I read a recent post on Liberty or Death and it got me thinking about a game I played all the time called Panzers East. I looked at this website and it has thumbnail pictures of the old games. Wow, look at those top notch graphics!

https://www.myabandonware.com/browse/publisher/the-avalon-hill-game-company-1wy/page/4/

By the way, what emulator is easiest to use? I might want to try a game, wow, so many emulators, I just want to try some of the old war games.

I used to play this one as well, good SIM on middle east

Greetings demyansk,
Thanks for posting as it brings back memories of those old Avalon Hill games.
I played their Under Fire on my C-64. Reminded me of Classic Squad Leader board game and Up Front card game.

Hey Rommel,

I had that game as well. I really liked those old games more than all the new stuff. I was just fascinated that I could play a war game against a computer anytime I wanted to. I must have put hours with SSG War in the East game. I sold the Commodore and some of the games for 100 bucks. I still have the SSG of MacArthur war, Rommel and a few others. Fun stuff.

Greetings demyansk and Auchinleck,
I subscribed to RUN 5 by SSG and played every C-64 title they put out. I loved War in the East and the original Battlefront. The Civil War battles were also excellent.
I also have used the Lemon C-64 package at times for a retro blast.
I fondly remember the Cinemaware title Rocket Ranger and trying to save the world from nazis invading America.
The SSI offerings were also great.

Yes, fun stuff, I still have a bunch of run 5 magazines, I think, wow I better check. I know I have a bunch of the wargamer magazines I think by Novalogic? I'll have to check that as well. I used to like creating the scenarios from run5 and then playing them.

I've been playing all these fancy new war and strategy games and recently went back to SSG's Battles in Italy. I was amazed at how good the AI is in that game. Much better than some we play today. Have we made so little progress in 13 years?

I will play Kharkov next. Only problem is the editor is tough to work with.

Isnīt Achtung Spitfire a game by "Clash of Arms Games"? A J.D Websters Fighting Wings Series.

Iam recently getting into some GDW (Game Design Warkshop) games. I bought "Sands of War" and the two first Assault Series modules, "Tactical Combat Europe 1985" and "Boots & Saddles", all three by Frank Chadwick. I find myself buying/discovering alot of old games lately and really having fun!

Hereīs my latest unboxings

Yes, the computer version was based on that series (as was Over The Reich (OTR)). Both (alongside Flight Commander 2 (FC2)) were made by the same guy who brought you Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (and its subsequent descendants), back when Battlefront.com was known as Big Time Software.

Note that most people have problems running Achtung Spitfire due to the copy protection not being able to read from a CD and/or DVD player under later operating systems.

Oh I see, itīs the PC version. I have both from Old-Games.com (no CD needed). Something similar would be "The Few" (Steam).

Yes so Iam aware that some old Battlefront soft had this issue with copy protection on newer gear.

Thanks E.

Yep, they're based on it, but LOOSELY and SIMPLY. I did not know they were distributing cracked versions now.

I like the mechanics of Flight Commander 2, far more than AS or OTR. Even though the subject matter of AS & OTR is where my interests lay. (I also have the the whole Fighting Wings boardgame series)

As can be inferred from above, I think the copy protection problems with Big Time Software, stem from Avalon Hill.

I was looking at the files I have saved on my HD from when I paid for a month of access to Old-Games. Not that I saved alot of them because I came to the same conclusion, craked versions among some abandone-ware. Actually I only Installed "Start Trek Fleet Command Orion Pirates", yeah the name is a coincidence Then I just tried the rest of interest, OTR worked as a DOS-Box Emu so there was no need to install that, but none of them stayed on my HD anyway. I have/or had a working DOS-Box of FC2 on my HD somewhere..

Hopefully something "new" will hit our PCīs with this gender soon

Meanwhile I try to play GGīs Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich, but even with the recent mod itīs very slow, it reminds me of when I used to use a typewriter

Have you tried the "WarBirds" series modules? Tabletop but probably the best air combat simulation for a boardgame out there today (Tim Simo is in the group with us too). Steve is working on a new module, and just recently put up the new WB-WWII v1.1 Beta rules which fix some minor issues with the original rules. Itīs Print and Play, but even just to see the mechanics of the game itīs worth it. If you do decide to print, it will cost you as if you bought a new boxed game (thereīs alot in there) be advised!

