Hey folks, I picked up TOAW4 recently, having only played it a little ~20 years ago. I love it! Had great time w NorthAfrica campaign & 2 Weeks in Normandy.

Now having trouble finding next scenario (me vs PO). I have been trying the various Normandy campaigns but no success -- they tend to require way too much micro (I don't want to deal with dozens of ships, moving each from england one at a time). In others, the german response on day 1 is wrong -- huge armored response that throws my men off the beach (France 1944 scenario). the germans did not have all these huge, powerful units engaged on day 1.

Anyone thoughts on best battle for France scenarios?

Or maybe I should just move over the to the east, where it seems there's lots of good ones?

ooops, just saw another thread about Bocage Hell, it might be just what I was looking for! Thanks to the author of that fine-looking campaign!

If you would like to try something a bit different, may I suggest Tim McBride's Operation Roundup. With Tim's permission, I did a rework of it for IV, "Operation Roundup 1943 Clash of Steel". It can be interesting vs the PO. I discovered that "Elmer" was becoming a formidable foe and didn't care about the house rules. The the new naval aspects do make it hard on the Allies. But once ashore it is a toss up if they hang on or break out. Might want to help the PO a bit. Elmer will do suicide attacks until everyone dies trying to get ashore against some formidable shore guns. There is just a small window of time before they all wake up. Often elmer can do it. With Elmer, I have learned to expect the unexpected. I did the rework with the intent of the German player vs Allied PO as best I could. Still the German PO can very a challenge too. Cheers.

I now see what I did wrong, in general -- I didn't exploit depth of beachhead to give myself room. but to do that I need to do better management of time & resources. Great! I really want to get into the bocage battles and beyond, and when day 1 went wrong in Brit sector I was lost.

And thanks to you Custer7, I will check out the roundup scenario.

I remember trying to learn how to play with TOAW III on Operation Overloard 44
. It was the first scenario I played all the way to the end. I played as the Allies
and I remember a hard fight. This was all back in 2005 or so. I remember that I really
liked the "tactical" feel of the scenario. I reccommend it too.

Hey all, thanks for the input. I have gone back to both these Normandy campaigns, using the first few days to train myself. Holy Moly I am flat out terrible at this game! I wasn't using the combat planner well at all. Only now do I realize it predicts the number of combat cycles as the combat is planned.

It does seem that the artillery/navy guns in these are rather dialed back, I am lucky to get a few % enemy casualties even with very intense bombardments -- and that's against non-dug in units. (specifically, the strong, attacking German units facing brits in the east by the Orne)

and while I am here, do y'all tend to do more counter-battery fire against enemy arty or more on the front line schmucks?

I check the planned combats button before conducting combat. If there are any really long combats, then I cancel them and come back to them the next round. I have been routinely getting 3-4 combat rounds. It takes a while to figure this out.

I am a gunner, well a retired gunner, but I almost never conduct counter battery fire. I probably should, but I have not been doing it. I have been using my guns to support attacks.

By the way, I found trying out some of the smaller scenarios helped me figure out the combat planning thing. I really liked the Operation Crusader scenario. As the commonwealth commander you have a bunch of divisions and lots of room to manoeuvre. This means you need to plan your movement and your attacks.
