when I make a freight airdrop on an airbase sometimes you can see from the pop up menu the amount of freight is shown and for each air drop you can see more freight being shown. Other times you can drop freight and the pop up hex shows no freight being added

If you airdrop on a hex with and an air base and a unit does the unit get the freight or does it go to the airbase and generally available

if there is a unit, it will take on the dropped freight. So its a great way to fuel up a single formation - useful say in Torch to bring a single allied armoured brigade up to near full mobility. If you have a HQ, the HQ will send it out to its command chain. If the airbase is empty, a temp depot will be created and all the freight distributed as normal (so you have limited control over which units actually get it but you can resupply a number of formations to some extent).

If you can choose it's always better to airdrop directly over an airport.
The planes land in the AF and almost all the freight will be rescued by the units in the Airfield hex and around it (I noticed units refilled at 2 hexes from the AF).
If you airdrop over an unit outside an AF only a small fraction of the freight will be rescued; in this case the game modelizes that a great part of airdrop is dispersed in the launch.
I use this second method only when I'm forced to.