Don't get me wrong... I love cracked versions. Still angers me that pirates get more convenient versions of games I paid for. (I LOVE the Matrix style the most... I buy from Matrix AND I get the convenience of not having to insert a CD, or not having to connect to the internet, or depending on the future existence of Matrix! ...AND I don't have to search for years to find cracks for my games)

Star Fleet Command (SFC)... I spent a lot of time, effort and money on Star Fleet Battles (SFB) in the late 70s and early 80s. So I had to collect all of Fleetdock 13 for SFC... SFC1, SFC2,and SFCOP look like SFB here.

It's top down and very board-like. Love the background sounds... scale and distance calculations are easy to see on the square grid maps.

I bought that and went back to my originals... which work better here. Actually they work great, EXCEPT that it is hard to control the warp speed map scrolling.

Not familiar with any "warbirds" other than the old Compuserve(?) game.

Ohhh, your missing some fun here....

I think your gonna love it!
Warbirds GS:
http://www.warbirdsgs.com/Home.html

So far Steve has put out WW-I (Canvas Falcons) and WW-II (Blitzkrieg) modules, I think he is working on the Forgoten Wars module now. I only have the Blitzkrieg module. You also get a Vassal module with it. Comms with the group are done via Yahoo, files via Dropbox/Onedrive. Itīs a one-man-team (donīt we seem to love that ).

I didnt print it out at home, I brought the files to my local printing shop on a CD, because thereīs quite alot of charts/manuals in the WBGS.

I kind of forgot it because Iam not playing it anymore, but here are some great mods (active community) for SFC2-3...

http://www.dynaverse.net/forum/index.php

This is the mod I used for SFCOP:
https://hotandspicyforums.com/starfleet-command-orion-pirates-2500-2563-hd-patch-t18934.html

Works just fine with W10x64.

This is for SFCOP...

In your original install, you need to mod the sfc.ini file as follows:
- Change the "Asyn=1" to Async=0

Once you install the above mod, go back to your sfc.ini file and mod as follows:

(3D)Lowres=? in other words, add the nš that maches your resolution...

0 = 800 x 600
1 = 640 x 480
2 = 1280 x 800
3 = 1366 x 768
4 = 1440 x 900
5 = 1600 x 900
6 = 1920 x 1080

Lastley change your "StarFleetOP.exe by choosing "right-click .exe Icon" and switch to 16 bit colors compatibility.

Result:

Have fun!

ah so if i add teh Orion Pirates expansion to SFC 2 then that may help to get it working properly on windos 1064bit which is what i have? I will have to look for a copy of Orion Pirates.

My other thought will be to just have a Virtual pc setup with XP running on it and play it through that (which is what i may need to do for SSI's Fighting Steel too)

thanks for that info - i just got Orion Pirates and tried it out yesterday without the mod and it seemed to be working better than SFC2, i have added the mod now and your instructions so hopefully that fixes the problem i was getting with the UI in the game being too small for the screen and stuck in the top left corner.

I incidentally as i like to be a purist on some old games, found a 20 boxed copy of Orion Pirates too so i will have a legit copy at hand also for my collecion

okay well it seems the mod is not ideal - i installed it like you said and now Orion Pirates is just a black screen - it briefly says loading but then it just goes black and nothing happens

Hmm, strange it worked for me. Or maybe I missed something, do check the HD mod thread just in case. Did you tweak the sc2.ini file as I wrote?

Some of the games in Old-Games are not workable on W10 right of the bat (unless it says so), so you do need to find solutions on your own. I think SFC2 was one of them. GOG has the first SFC Gold but that too seems to have some issues with W10, and/or it just plain looks awful in the graphics dept.!

This is how your root file should look...

EXE Icon...

SCFOP .ini file tweaks...

Works just fine for me...

Man, you fellows are old! I haven't seen references to this kind of stuff for a long time, er, I mean, I haven't read about this in any history books recently. Not that I would know anything about it all first hand. I mean, I am far too young for that of course.

Cool picture of the Doomsday Machine, or whatever that might have been called. If I'm right, it's just a lucky guess. I remember perfecting my tactics to destroy that thing in the original SFB board game.

What I mean to say is that I read how it could be done somewhere, and no I don't remember where.

Just sayin'....

Man, you fellows are old! I haven't seen references to this kind of stuff for a long time, er, I mean, I haven't read about this in any history books recently. Not that I would know anything about it all first hand. I mean, I am far too young for that of course.

The one killer of the SFC series (1-OP, SFC 3 is a completely different and dumbed down beyond recognition gamette), is that they are not turn-based.

Cool picture of the Doomsday Machine, or whatever that might have been called. If I'm right, it's just a lucky guess. I remember perfecting my tactics to destroy that thing in the original SFB board game.

Star Fleet Battles... rings a bell. I'm envisioning a CL, a CA, and a DD... (SFCOP)
