In one of my PBEM games, where I'm playing the Allies, I had a rather nasty surprise when I opened my opponent's most recent turn to find them sneaking Italian capital ships through the Gibraltar straight. Until then, I was under the (mistaken) delusion that only Axis subs could transit the strait, unless Gibraltar was Axis.
Short of basing a large number of RN ships permanently in and around Gibraltar (which in my game hasn't been possible, as am defending against a Sea Lion invasion in-progress), to try to attack the ships as they transit, is there anything else that can be done to prevent the Axis from transiting the straight, such as occupying the the transit hexes at either or both ends?
What do people usually do to discourage the Italians from sneaking into the Atlantic?
