fired and has already been discovered. Surely if the German assault group now enters S3, they will be attacked by those desperate Russians.
Calm.
The attack can wait.
Verifying the probabilities of success in an attack with the flamethrower of the group in Q2 (without using neither the Leader nor the other units located there), there is a 99% chance.
This is what we are going to do.

Impulse 3 (continued):
Disappointing result. I expected something more from that flamethrower. At least the squad has been broken and it has had to withdraw due to the attack of the flamethrower.
Our impulse has ended.

Impulse 3 (continued):
Kharchenko and the men he has left are now firing at R2's HS and breaking it.
Note that Kharchenko is the only Leader in charge of building P3-Q4-R3-S4 (Storehouse west). If Kharchenko is eliminated or broken, the building would be greatly weakened.
However, it is not yet time to energetically attack the Storehouse building. If we activate the LOS (Line of Sight), by pressing the LOS key in the Action Bar, and select the S3 hex, we can trace the LOS from this hex to any hex we want.
Thanks to this tool, we can verify that the Soviet group of Q4 has a LOS degraded (but not blocked) until S3, that the group in P3 has a LOS blocked until S3, and that the group in N3 has a clear LOS until S3.
The Soviet units can see the Hex S3 above the Storehouse west in P3, because they are in level 2 of the building of N3, of 3 levels of height of obstruction to the LOS.
Recapitulating, there are still units that can fire against the transition Hex to assault the Storehouse west building through S3.

Impulse 4:
We continue advancing with the HS just against those Soviet units that have some visibility on S3. We started with the HS of the German attack group in O2.
Although it may be tempting to move to O3, this move has the problem that there is a Soviet vehicle in O11 that can fire at the HS. Then, the HS moves to N2, where the group of Russian units of N3 fires at it and breaks it.
We have finished our impulse.
The Russians now fire their mortars at the T2 hex where our broken HS was and eliminate it.
Our first loss.

Impulse 5:
Now we move the HS of the German assault group located at P1. First he enters hex P2, where the Soviet group located in P3 shoots him point-blank with his units. But, fortunately, our unit is unharmed.
Therefore, it continues its movement until Q3, causing another attack, now from the Soviet units located in hex Q4. This time our HS has not been so lucky and has been eliminated.
Our second loss.
The Germans want revenge. But we have to be cautious. Activating the LOS again from the Hex S3, we see that there is LOS degraded to the Soviet group located in V6. This group can only reach S3 with its machine gun, since it is at a range of 5 hex. It is preferable to wait. There are better options ....

Impulse 5:
It seems safer that Sergeant Stauffer and the rest of his assault group (that has not yet participated in the current turn) move to R3 to enter Close Combat against Karchenko and his men.
The result of Close Combat has been a failure. Stauffer has lost an HS and Karchenko has left alive. We have the first melee in R3 and we will have to reinforce later to try to win the Close Combat in the next turn.
Fair play:
When Sergeant Stauffer's group moved from his initial hex, the hexes surrounding his starting point have been shaded green. This game takes into account that Stauffer is a Leader, so it is also possible to activate, during this same impulse, any unit that has initiated the impulse adjacent to it (in one of those shaded hexes). This is a very important attribute and rule that gives some advantage to the side that uses it. Recall that normally only one hex worth of units per impulse, so it is easy to see how this ability of the Leader can be very important under fire.
However, I have not seen that the AI has used it when it plays against me. Therefore, I always act with Fair Play with her and I do not use it either. After all, it is not human.

Impulse 6:
Assuming the risk of being attacked from V6, the Germans decide to assault S4 with the group of sergeant Primozic in S2, going through S3.
In S3 the German assault group is not attacked and enters directly into the Close Combat. This time all the Soviet units in S4 are eliminated, but Primozic loses the Schutzen squad.
The Storehouse west building begins to have German color.
We just won the first Victory Hex.
The Germans finish their impulse and the Soviets pass.
If the Soviets decide to pass means that the Germans are not offering them too many options to do something. Good news.

