Just listened to a podcast with the author while doing my turn...

Lots of individual stories and flavor focusing on SBD divebombers...interesting on how they were used to fly CAP.

Podcast:

Note this is the fourth part. Each part is roughly 20 minutes I recall.

Hi Lowpe, What podcast and what other podcasts do you listen too? Doesn't have to be history. Always interested in what others are listening too.

He does lots of book reviews over the weekend...my mistake this one is 4 20 minute long podcasts. Perfect to listen to while doing a turn.

He has done a ton of WW2 books.

His specialty is long interview foreign affairs, a little space and books, books and books. History books. Lots of Civil War, WW2 and more. All with the authors.

Highly recommend.

You can shoot down kamikazes with SBDs, pretty worthwhile usage. There were also incidents where SBDs did escort duty against fighters.

I heard an interview, on U tube, of a Lexington's Dauntless veteran, recalling that at the time of the first Japanese strike during the Coral Sea battle, he was flying, together with his wingmen, SBDs on CAP duty...he, first, engaged the assailants, I assume.

SBDs were used in LOW CAP sometimes, especially at the beginning of war - They did hold some advantages over Torpedo loaded Kates ... I do think the Dauntless even has a positive A2A ratio as aircraft!
