As far as I know, the video card loads textures as 1024*1024, 2048*2048, 4096*4096, 8192*8192 etc. sizes. You go one pixel beyond that and the bigger size is used. So, for example 6000px and 8000px are loaded as 8192*8192.
My AB map-editing mode preview (pressing T) shows 6144px preview, but in much poorer quality than what I see from image viewer. I guess this is because AB map editor mode load the 6144px map as 8192px map, and this might cause the blurring of the boundaries.
However after the patch, both 8000px and 8192px previews do not works for me anymore. They are showing proper image from map selection screen. But they are showing only black during preview inside map editing mode.
Too sad, before the patch, I was working nicely with 8000px preview inside AB map editor, which showed better edges and minor dirt road networks from preview mode. It had some blurs of course but they were tolerable, and this made me possible to work only using satellite map inside AB map editor. But now, with 6144px, I can't recognize things from preview satellite map
I better looking for other way...