Impulse 7:
Once some penetration has been achieved in the Storehouse West building, now we have to bring the rearguard units closer to strengthen the melee in S3 in the next turn.
The HS of T1 moves to S2 and then to S2. The Soviets do not shoot from V6 and pass.
Impulse 8:
The Schutzen of T1 repeat the same movement as the HS to get to S2 and the Soviets still do not react and pass again.
However, this does not mean that the V6 machine gun does not fire later. At the moment it does not shoot and it reserves the option to do it later. We have to see to it that this never happens.

Impulse 9:
Now is the time to launch another assault group against the increasingly weakened Soviets of the Storehouse West building. Sergeant Pfluger's team launches the assault on the P3 hex.
The Close Combat eliminates all the Russian defenders and the Germans lose the Schutzen squad. We are suffering losses in each Melee but the Russians still lose more units.
We just won the second Victory Hex. 2 vs. 37. Much remains to be done.

Impulse 10:
Now the group of R1 moves towards the front.
First move the Panzergrenadier to Q3. The Soviet commander passes.
Impulse 11:
Then, Colonel Schulz moves to R2 to try to rally the broken HS. The Soviet commander pass again.
Impulse 12:
Finally, the remaining group, consists of an HS and a Schutzen squad, move to P2. Error!!!.
I have not see the HMG Maxim in M6. The Soviets do not doubt and shoot to the German group. The result is a broken squad. It could have been worse, but it has been a mistake.
The Soviet commander passes.
Impulse 13:
The last squad of the 108th Panzer Regiment of 14th Panzergrenadier Division, located in T1, moves to R1, avoiding passing through T2.
The Soviet commander keeps going.

Impulse 14:
Now it's the turn of the boys of the 21st Panzergrenadier of the 14th Panzer Division. Let's remember that our orders are to conquer, in the first place, the adjacent building of the Industrial Training School F.Z.O., and then advance against the Substation of trams.
Again, and following the same strategy, the HS in N1 moves to M1. Once there is attacked by everything group (error !!!) of Soviet units of M1. To the greater misfortune of the Soviets, our squad is unharmed, so it continues to advance to M2, where it is attacked by the squad of M4. Again our squad remains in good order.
We finish our impulse and the Soviets pass.
It has been a good impulse because, suddenly, the units in M1 are defenseless in front of a frontal attack of the German shock forces.

Impulse 15:
Indeed, hex M1 is not within the range of Soviet units in L3 (its range is 2 hexes and they do not have the ability to shoot long distance). Then, the German assault group on N1 moves to M1 and then assaults the Soviet units on L1 by entering Close Combat.
The result of the Close Combat is excellent, being eliminated all the Soviet units, surviving all the German units, and conquering a new Victory Hex (3 vs 36).
We have finished our impulse.
The Soviets react by shooting with all their units in hex K2 against our broken HS in N2.
Our HS bravely resists enemy fire and an Héreo emerges from its rows. His name is Haug and he has a Skill Card Slayer.
The impulse finishes magnificently for the German side.
Impulse 16:
Now, the rearguard units of the attack group of the 108th Panzergrenadiers regiment in O1, move following the assault group of Senior Sergeant Rietscher, from O1 to M1.
The Soviet commander passes.

Impulse 17:
Now we are in another important moment. Major Muller's group in O2 is the last remaining to take part in this impulse within the left flank of the German attack.
One option is to wait a few more impulses for the group of Staff Sergeant Nikolai Panteleyevich Kabak in O2 to decide to shoot our broken HS accompanied by Hero Haug in N2.
The other option is for the Major Muller group to advance directly towards N2, exposing themselves to the more than certain attack of the Soviet group of Staff Sergeant Kabak. This option has the additional problem that the shots of the Kabak Russians would also be directed against the HS and our Hero. Too many targets !!!
The third option is to advance to O3, risking being attacked from N6. So, Major Muller's group moves to O3 and, effectively, is attacked by the Russians of N6. The attack has no effect and the Germans continue to N3, entering there in Close Combat.
The result of the Close Combat ends with all the Soviet units Kill and the Schutzen squad also dead.
Our impulse ends with another Victory Hex won (4 vs 35).
The Russian commander passes.

