Is there supposed to be a message sent to confirm the outcome of Catapult? I have no such message to tell me what happened - although I did get a message to say the French were going to attack Gibraltar - again to what effect I don' know?

Hi warspite1

The outcome is the attack on Mers-el-Kebir, some movement in the Vichy states towards the Axis, and the French bombing Gibraltar which reduces the latter's port strength slightly.

By launching the operation you are preventing the Germans from having the potential to gain more ships.

It's covered in a bit more depth in the Strategy Guide and also in the Notes for the Decision.

DE 118 – UK: launch operation catapult against the Vichy fleet?
Event fires: If the UK supported the formation of the Free French.
Cost of accepting: 35 MPPs.
Yes: The French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir will be attacked, and Vichy France and Vichy Algeria will move between 35-50% towards the Axis.
French bombers based in Algeria will retaliate by bombing Gibraltar.
No: If Vichy Algeria joins the Axis, or is conquered by the Axis, then Germany will receive a strength 5 Battleship at Casablanca, and a full strength Battleship at Algiers.

Bill

I was just catching up with your AAR thread, which I'm thoroughly enjoying, and saw your comment about variability in the result of Operation Catapult.

This might be a bit hard to increase as the only definite outcome is preventing some French ships from definitely ending up in German hands.

The response of the Vichy authorities is variable, and I'm not sure what else can be done as if the overall result isn't guaranteed then players might always say no to it, which ideally I'd rather avoid if we can.

But if you have any ideas please don't hesitate to post them here.
