I have used CMANO extensively to game out certain situations and scenarios for a blog I write about a hypothetical World War III that takes place in 1987. Command has been a wonderful tool for gaming out hypothetical battles and seeing how certain weapons systems could work...or not work....in hypothetical situations.

Now, I've decided to post a few of my favorite scenarios. This is the first one. It's based on defending Danish air space, airbases, and air defense network from a wave of Soviet and Warsaw Pact airstrikes on the second day of hostilities. The first day of the war was relatively quiet in Denmark owing to the setbacks suffered by Soviet air and land forces in Germany. 10 July, the second day, will not be so forgiving.

Feedback is desired. Hope you enjoy the scenario.

Wow. The website with all the (background) stories looks very promising.

Will you posting your CMANO scenarios in chronological or random order?

Thanks! I'm not sure which way I'll go yet. After I see how this scenario goes, I'll decide. Probably either chronological or by theater.

You're welcome, Dude. FYI, I've downloaded your scenario and will play it out over the weekend.

Going to give this a go this morning. Nice setup, great web page.

Couple points off the start:

-I understand you want to keep this as air only, but without SAM defences in Poland and DDR there is nothing stopping the player from parking his fighters over the Red bases and hitting them as they come up. It might be useful to put a No Nav Zone covering that area to prevent that.

-You might put all the fighters on QTR at start (Quick Turn Around), since its an A2A fight there is no reason not to. This takes a minor burden off the player, which a newbie may miss.

-I see no reason for the Drakens with the Recon loadout. Intentional? There are no recon or A2G taskings, in a 6 hr scenario the player won't have time to re arm for A2G anyway. I rearmed them to A2A.

-Having unlimited munitions as a pre-set may have unintended consiquences. Distances are so short, the Germany base is as close as all the Jutland bases to the targets in Zeeland so I'm tempted to re-base a bunch of my F-16s after their first mission. Might be a bad move but...

OK, going in

OK

The test turned into an AAR: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4513410&mpage=1&key=

Very good fun.

A couple more points:

-Checking the missions I think they may be set up using local time, which in this case is one hour off from Zulu. Missions are triggered (activated/inactivated/event triggers etc) on Zulu time. Intentional? Makes the first 90 min of the game very quiet and that’s about 20% of the scenario time.

-A no nav area would protect your ELINT/Jammer AC as well

-The final mission did not launch, possibly because the escorts were out of range, not sure (Skrde AB)

This was good fun.

Thanks

Gunnar,

90 minutes is too long, true. I'm starting to see that more clearly. Original intent was to give the player time to set up his missions and figure out strategy. I can reduce that to 30 and maybe squeeze out enough time for another wave of attacks

Excellent point about the jammer and I'll use the suggestion in the next go around.

Not sure what could've stopped that mission from going. I'll take a look and see if I can figure it out. Probably was out of range as you said.

You're kidding, it only works for COW? Ok, I think I can fix that.

You will need two versions of the scenario; a Chains of War, and a non-CoW.

Please keep a CoW version, it really added to the fun,

B

Morning Everyone! I just replaced the original Denmark scenario with a revised version. It's available for download above in the thread's first post. The changes weren't major, mostly little upgrades and corrections some of you caught and were kind enough to inform me of. I will make one more update before finally posting this scenario sometime later in the month. The changes in the new version are:

-Exclusion zone established over southern Sweden. Sweden is neutral so far in the alternate '87 timeline.

-Game Time has been reduced to 3.5 hours. 5+ hours was unnecessarily long.

-Bare bones scoring system implemented. This needs to be revised further and will be. As I said previously, this scenario was created to game out a hypothetical situation and scoring wasn't even a thought.

-Two Red missions that were not firing properly have been fixed.

WW31987Blog,

An enjoyable wee scenario mate, I was

14x Su-22M-4K Fitter K
12x Su-24M Fencer D
15x MiG-27 Flogger D
4x MiG-21MF Fishbed J
2x MiG-23ML Flogger G
13x Su-24 Fencer C
3x Su-27S Flanker B
1x Tu-16K-26PM Badger G Mod

For

2x Radar (AN/FPS-110)
10x F-16A Falcon
8x F-35XD Draken

I enjoyed the scenario, and echo the above points, I was wondering do the Danes have no terminal AD for HV Airfields? It might be a shade too early for Stinger but perhaps some Redeyes? Additionally would it be beyond the realm of possibilties to factor in Danish/FRG warships into the scenario, that would create an additional problem for attackers.

Would you consider flipping this scenario to play from the red side?

Regards

Butch
Your Scottish Friend

Good points, Butch. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad to toss in some Redeyes or Stingers. Just a handful. Same for warships. Maybe a West German frigate here, or a Danish FAC there to liven things up a bit. :)

Flipping the scenario and playing it from the Red side, eh? I like the idea but the player will probably wind up with a whole bunch of combat losses for little gain. If you have any ideas on how to level the playing field, let me know. :)

Regards from the other side of the pond!