Impulse 18:
The center of gravity of the German attack moves towards its right flank, with the less powerful units of the 577th Rifles Regiment of the 305th Infantry Division and of the 545th Rifles Regiment of the 389 Infantry Division.
However, the first movement is made by the AFV PzKpfw IV-C 75 * to get closer to the front.
The German impulse ends.
The Soviets of Staff Sergeant Nikolai Panteleyevich Kabak in O2 to decide to shoot our broken HS accompanied by Hero Haug in N2. Our HS is eliminated and the Hero Haug is wounded.
This impulse has not been as good as the previous one.

Impulse 19:
Vehicles of the 21st Panzer Regiment of the 21st Panzer Division continue to move. Now it does it on the SdKfz 251/9 Ausf. D Stummel that is broken since the first Soviet attack.
The SdKfz moves to AB2 and then to AC3 where it can no longer move to AC4 because it has no more movement points left and because it has detected the presence of the Russian AFV T34 M41 76L and can not move towards a known enemy unit when it it's broken.
The German impulse has ended.
Now, the T34 M41 76L fires at the SdKfz and fails. The subsequent attack with the MG shipped in the AFV also fail.
The impulse ends.

Impulse 20:
Now move the PzKpfw IV F1 75 * from AB2 to AA5 following the route AB2-AG3-AG4-AG5-AB5-AA5. The Russians have not intercepted this movement so it is likely that the Soviets no longer have units in the street of the AC column.
Good to Know.
The Germans have finished their momentum and the Russians pass once more.
The rest of the vehicles must move to the left flank to reinforce the main attack of the grenadiers. But the street that connects the right flank with the left flank is beaten in hexes W3 and S3 by the gun located in V5.
Therefore, vehicle movements will have to wait until later.

Impulse 21:
We continue with the tactic of attacking from the right to the left.
The German Infantry Regiments have few HS available, so they will have to start their approaches using the Conscripts Rifles.
The Conscripts in AB7 move to AA8 and receive shots from one of the Y8 squads, but they do not suffer damage. It continues its movement until AA9 where they are again attacked by the sniper in AA10 and, this time, they are eliminated.
The turn ends for the Germans. The Russians pass.

The German HS tries to attack the sniper in Close Combat and eliminate him. For it moves to AA9 and there is attacked by the Soviet squad still available to shoot in Y8 that breaks it, frustrating its attack.
The turn ends for the Germans and the Russian commander decides to pass.

Impulse 23:
The squad remaining on AB7 advances to AA8 and stops there.
The German impulse ends and the Russians pass.
The right flank is not progressing as the left flank has, despite the presence of vehicles.
Impulse 24:
Thus, the Germans change their tactics to try to attract Russian fire.
The HS in Z4 moves to Y5 and the Soviets do not react.
Then, it continues until Y6 and now it is attacked by all (error !!!) Soviet units of X7. Fortunately the HS is still in good order and decides to continue its movement to X6, where it is attacked by all (again error!!!) Soviet units in W7 that finally break it.
The Germans finish their turn.
The Russians pass.
Suddenly, the picture has been clarified and opportunities for Germans arise.

Impulse 25:
It's time to face our last AFV, the PzKpfw III-N 75 *, with the cannon in T5. We will use the Assault Movement to retain the possibility of firing later. That is, if the cannon fires and fails, we can still return the fire.
The Pz III moves to X2 and is attacked by its flank by the cannon in T5, which fails. We continue with the movement until W3 and, as it still has the AFV 1 MP, we use it to turn all the AFV to the left, facing its front part, with more armor, to the cannon. We could shoot now, but we save this option for later.
The Soviets pass.

