Sorry to say guys but I think the Diesel-Electric Boat recharging bug is still going on with B998.9 . In the ZIP is a Scenario I am working on and a Test run that I did with the God's Eye View to watch the DPRK Romeo. Reason I did this was I could never find the boat in any playtest and thought that was quite unusual. Note the DPRK Doctrine is set to recharge at 60% but she still stays at depth and never recharges until the batteries run out. Perhaps I have something set wrong but I think it's right...

Here is the Romeo's Doctrine from the unit display, so not the side doctrine (but as there is only one DPRK unit they are identical). I even set the dive on contact to "no" to keep her from not going deep. She just never comes up for air (or recharge!).

And her she is "dead in the water" at -131 feet. Note version 998.9.

OK, think I figured it out, but does pose another question! I started designing the scenario in B998.8 but upgraded to B998.9 during the process. I deleted the Romeo and re-entered the unit under B998.9 and now she is recharging. I did TRY to rebuild the scenario but that did not seem to work. Is this change backward compatible to all the scenarios with Diesel Boats? Did I do something wrong in trying to rebuild it?

Actually had to delete and reenter ALL of the Diesel boats from all sides to get them to behave correctly.

BUT here is a new behavior I'm noting. The boat runs her batteries way down (but now set to recharge at 60% for Transit and 40% for Attack) and is at "all stop" and recharging. Sorry never been on a Diesel-Electric Boat not thinking they would maintain some steerage! Russian Kilo is maintaining speed but is WAY low on battery and recharging and she is set to 50%/50% for both. Something is still wrong here...

Playing some more I think there is an issue with "Sprint and Drift" when recharging. I switched to the DPRK and took the Romeo off "Sprint and Drift" and now she's moving again. But she seemed to refuse to resume movement after batteries were recharged. Sorry for all the posts but I'm trying to play through this. I really think there is an issue here...

I think the 'manual' setting is overriding the 'auto' logic for the recharging. Clicked it off and it came up to recharge.
Same thing for the speed.
Q:
If the AI is supposed to be controlling the unit, what is the logic behind using manual mode to force it to use those settings?

Yes but can't figure out why that is happening? I actually went and replaced all of the Diesel-Electric Boats this morning, didn't touch the Throttle controls or plot a course for them. I just teleported them and had them assigned to a mission with no adjustments to speed or depth and yet they are coming up under "Manual" for all three boats in this morning's test run. Further I tried resetting the time to 5 minutes before teleport time in the scenario editor so I could just go in there once and check off the manual boxes and the show as "Auto" in the scenario editor but switch to "Manual" during play. I am not setting them to manual, they are doing it themselves.

I can see you have given the unit a specific set of depths to maintain in the Mission (Romeo Sea Control). That would be why it is switching to manual and ignoring any AI logic.

Behavior seems to be working under latest release, but have added some logic to force a AI controlled sub to recharge if it can, when it gets into a similar state. This could be one of those 'edge' cases.

First of all, please let me say, that I absolutely LOVE this game! Command: Modern Air Naval Operations is a testament to hard work, dedication, and has set the warfare simulation bar so high, I doubt anyone will come close in a long time. From the bottom of my computer-sailor's heart, THANK YOU for what you do!!! This is my favorite computer game of all time!

I know you guys are ridiculously busy and constantly improving the software and making progress and I want you all to know the results are incredible! I also appreciate the fact that the developers are so receptive to the gaming community.

I would like to point out one minor issue that has seemed to persist. Its the ol' diesel boats charging problem again. More specifically, not charging. I've got build 998.8, and it seems like it happens in both DB3000 and CWDB, and pretty much across the board with the subs.

Settings are:
Avoid Contact-No
Dive when threat-Yes when ships are within 20nm
Recharge Batt Transit- 30%
Recharge Batt Offensive- 10%
AIP-Yes when engaged offensive

They will either run themselves till the batteries are dry, and won't come up to recharge at all, sitting dead in the water, or they will proceed at periscope depth burning battery until its gone. When the boats conk out like this, they will not even blow ballast tanks to come to the surface or anything, they just sit there at whatever depth they were cruising along at.

I don't know if its important or not, but I have noticed that if I manually adjust the "altitude" (depth) of the boat to a shallower depth than the periscope depth button, and providing the batteries aren't already dead, eventually I can seem to get it to a point where it is happy and starts up diesels and charging. However, at this point, some other oddities sometimes present themselves. The boat will start charging (sometimes) but it wont move. If I can get it going by manually setting a speed, sometimes it will take off and start sailing at a depth of about 55 feet or so, and it will seem to work as its supposed to: turning diesel juice into battery juice.

I hate to even come on here and complain, but if any info I can provide might make the simulation better and get more folks to buy this fantastic wonder of computer simulation, then I'm happy to do it.

Again, thank you all at Matrix for CMANO.

Sincerely,

Very Happy Customer! :)

there are 2 updates since 998.8 - and specifically the one released this week says:

* Fixed: #12451 - Sub under AI control not recharging battery

might that fix your issue?

Had another look at this. The fix that we applied here caused a much more serious issue elsewhere: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4532318

Digging into the scenario, the problem appears to be that, although the Romeo patrol has set depths for transit and on-station, the sub is also given a manual depth order (40m) which overrides these settings.

If the manual depth is removed, the sub correctly rises to periscope depth, remains there to fully charge its battery, and then dives again to continue its patrol at the mission-specified depth.

So this looks like a scenario author error. Given that this is an AI control side, the sub should not be given a manual depth override.