Impulse 26:
We continue with the approach of units from the rear.
The Second Line squad in Z4 moves to X4, then to X4, and finally to W5, where it is attacked by the Firts Line squad that handles the MMG of the Soviet group in V6.
Our squad is broken and the German impulse ends.
Now, the other squadron in V6 fires (error !!!) against our HS broken in X6, and it fails !!!
This shot was not necessary since the Soviets are left without the ability to make defensive fire on their right flank. Now, only is available the group in T5 and its rearguard units.

It is time to further weaken the close response capacity of the first Soviet defense line.
The HS in J4 moves to J5 revealing the Soviet group in T5, which fires with all its units (very precipitous !!!), and also fails.
Our HS continues its movement until T4, where it is attacked by a squad of the R6 group. The attack fails again and the HS completes its impulse completely unharmed. A miracle!!!.
In their impulse, the Soviets shoot with their rear group in W8 against our HS broken in X6 and fail again.
The Soviet commander is acting very hastily and is running out of capacity to respond.
Obvious signs of despair!

Now we move the HS in V3 to V4, and from there to U5, where it is attacked by the sniper in T6, without success. The German impulse ends.
Little by little, the Soviets of the first defensive line are losing their capacity of defensive fire.
During the Soviet Impulse, the entire group of units in X8 fires at the HS broken in X6, eliminating it.
Although the loss of another unit is bad news, however, this has happened in exchange for the fact that the Soviet front-line forces have lost all their capacity to respond.
From now on, the German commander has his hands free to act.

Impulse 29:
The first thing is to neutralize annoying enemies.
The assault group led by Sergeant Major Kreiser in U4 assaults in Clocse Combat the location of the Russian cannon in V5 with an odds ratio of 5: 1, eliminating it immediately.
The German impulse ends and the Soviets pass.

Impulse 30:
Now, the German assault group led by Lieutenant Lemm in X6 attacks in Close Combat the group of Russian units in W7, moving to X6 and then to W7.
This is a risky action, because the balance of forces is balanced, and only the leadership factor of the lieutenant Lemm can unbalance the balance.
The Close Combat advantage ratio is 1: 1 and the Lieutenant wins it at the cost of losing the Conscripts squad. We have been lucky.
The German impulse ends and the Russians pass once more (5 vs 34).

We have another risky move in front of us.
The objective of the assault group led by Colonel Scupin in AA6 is to attack in Close Combat the strong Soviet group that protects the entrance to the factory in X7. Although the Germans are numerous and strong, the Soviets are also strong. Well, if we want to win we have to be bold.
Colonel Scupin's assault group moves toward its target through route AA6-Z5-Y6-X6-X7.
The advantage ratio is 2:1 and Colonel Scupin wins the Close Combat without suffering any loss.
The building of the factory begins to have German color (6 vs 33).
The German impulse ends and the Russians pass.

The German AFV in W3 tries to complete the success and shoots against the Soviet group in V6 but fails. The subsequent attack with their on board MGs also fails.
The German impulse ends and the Soviets pass.
Impulse 33:
Now, the German assault group led by Corporal Hetzenauer in Y4 moves to the rearguard of the units that have already entered the factory, following the route Y4-Y5-Y6-X6.
The German impulse ends and the Russians pass once more.

Impulse 40:
It would still be necessary to move the SdKfz 10/4 20L located in Z2, but the German commander decides to wait to know the reaction of the Soviet commander.
When one side has already used all its units during a turn, the AI will perform an automatic pass, and that is the best way to tell the Soviet commander that he can move or shoot with impunity because we will not be able to do anything.
If we reserve to some units (in this case only one, although the AI does not know, or should not know) to "pretend" that we still have some "ace" hidden in our sleeve, the AI may act prudently.
The German commander passes (Pass-2) and the Soviet commander agrees to end the turn now.

Well, it was not a bad initial turn.
We have lost some units, especially HS and Conscripts squads, but the Russians have also suffered losses. An important fact is that the Germans have not lost any Leader and the Russians have lost three Leaders.
The Soviet front has been broken at several points and now the Germans can take advantage of the penetration points to break the Soviet defense.
We are still far from winning (6 vs 33), but we see a light at the end of the tunnel ..........
